  4. Microsoft benefits from piracy on The Pirated Software Problem in the 3rd World · · Score: 0

I speak as a student from India, and my analysis of the piracy situation tells me that it gives a huge boost to microsoft's monopoly. 99% of my classmates use pirated version of windows, the situation is the same everywhere in India, all students use pirated software. In an informal survey i had conducted, almost 8 in 10 people said they would shift to linux if they were not able to obtain windows absolutely free. And these very students are going to use "genuine" windows in their work environments, someday becoming PHBs and pushing for Windows Vista Ultimate Chair Throwing Edition. (Just my 2*10^-2 $ )

  20. Thats what happens.. on Indian College Students Face Bleak Prospects · · Score: 0

When Engineering and Technical colleges sprout on road-sides like grocery stores. Im not exaggerating, the so called engineering colleges in india are a dime a dozen, and the quality is atrocious. Only a few of the 'elite' colleges teach students something, the rest hire (previously) unemployed grads of these same colleges to teach the poor, helpless students. When the professor of a CS class copies the bubble-sort algorithm from the text-book to the black-board, what else do you expect?? And no, it doesnt stop here, the bigger problem is that most of these colleges are run by politicians to mint money. Since almost everyone wants to 'be an engineer' in India, people are willing to pay exorbitant sums to 'secure' a seat in these very 'colleges'. PS: I am fortunate enough to be in a good Institute here in India, but my other friends are rotting in the _other_ colleges.

  24. Reliability vs. Features.. on Consumers Look For More Utilitarian Cellphones · · Score: 0

Consumer appliances manufacturers, and cell phone makers in particular, are increasingly sacrificing reliability and durability for features. I, for one- find this trend disturbing. IMO ( note that i have lefe out the humble part) a cell phone is a communication device meant to help keep us in touch with others.period. Anything else is a waste of the consumers' money and cell phone battery life.. Why cant manufacturers focus on the essential qualities of good products- reliability, durability, long-life..etc instead of good for nothing flashy features? To illustrate my point- i have two phones..one with all the flashy trash, and the other is a simple phone which can make calls with no extra features. The 'simpleton' survived for 5 hours under water, has been dropped on the floor atleast 100 times over a 5 year period..while the 'flashy' could not handle a few drops of water! And yes, the simpler phone is 1/3rd the price of the one loaded with features which are really good-for-nothing.

  25. Re:India on Is Silicon Valley Reproducible? · · Score: 0

Yes, i agree- Indians DO lack the killer instinct. One more point of importance is our ( i am an Indian) aversion to risk-taking, fear of failure, and opposition to anything creative, different, or out-of-the-box. As a CS undergrad, i am worried about that my classmates believe that working for big companies like google, microsoft, etc is the sole aim of their education..Yes, all of them will end up digging up the dirt for silicon valley.
