This whole slashdot article is misleading. The drive itself is 100 percent capable of playing movies. It's Windows and PC hardware that aren't ready for HD movies.
Keep in mind people, HD-DVD uses the same DRM, right down to every last line of code.
So when PCs have HDMI outputs and software that'll playback BD movies, commercial movies will be just fine. Nothing to see here, move along
I'm gonna have to disagree with the activity amount. I've never bought a console based on activity. I've never bought a DDR pad for my playstation (although I do have the Guitar Hero Gibson laying around here awaiting the sequel).
Thanks everyone, next complaint that the industry is stale is still scheduled for 3 months, as usual!
These kind of articles are perfect for a slow news day, but with such gems like Microsoft claiming they want to help Linux and the RIAA claiming they've won, there's really no need for non-news.
You completely just ignored what I just said: The $1000+ models are Pioneer friggin Elites. The top of the top of the line in home entertainment gear. They aren't some mid-range Toshiba or RCA. These are what rockstars get for their thousand inch built-into-wall TVs. When mid-range BluRay drives come out, they'll be in vaguely the exact same range as the Toshiba HD-DVD
Yawn, call me when they start paying players to waste their time. Shadowbane may have the single worst interface and control scheme of any MMO I've ever played, and I've played most of them.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. They have made a few changes (wireless, and tilt detection), but there was nothing at all wrong with the dual shock design.
Cough. Gotta call your bullshit bluff there. From blu-ray.com
Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson).
Basically, what the article says is: you're completely wrong, dude.

360 HD-DVD..doesn't play games, people. This add-on only allows videoplayback.

My PS2 has never broken down. This is despite my best efforts to drop it onto pavement, into puddles, and so on.
Pioneer's model costs $1800. For god's sake, wait.

The $1000+ players are Pioneer Elites. They sell /regular/ DVD players for $500+ still.
How about 'Buy a new tv because in 2009 NTSC signal will no longer be broadcast and all video will be HD to begin with"
2011 for PS4. Sony has stated and consistently met their 'every 5 years' schedule.
Gamesradar made up that rumor and Sony later refuted such claims. It's basically a rehash of a previous rumor, which Sony also denied at the time. FUD
This rumor has been entirely denied about 50 times by Sony now in official statements. PLEASE update the article, this is just stupid.

Ruin the whole movie? puh-leaze. Aerith is such a minor role as to be insignificant. Her lines could be entirely cut and no one would notice.
I think the UMD thing may be a FUD. I went to Walmart this week, more UMDs than ever before, by far!
