The exact same thing can be said about Windows servers. Any properly configured box stands a much better chance of fending off brute force attacks. On my old Windows server that was running ssh I would log several thousand brute force attempts daily, with nobody every successfully breaking in. What does that tell you? Basically that I know how to configure a server, and that I used a really long pass phrase instead of a simple password. Security 101 stuff.

I never claimed the two would be the same security-wise, I just said if Linux was the top market share OS, it would be the biggest target. How well it would fare compared to Windows is something I was not speculating on, or blindly assuming.

If you are relying on your operating system for security, you are taking the wrong approach to security. All major OS have had exploitable flaws. Security is not software nor anything you can buy or install - it is a set of policies, procedures, and practices. The actual software involved is irrelevant.

Yes, then the target would be the next biggest OS down the chain. The problem isn't "solved", it is just moved. Much like how surveillance cameras don't really cut down the crime rates, they just move them to a different area. If Linux had more of a presence it would be as big of a target as Microsoft. MS is just the current "low hanging fruit". Sorry, but the solution to security problems should never be "switch your operating system and every piece of software you currently use".

I don't think you know what the word "fiscal" means. Do you really think the government has more money than all the businesses in the country? Hint: they don't. My argument holds water because I am talking about all businesses - wherever your advertising money comes from is the ass you have to kiss. If the government ran a newspaper, you don't need to worry about this, because you are not depending on advertisement to keep running.

Thinking that "reporting what he sees" is not biased by the person seeing it is pretty naive thinking. Every "reporter" or "journalist" has some bias - how much of that comes out in the writing is the real question.

Yes, becasue the BBC never puts out any stories critical of the British government.

Who do you think has more fiscal power in the US - the government, or the businesses? Now say a paper wants to run a story that would make it's biggest advertiser look bad - do you think the story will run? You won't run into that if a paper isn't relying on advertising dollars to keep it running.

  16. Re:Why's this on Slashdot? on Girl Seeks Help On Facebook During Assault · · Score: 1

The girl was raped and the guy left the room. It's not like Facebook saved the girl from being raped. She contacted her friend and requested she contact her mother, then she escaped and called her mother herself from a payphone, then the guy was arrested. There's not much of a Facebook tie-in.

    From the article:
He later walked in naked and tried to pull off her pants, she said, but she kicked him away and screamed, according to the complaint. When he left, she got out her iPod and found an acquaintance on the social Advertisement networking website Facebook.com. She begged her friend to contact her mother and tell her to come pick her up.

As she was sending the message, Cesmat went back to her room and sexually assaulted the girl, the complaint said.

So no Facebook didn't "save her from being raped", but she did send out the message before the actual assault happened.
