Apple needs a real desktop mid tower to compete not court.
Like a $700 - $1500 desktop. The mini is very very over priced at $600 - $800 for the hardware that is has now and putting a atom in at $600 will be going to far.
Maybe have a $400 to $500 atom based mini and maybe even a $600 - $800 better mini with a $700+ real desktop.
apple can go amd and use 780g or 790gx with side port ram to have a nice low end system with good on board video that does not use system ram and gives apple a good low end system at $600 - $1000.
The imac is held back by weak video and high cost laptop cpus in a time when $700+ desktop have high end dual cores or quads with core i7 systems at $950+ and up then even putting in a laptop quad core will not cut it as they cost a lot and make apple look bad with a $1200+ AIO with a weak cpu + lower mid range video when there are core i7 systems with better video 4gb or more ram at $1000+ and even high end video / SLI or cross fire with 6gb of ram at $1500+.
The mac pro is nice but has a high cost and weak video for it's price and the dual cpu board and sever ram push costs up more. At lest have a $1200 - $1500+ tower like in the g4 / g5 days.
Apple can have a dual core i7 system at $2400+ but if they do that make it all dual cpu with a 1 cpu core i7 system with desktop ram at $1200+ no 1 cpu on a high cost dual cpu board.
Or just kill windows 7 by having mac os x 10.6 for all systems at $150 - $200.
How about drivers that uses background apps? like ati, nvidia, and intel video? most wifi cards, sound cards / on board sound chips, printers / scanners, and other usb stuff like web cams and more?
Plug in's like adobe reader, quick time, Windows media player, java, and others?
Most anti virus apps have 2 or more apps in the back round + some have a in the front update checker / installer.
Cable / sat DVR and boxes should go in to a low power mode. When not needed You can spin down the HDD when it is not needed and how about put the cpu in a sleep mode / CPU throttling.
a drivers license in a wallet will be very hard to read like a I-pass / EZ-pass that can be blocked by some types windshields and needs to be mounted in the right place.
You don't even need a Virus or Malware to pull this off all you is a pay on link that takes your CC # and that likely will work even on super locked systems.
Some should rip in to the fake person giving out the tickets like people do to the real meter maids as you see do on A&E parking wars. And if they are not real say I'm calling the cops as I don't think they will like to have people giving out fake tickets.
They should have low cost 5 system packs for Home Premium for people that have a few pc's in there home and Professional for small business / home business that are to small for Enterprise.
A Atom base mini is a cpu power down grade and there is no way that it will be a good buy at $600 maybe $400 - $500 but it should use ddr2 not high cost ddr3 laptop ram. AND DON"T thing about not giving a free mini dp to dvi cable with it $30-$100 more to use your own display??.
Apple may try to sell a system with this a 1gb of ram at $600 but that will make the old mini still look good even more so if it drops to $500 or less and ddr 3 will just make it cost more as the cpu is so slow that it is better to get more ddr2 at lower cost.
That will also tell Psystar we can even try to match or do better then your hardware but we can make the mini look even worse next to your system.
You can get a nice mid tower for about $600 with a high end amd dual core + lower-mid range (much better then 9400m) video with 790gx on board video with it's own ram or just use the 790gx (64-128 mb just for video is cool and faster then 9400m) if you want to pay less.
DVI can do VGA real easy. AGP died to pci-e. AGP was able to do more then just video but you did not see that much and very few boards had more then one agp bus.
Pci-e is being used by all kinds of cards. Firewire 800 uses the same connectors as the planed fire wire 1600 / 3200
