The problem with Mint, AFAIK, is that it doesn't seem to support RAID or LVM. For many of us who require at a minimum, RAID-1, Mint is simply not an option. I've been running Mint in a VM since yesterday. I like it. But the fact it doesn't support RAID+LVM is a complete show stopper for me and everyone else I know who runs Linux. Its really too bad as it looks like a cool distro.

Is it possible to take a ubuntu-alternative install with the partitions already set up, point its /etc/apt/sources.list to mint repos and [un]install the proper packages?

Call him now, while nothing's going on. Do you really want risk another few minutes of fire or other danger while you're screaming over the phone to the officer "please call 911 and tell them I exist!"? Get the error corrected in their system before it's too late. If the problem is that your street isn't official, hit up your city council and get it on the map.

Careful with your rhetoric. The "occupy movement" should express itself as a voting awareness movement. If it isn't using the soapbox to solicit change via the ballot box (and it can't get the change it wants by the hury box), there's only one box left, and that's seditious.

I am told that when all is said and down they make a killing at it.

And they're stupid. The point of an LLC is to prevent things like losing your house et al when someone sues the company. If the house is owned by the company (not the person), then isn't it fair game? Pay yourself a good salary and use that to buy the stuff you want to keep for yourself. dd's a poor solution; if it hits a bad block on the drive, the default is the fail. Your best bet is to use a program that recreates the partition, formats it, and copies the data in place like partimage or ghost. Bonus points for not having to copy unused space ( even if you zero the drive first like some suggested, you'll have gigs of wasted space from deleted installation files). Worst case scenario, use ddrescue instead of dd since ddrescue is a little more verbose and has easier options for skipping bad blocks.
