  1. Re:It's the Shadow Biosphere Lake on NASA Finds New Life (This Afternoon) · · Score: 1

I suppose it has to do with the relative stability of the nuclei, i.e. when you whack two carbon nuclei together, if it is much more likely to get a neon than to get a fluorine and a proton, then you will have more neon than fluorine. Notice the even atomic-numbered elements are more prevalent than odd-atomic numbered.

I thought of another way NASA could have spun this info: take whatever result the Drake equation gives you, and multiply it by 1.001. Not so exciting now, is it?

OTOH, what is the relative abundance of P and As in the universe?
According to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SolarSystemAbundances.png P is about 1000x more abundant than As. i.e. life isn't limited by P availability in a way that As availability helps.
So, this discovery is not much of a game-changer, IMO.

Since it seems virtually impossible to do (3), some people would prefer (2) to (1), since (1) keeps making things worse.

It's fun to read all these detailed technical discussions about rifles and ammo here on /. It's like being on a completely different site.

I qualified as Expert on both pistol (M1911A1 .45) and rifle (I think it was an M14) in the Navy, but I'm sure it wasn't that demanding of an evaluation. I don't have a ton of shooting experience.

I've thought about picking up a rifle to keep at home and to teach my son about shooting, but I would like to have something more than a .22 (i.e. useful for something other than squirrels), yet not expensive. Any suggestions?

Nevertheless I am opposed to the intrusiveness and the fact that the whole scheme is aimed at the wrong group of people.

Second, the nervous system, including the brain, is actually the most resistant to radiation damage in the whole body, while ova and sperm are the most sensitive.

Third, magnitude means quantity, while I think you are arguing that the scanner radiation is different in kind (quality), so you seem to contradict yourself.
