Actually, the problem isn't the *freezing* at all -- it's the thawing. When the system thaws, the reperfusion of oxygen into the tissue causes a sudden reanimation of biological processes that most organsims are unable to handle properly. Ice crystals alone don't general cause as much of a problem as the body's reaction to that damage. (Source: some Cell articles from a year or two ago, but I don't have a citation handy. Immunohistochemistry in chipmunk brain slices, I believe.)
Because we know that the media is really good at predicting the future of technology. I mean, check out my personal jet pack... what's that you say? Oh. Right.
One of them (Dr. Mello) works a floor below me at UMass Med, and is a genuinely *nice* guy. It's good to know that getting the Nobel doesn't seem to require being ruthless in your research.
Froogle was a good idea that was poorly executed. Searching for anything other than a specific product returned pages and pages of listings for the same item under slightly diffent names. I hope any integration of Froogle into the main index will include a better system for managing dupes than Froogle had.
Actually, parent raises a good point -- do we *want* Linux to go mainstream? Personally, the moment any of my relatives figures out what Ubuntu is is the moment I switch to another distro. There's enough PEBKAC in my life without doing support for nix too.

It was a not-so-clever reference to CmdrTaco's first story on the iPod: http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/10/23/ 1816257
Verizon CEO: "An iPhone! Ha! Wireless? More space than a Nomad? Lame." Since when does Taco run Verizon? *ducks*
You mean... Slashdot doesn't always tell the truth?
So says the Ministry of Information? Like, the Ministry of Truth? "Don't install Vista. Drink Victory coffee."
...is only good if it's for *my* party.
Oops, bad link. Just trust me on this one.
Wasn't this in Scientific American, like, two years ago? What has changed? http://www.sciamdigital.com/index.cfm?fa=Products. ViewIssuePreview&ARTICLEID_CHAR=B3AA39F1-2B35-221B -63CD1B9A1E124351/

Do NOT install Vista. Judiously.
