I'm Canadian and I'm loving this. US is the one that made this happen. More access to information is a double edged sword. One thing is for sure, I don't want anybody with gun charges to come into Canada. As for drug charges, that's subjective... but you are the ones waging the war on drugs. So, change your policies, or learn to live with them.
I've done exactly that a few times. Often, if I like one song, I'll download a few others from the cd. If I like what I hear, I'll buy the CD. I guess this buying trend is being completely ignored by MPAA.
Anyhow, the market has changed, yet the recording industry hasn't. If they don't get their act together, they'll either find themselves without a job, or they'll end up causing a war with all their legal propaganda crap.
Too bad they waited that long... because in my opinion, amd was superior for a good while when they brought in the 64bit CPUs and dual cores (and before then too). Now that intel has caught up (even surpassed) AMD, Dell now offers AMD.
It's almost like Intel knew their product wasn't as good as AMD, and they were willing to pay big $$ to Dell in order to prevent the social masses from accepting AMD as the better product. But now, maybe Intel knows they have the better product, so they are not bending over for Dell anymore... someone gets pissed, and the story gets revealed.
This is too bad for AMD, cause Intel probably made huge $$ when Dell was only offering their product. That money probably got invested in R&D, and facilitated the rise of Intel's next generation product (core duo).
Another idea I could see working would be a movie service that would provide all movies downloads for like 1$ each. This system could also facilitate user feedback to track information like favorite movies, actors, directors, writers, and other people involved in movies. All the money collected could go towards the creation of new movies. As for who does what movie, we could use the collected feedback data and give first choice to the most popular people. If everyone loves a particular actor, let him decide which movie he prefers doing that year.
I see this as the basis of an engine to promote the creation of art that is freely available in the public domain.
As for people wanting to make big $$, they could just use the fame they acquired and do something imaginative with that. I'm sure they could figure it out (10000$ for special appearence at the tonight show, 50000$ for commercials, etc). Also, each movie could be available in 'platinum edition' with bonus material (posters, catalogues, extra content) at a higher price. So lets say I love the LOTR movie that I got in digital format for 1$, I could still go and buy the 40$ platinum edition. Then, the money from the platinum sales could go directly to the people involved in the movie, not the movie making body... therefore creating an incentive to making a big hit movie.
Crazy idea, I know... but it could work. Anybody else want to add/change something?
I'm part of that 20% (even though my version is legal) and I seriously don't care anymore. My box has been going without a security update for almost 8 months. I just hope that if my PC becomes part of a botnet, that it tries to DOS attack microsoft.
For all important stuff, I use linux (Gentoo). As for games, I use wine. I mean, I'm able to play world of warcraft with very good FPS (nvidia/opengl, yeah baby), so who needs windows? At this point, I don't think I'll ever install windows again... EVER!!! It's funny, but I'm proud of saying so.
The funny thing is that MS thinks that they'll make money with Vista by forcing people to upgrade because of the new DirectX... But people like me don't need that when using wine with nvidia/opengl.
Simply put, musicians can control their creation by controlling who attends their concerts. I think that recorded music isn't as good as a live performance, and this is where artists needs to get their revenue from (live performances). Therefore, I think musicians crying over this issue are just unhappy that they can't 'milk the cow' like they used to. All I can say to them is GROW UP!! Adjust to the new business model! or make some room for others that can!!
To put this into perspective, lets say I call myself an artist and that my main work of art is my house that I custom built. I can't start suing people every time they look at a picture they took of my house... but I can sure as hell organize visits and charge 5$ a head. For this, they get the full tour, not just a glimpse of a 2D picture.
So, I think pictures of my house should be free. On the same note, all recorded music should be free! An artist should be proud of having lots of people choosing to listen to their music. This would be a benefit to them, because more people would show up to their concerts. Once you have the crowd enjoying your creation, then you can make tons of money on other stuff (custom shirts, limited edition CDs, etc). And for those of you that don't believe me, hell, my gf just bought a limited edition CD of Tom Waits for 60$. Not only did she get a nice package with extra material that you can't get on the internet, but she actually felt good about supporting the artist that she admires. Hard core fans will pay for this shit, so it's up to you get get hard core fans and produce this crap.
Just like my house, I would be proud of having tons of people showing my picture around... that way I get more people showing up to get the full tour of my house.
So please, oh please stop whining and adapt to the new business model.
You'de be suprised of the performance on linux. I'm getting real good FPS using opengl (just have to make sure you use the hardware acceleration).
Also, on a windows box you usually run an anti-virus which can take up system resources. On top of that, there's spyware to consider which is a non-issue with linux.
I run a dual core amd 64 and I have a feeling that linux kernels know how to use these resources better than windows (I run gentoo, so I know for sure that compile time is greatly reduced with a dual core). From my experience, I wound't be surprised to see better performance under linux with a dual core 64 cpu.
I recently installed WOW on linux using Wine... It works great. I hope I don't get banned just because I'm using a different emulator. Does anybody know if they can tell the difference? I didn't see any mention of Wine in the article.
I totally agree. Making some drugs illegal creates a black market for these drugs... which makes them more accessible to kids. When drugs are legal, people will get them from legal chanels (controled quality, less hassle), therefore reducing the need for the black market. No black market, no easy access to underage people.
To illustrate my point, when I was in high school, I could get my hands on all sorts of drugs. However, when it came to alcohol, it was much more difficult to get.
It's the resolution.
Having a 32" monitor that pushes 1366x768 (wide) give the same productivity as a 19" monitor that pushes 1280x1024.
What does improve productivity is dual monitors. If you can have 2 of your applications running in full screen mode, and can cut and paste between them, that definitively improves productivity. I do web development and I always code in one window and see the result in the other.
As far as big screens is concerned, they wont help that much until they get better resolutions. If I can get my hands on an affordable 40" LCD monitor that pushes
3200x1200 (2 time 1600x1200), then I'd go for that. But as we speek, it's way cheaper to get 2 19" and hook them up together with xorg.
All of this talk makes me think of something I heard years ago that made me laugh... It's not the size of the wand that counts, it's the magic in the stick.:)
I completely agree with the 'who cares' attitude. Why does it matter if a student attends the class lectures or not? In some university courses, you may end up having up to 500 students per class and because of this large number, it seems that class discussion is on a downwards trend. What I think students should attend is the labs cause that is when they apply the theory and that's when interesting questions might pop in their head.
All I know is that most of my learning was done either by myself (reading books, articles on the net, tutorials), or in the labs with experienced individual that can answer specific technical questions.
n'est pas? is like saying 'is not'. It should be "n'est ce pas"... (is it not)
'that makes piracy a felony--but only if a monetary profit is made'
This is the most common sense I've heard in a while concerning this issue.
WOOOOOOOOOT!!!. Now if only Canada could do the same, I'de be even happier. But it has to start somewhere.
I'm Canadian and I'm loving this. US is the one that made this happen. More access to information is a double edged sword. Disrespecting others is like sending them an invitation to disrespect you. When there's money involved, it can get nasty.
:). And to all you fu@#$%s out there, beware... your turn is coming up :)
I'm glad the company got what it deserved, and I'm sure the employee will enjoy his new employment.
I love karma
I think that's not a bad idea.

I agree totally. This is the biggest marketing bullshit I've heard in a while. lol
