  1. Rebuttal on Evangelical Scientists Debate Creation Story · · Score: 1

Creation Ministries International have put together this article which rebuts the claims of BioLogos:

    http://creation.com/historical-adam-biologos

The conclusion of the article reads:

"It is disingenuous for Biologos to claim no evidence for Adam and Eve for several reasons. First, their conclusions are based on evolutionary assumptions. One cannot legitimately claim something to be proven without testing the assumptions behind that claim. To do otherwise amounts to circular reasoning and question begging, and a rejection of any alternative theory following from this is thus reduced to nothing more than a straw man argument. Second, the majority of data fit nicely into the straightforward biblical model, including a single starting couple a mere 6,000 years ago. While there are several unresolved issues with the biblical model as it relates to the data at hand, the same can be said about every evolutionary model, so one cannot conclude that the Bible has been invalidated by the available evidence. Albert Einstein is rumored to have opined, “A thousand experiments cannot prove me right. A single experiment can prove me wrong.” This is sound logic. Francis Collins and BioLogos would do well to heed his advice."

Here's a thought experiment to illustrate my point: Imagine that all medical research and treatment, everywhere in the US from now on, had to adhere to strict supervision by a board of politicians and clergy with fundamentalist views. Now wait 100 years. What do you think the state of US medical technology would be in such a case? Why conduct a thought experiment? Look at history for an analogy. Both UK and US were at one time Christian nations - a fundamentalist Christianity. The rule-of-law, democracy, freedoms, dare I say it - science, that you and I benefit from today are a flow-on from solid foundations laid down in those times.
  19. gotta love it on A Field Trip To the Creation Museum · · Score: 1

I'm loving the controversy this whole thing is stirring up - to see the die hard humanistic evolutionists working themselves into a lather over one museum in the middle of nowhere setup by a bunch of 'nobodys'. It reminds me of that scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:28-29 - "He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him."

If I sincerely believed that there was no God and that I came about by chance through a series of random mutations over millions of years, then I'd be pretty uncomfortable knowing that there is a rising tide of educated, intelligent, well-equipped 'fundys' beginning to erode the foundation on which I'd built my worldview.

Romans 1:20 - "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

I recently tried the latest Ubuntu and Fedora Core distros hoping to make the long-anticipated switch, however I still cannot successfully resume from a suspend-to-RAM (or hardisk) with either. It's probably that I've got some weird unsupported hardware in my machine, but needless to say, this works flawlessly under WinXP. It's a real a show stopper for me as I hate waiting for my machine to boot up every time and I'm not going to just leave it running when idle. So...until my hardware is supported or I get new hardware that is supported, I won't be switching to Linux on the desktop. It really bugs me that such a small thing is holding me back, but the reality is that WinXP does everything I need right now. I should mention that I've been using Linux on the server-side for many years and am very happy with it there :)

  23. call it what it is - a HPV vaccine! on Merck To Halt Lobbying For Vaccine · · Score: 1

My understanding of the vaccine in question is that it works by attacking HPV *not* the cancer itself. To call the vaccine a 'cervical cancer vaccine' is simply misleading. It may be that tying it to the word 'cancer' will get better coverage in the media and therefore awareness in the general community, however I think it will also create confusion and ignorance. Also, it may send out a message that 'so long as you've got the vaccine, you're OK!'. The reality is that you can contract HPV and not develop cervical cancer, and vice versa - develop cervical cancer without contracting HPV!

How is this relevant and why does it matter?

The controversy is about whether to make the vaccine mandatory or not. If people are going to make an educated decision on whether they want the vaccine to be mandatory or not, there needs to be no ambiguity about the fact that this is a HPV vaccine. HPV is the horse that pulls the cart (in most cases) - that's what should be focused on here.

I suspect that some proponents of mandatory vaccination would like to blur the distinction between the following questions:

    1) Am I at *any* risk of developing cervical cancer?. Answer: Always yes - regardless of lifestyle choices.

    2) Am I at *any* risk of contracting HPV?. Answer: Sometimes yes, often no - based directly on lifestyle choices.
