I were Nvidia user last 4 years and I switched few weeks ago back to AMD (ATI) and my 3D problems were gone. The only reason why I bought Nvidia card 4 year ago was that I could not get in time ATI card when I was moving and I know I could not have time to buy a card for next month. And now I feel stupid that in last 4 years I could have just buy a ATI but I always tought "the card itself is not broken, just the drivers so maybe next version fix problems". If I just would have spended 100€ to ATI card on that time, I would have suffered countless problems (crashes, video problems and other from drivers) less and saved money and time.
I am waiting a very easy way to do pixel accurate cropping and zooming. Simply just dragging with mouse a area to video and zoom in to see pixels (150% zoom?). Now I have not found any other way than play around the numbers and see a overlay on video to move by them.
What I think Kdenlive needs is something like Crop and rectangle selection tool in GIMP (Or photoshop if you really hate GIMP name!).
What is already easy on Kdenlive is use of the timeline and applying most effects. But to get even more users, video editing should be very easy for desktop recorders who does blog posts and other fancy things. And there you need zoom/crop feature to be a very easy.
And I can take almost any Linux distribution and Canonical does not offer anything what would make Ubuntu better than them. Actually, it is much better to stay away from Canonical as then user is more free to actually switch distributions or do easy upgrades and change devices and maintain somekind link to open source community.
If you want to offer a software system for a avarage computer user, forget Ubuntu, forget whole Canonical. Sit down for few hours with the person and listen what that person wants and notice what she/he really need. And then take good Linux distribution what does not play around with configs every 6-24 months. Like Debian or Arch Linux as example. After one hour tweaking, you never need to come back for technical problems if upstream does not really do such.
Yes it is. As well are every applications in your phone what can access anyway to APN information. Usually advertised apps. They can store any data to files. The whole gps/gsm/nmt are problem
I dont want to even read weather from twitter size message, I just want to see simple graphic what tells faster and easier way the weather.
Twitter is no good for anything else than sharing a shorted URL's and those goes much easier even with emails what does not force to have anykind twitter account by anyone.
Monopoly is situation where there is only one company selling products or services at that area. The corporation (or store, what ever you want) can have monopoly in the town, in the district or state or even whole country or world.
Microsoft had monopoly in PC's what had Intel CPU in them. Microsoft did not have monopoly on PC's what had AMD (or any other) CPU. Neither Microsoft did not have monopoly on personal computer markets (personal computer is not PC, as PC was IBM's own personal computer product and brand what it lost to anyone else) as there were multiple different personal computers available than just PC's, like Macintoshes and so on.
Apple does not have monopoly for music store. It can have exclusive rights to some artists and albums... but it does not make it monopoly.
Monopoly is situation where there is only one and no competition (Like Microsoft did not have competition anymore after it got Netscape off from browsers and no one could sell PC's with other OS than Microsoft DOS or NT).
There is other definition to situation what Apple can have. It is "Dominant market position" what means, the market has multiple competitors, but one is so big that it has dominant control over prices and sales what even competitors does.
Apple might have abused its dominant market position, but exclusive rights does not make it if others want to offer such deal to Apple for iTUnes. IF Apple denies artists who sells music trough iTunes to sell it trough other companies, then Apple might abuse its dominant market position in US.
Is it possible to build a own network in public places with Ad-Hoc what would start living like a Internet until all cells have turned connection off?
What is my idea, is that someone sets WLAN connection ON and others can connect to it and start sharing the connection from own point. When there is enough users, you end up to situation where you have own dynamic network where every point is just growing the Ad-Hoc network. And every user could set up a own service (hub like on Diaspora) where to attach information. The basic idea is that there would be a global CHAT channel for everyone (using IRC) where everyone could be.
And when the government, ISP or the nature turns off the Internet, citizens can build own wireless network and share information, discuss and offer even own basic services.
The services could not be any typical HTTP/FTP servers but very simple small ones. Size of the twitter. Send just photos, videos and share map (OpenStreetMap). So no ZIP files, no EXE files, no documents and other. (yes, you could write a virus for JPG, MPEG and many other data files). It would be a massive network on areas where are lots of people. Almost every smartphone sold now has a WLAN connection possibilities. It is true mobile a network coverage extender. Laptops and desktop computers acting more like a permanent nodes.
As it just sounds so stupid that even today, we can not easily build up a own network to share data on smaller areas (like 1x1km area where is 7-10 house and WLAN can connect every house) without going trough internet or other permanent connection. Think about where small town could build own network without routing trough Internet or placing permanent WLAN networking. How about schools where kids could make own network and pass the whole school network to share data?
As far I know currently it is impossible to connect and share (bounce) a WLAN connection on cellphones and even setups what could be technically possible, are just too hard to do for normal users. As it should be just to be so easy, user scans networks and see the number of nodes on it and connects to wanted and can already find data.
I don't think it was a joke, as I can find similar problems from current system and hazardous of competition. If I just would have modpoints (and account) I would mod that up as he (or she) is right.
It is not crippled. NT operating system is not better than Linux, actually vice versa. But the real answer is that for normal people the operating system used (NT, Linux, HURD, FreeBSD, Minix, SunOS....) in software system does not matter anyway other than your used hardware is supported and needed software (not specific software brand but just if you need email client, you get a email client for it) is ported to the OS. Today most application programs use so many different system libraries and software platforms that those are the real game changers. Like Qt, Java, HTML5,.NET and so on.
People have not never used OS's directly, always used them as only to run other software (were it a shell, GUI, office suite or ssh... OS is like a engine in the car. No one use it directly but they use pedals and wheel, sit on seat and listen music trough radio. The engine is just most important machinery/part of the car, even that today at some cars you are not permitted to open the hood to change oil.
Linux is everywhere, even that most Anti-Linux persons does not know that they use it daily on their favorite devices or devices what they need to get their favorite devices working. Without Linux the Internet as we know it, would not exist.
Duh... they are not on own incompatible formats... They are all plain text files! Do you know commandline tools? Did you know that you can actually very easily grep data, change it and push to any other wanted location in any other wanted format you just wish? So much more different possibilities and features than what the register allows.
Register is not same thing as punch of config files in plain text format. Register is a single file what has multiple different application configs, it can be a binary or XML but still it is a register and flawed one (all eggs in one basket)
You suggest the trash would work like trash on KDE SC? It starts deleting oldest first when the limit (%) is meeted from disk size (default 10%). That is not enabled by default. By default the trash informs the user and allows max size to be 10% of the home. User can itself configure trash to delete automatically files older than X days (were trash full or not) or when trash is full, start deleting oldest or biggest.
I must say that I made 2 years ago the change that I did not anymore keep trash on panels or desktop as it was just wasting space and really gave me and other users wrong habits as OP writes. Most dangerous habit what I got long time ago was Shift+Delete to remove files without placing them to trash. Good thing is that I managed to get away from that habit and now I dont even care if the file is in trash as I have enough space. When I run out of space, I first check trash.
When you can proof that software is not affected by politics and used as business strategies, then you can say that technical people should shut the fuck up!
It is all about money. Who gets most of it, spending less than other competitors. And it is all tied up with politics and marketing.
What is ethically correct, it is wrong/incorrect by the business and politics strategies and wise versa.
If everyone would follow good ethics, there would not be any job layoffs, hunger, wars, unemployment, crime and so on. But as there is small group of people who are greed and dont care anything about others, and big group of people (30-40%) who does not care about others, everyone are suffering.
If you really believe what you just said, then you must think that there is nothing wrong that Microsoft would have got the monopoly on the whole personal computer markets, and not just on PC markets.
Windows to every every desk and home... (said by Bill Gates and stealing that slogan from IBM's PC marketing materials "PC on every desktop and home")
I dont like at all when web pages adds own panels top/bottom of the page with javascript so they stay always at bottom/top everything else. Especially when trying to browse web with a netbook. Even with browser set as fullscreen, the panels (sometimes just one, sometimes two) takes too much space from the web page itself.
And all RSS, Facebook, Twitter and other buttons to "share the page" are just so stupid. Taking space from the actual and relevant information.
If Pop-ups and then Ads were not enough, now we need to suffer this stupid "socialize this" or "share this to your friends" thing. Maybe some social network users likes that, but all the information goes then passed trough the website owner again?
Well, I am just waiting until we really use first OS to run all other software (libraries, system programs etc) on computer, to run web browser, to run a desktop at somewhere on Internet. And no one really knows where the fuck their data really is! Welcom Jolicloud and Facebook!
Please, stop adding features to the browser what makes it more and more like a OS. (Firefox without a microkernel, or Firefox as monolithic OS without monolithic architecture).
Give me funny, innovative and good games like Magicka with price 10-20 euros for Linux and it as gameplatform would rise like a phoenix (Magicka). Even if now posting a Source engine to Linux and Valve would give all its own games for Linux, Windows would suffer a lot, while Mac and Linux would start gaining even more popularity in homes.
Have you checked multitasking apps for Android? They offer cards and even same kind Ui's as what Maemo has on N900. You have lots of different ways and gestures to give you possibilities to get wanted.
I dont want samekind multitasking as Symbian use (the same from desktop/server OS's). I want to use what Android, iOS and WP7 has currently. A "Smart multitasking". Meaning that I as a user, dont need to think what is running in background, will apps eat my battery, did I close the heavy game or anything else. And still with "smart multitasking" I can enjoy fully things like background rsync backup to my home computer while I browse web or I watch youtube. Buffering a streamed movie from my home computer when I am typing SMS and so on.
With smart multitasking, the background jobs are not left out behind to allow them to do what ever they want like on Symbian. The laugh is with Symbian that user really need to take care about multitasking. While "smart multitasking" allows user just to forget and actually just use the damn phone as it would be a simple device what people just carry with them to be possible contact people.
The multitasking what desktop/server computers (and Symbian) use would be needed on smartphones if they would allow running two tasks same time at the screen. That the user would actually have a need for two separate window at sametime.
There are different demands for multitasking. Smartphones does not have none of them.
WIMP design (Window, Icons, Menus and Pointing Devices) does not work on smartphones or tablets. The IMP design is the fundamental function that we actually forget the window options and we just manage tasks, not windows. The task management must be moved to be made by the device itself as smart way.
On desktop/server computers the same smart multitasking would be a pain in a ass, but it is true savior on smartphones and tablets.
As said.... competition only causes harm to the customers.
To get wanted hardware with Windows, you need to choose a unwanted hardware with Windows because the wanted hardware had Windows + crap more than the unwanted hardware had.
You wanted to buy new sport shoes? Well, if you dont like to support child labors, then buy a dance shoes.... They are shoes and you can run with them so they are just fine...!
Mainstream Linux distributions takes 10-15 minutes to install and you have almost everything what you need for first days. Windows 7 install takes that 30-45 minutes and it is just a start to install all drivers (the time to download a 300MB driver printer, 3G modem configurations) and wanted software and the whole day is gone.
If you like what the pure Windows 7 is and what you can do with it. Then you really dont even do anything special with the computer.
Easy, I just bought two months ago a phone what has almost a vanilla Android, only a carriers logo at the boot, language preselected to correct, keyboard layout set correctly (scandinavia layout) and thats it.
But the phone is not from HTC, Samsung or any other crappy OEM. It is from ZTE.
Phone was SIM free from beginning (99% phones are, even iPhone today).
Still, I need to root the Android if I want to get a root access. But hey, I have done it and I dont like it. Too much security risks by that. But I did not need to remove any of files to get anything. Everything were nicely done, mostly by Google.
Next versions of Android, Google is pushing a idea that custom graphical interfaces can not be integrated to Android. That the carrier or OEM needs to keep their graphical customizations as separated applications like all Android market homescreens. To speed up a updating possibilities, allowing a carrier to update android anytime wanted without caring OEM customs. And giving a freedom to the owner to choose wanted GUI after they bought the phone.
There is already enough food in the world to feed all the people. Problem is just that most of the food is harvested and sold to developed countries and not shared between all nations.
The problem is caused by commercial and political greed... not by problems to manufacture enough food.
I would love good mobile version by default. Somekind like mobile.slashdot.org or m.slashdot.org what would give user a great mobile site (just text versions sucks!, smartphones are not like somekind Nokia S60 platforms...) what would look good but being fast and allow easily scroll comments etc.
Now the slashdot.org/palm is almost only good one as Android devices does not allow to login to site to get custom configurated UI!
