"Finally we have an election where candidates from both parties do not generate a lot of negative feelings from the general populace"
umm...I hate to break the news to you but these two ass clowns don't thrill anybody who has ever thought about the issues. Obama is an empty suit who talks in incomplete ideas with no substance "to solve our energy problems we are going to need to conserve energy". He never follows with any wisdom as to how he will make that happen. McCain is just as bad with his general statements on the economy with no substance anywhere. Perhaps we should look at drafting Norman Schwarzkopf? I have no idea about his politics but at least he knows what leadership is..It's not just saying whatever the crowd in front of you wants to hear.
"I can't see any good reason to blame Mozilla or Microsoft;"
Apparently you are new to/. There is always a reason to blame Microsoft, George Bush, or Fox News. Please do not try to cloud the issue with facts it only enrages the proletariat.
You are 100% correct. Bill Gates actually said in an interview "if your going to steal software it might as well be ours". He knew what he was doing when he made the universal unlocking key for NT Server 4.0 "1111-1111-1111-1111". He intended to create the installed base and then collect the licenses later as businesses using Windows needed to upgrade. It has worked well and he is a genious.
Modern journalism teaches to ask "who's the Republican at fault, what can be done by Government to change it, when can we raise taxes to pay for it, where did Bush go wrong, and why didn't we listen to the left before now"
If you hate to sound cynical then don't be cynical. If MS gave a billion dollars to the children's burn center and the news were posted on \. most of the responses would tell in great detail how Windows based computers spontaneously combust and the only reason MS is doing it is to avoid federal penalties. It should be a goal not to be a party to that negative and nasty crowd who seem to get an erection by bashing MS. It's a simple study about ergonomics in the workplace. Thousands have been done before and it won't be the last. If Bill Gates were as evil as \. seems to think wouldn't he be in politics?
Face it, the "enterprise crap" that you see as a waste of money is needed by IT Managers to adequately maintain the enterprise. The desktops of a 3000 user company requires a level of management that Linux can't provide and Linux developers don't want to provide because they see it as "enterprise crap" rather than management tools.
MS still does not charge by core but rather physical CPU only. Based on that you can run a 4-way quad core server for the same money which makes MSSQL compare quite favorably to Oracle or DB2. I have DB2, MSSQL, MYSQL, and Progress installed in my company and MSSQL is the only one that does not require daily attention. All of the other databases have dedicated DBA's while MSSQL is maintained by the system admins when anything is needed (rarely). It runs more databases (mission critical) than anything but DB2 and the billing software is on MSSQL because it has to work. MYSQL has three databases and has issues frequently. Most folks tell me that if MYSQL has issues it's because my DBA isn't very good. I agree but the guy who works on MSSQL isn't the sharpest tool in the shed either and it always works. When it come to TCO MSSQL wins hands down.
Don't take this the wrong way but I can tell you don't have much experience at this level. I manage a hospital network with a thousand desktops and hundreds of thin clients. We have over 2 hundred servers (20 Unix, the rest Windows 2003 or 2k). You cannot assume that everyone will always use standard work hours, remote wake on lan is filled with problems I am sure you have not dealt with, and some updates or sofware installs can take 20 minutes to run. You can't assume that all of your hardware will operate identically because it is likely that the age ranges from brand new to over 4 years old. There are many issues related to this topic that from the unexperienced perspective are easy to miss.
Turning off or powering down desktop computers at night would wreak havoc on most enterprises larger than 25 desktops. We use after hours to push updates, install new software, and perform other maintenance. Your costs for new hardware would also likely increase significantly as the most likely time for hardware to fail is on power up. If hardware is running it typically stays running and only fails on a change in power status. If you changed to this "Green Policy" you would need to update your enterprise during work hours which would reduce the productivity of your labor force (also expensive). I think this is a case os someone who doesn't know what their talking about trying to make interesting dinner conversation. It is annoying at best for those of us who actually work in IT for a living.
The fact is that all news is slanted to the view point of the presenter. Liberals may not notice as much because 80% of the news is slanted their way. Until Fox news came along it was closer to 100%. Everyone should be free to hear the news from their political perspective, with 80% of the new remaining Liberal and about 50% of the people being on the liberal side of things look for Fox News' ratings to continue to climb.
Absolutely correct! Find someone who has worked in this size shop before and pay them well. Their experience will be well worth the results they can bring. I see many shops that try to low ball their support by hiring a "computer guy" that has just completed training, these same people would never let a mechanic with no experience touch their car. Don't try to learn it on the fly, one major mistake and your done.
We have deployed to several hundred desktops with no real issues so far. Some non-techie users are confused by the tab but most seem to like it. We will likly push the mass update with WSUS within 30 days.
Good Luck
Designing an OS that uses similar commands to an existing one is hardly reverse engineering. If it were then it is fair to say that Linux is a reverse engineering job of Microsofts Xenix OS (Obviously just as ridiculous). You have presented no evidence to support your claims. I can find no credible evidence to support these claims which seem to rest on that single "why I hate Microsoft" manifesto. You should stop taking everything you read that is anti MS as fact. The vast majority is patently false or based on half truths or conjecture. Take a look at the links I have added for a clearer view of the story.
Yes I have and at this point what you have is "God's honest truth, I read it on the Internet". I believe I am supposed to reply with "Ah-ha" or "nanny-nanny-boo-boo" or something like that with this ridiculous argument. I don't think you have a grasp on what you are saying. Are you suggesting that Bill Gates took media from CP/M with filed serial numbers and gave it to IBM as his OS? If he were reverse engineering something I would think that would be a waste of time as he would not give the media to anyone. I also have trouble with the media apparently being Metal based with stamped serial numbers? Who does that? Anywhere? Face it young man, you have been fed a line of crap and swallowed it hook, line and sinker.
As expected, this is yet another attempt to rewrite history with a pointer to a home grown website.
And I never said "Microsoft is so wonderful". I was pointing out that they saw themselves as anti-establishment, much the same as the open source community today, but in the end they became what they were fighting against. It's hardly a compliment but it does not state that Bill Gates was evil from birth, had no right to live as the son of Lawyers, or that MS should be terminated. The attitude you display is identical to the one you attribute to Bill Gates and I am sad to say is not unique.
"When the IBM representatives showed up at his doorstep, Gates recognized this lucky break for what it was, and promised them an OS. Because he didn't have one and couldn't make one (at least not good and fast enough) he bought the rights to a CP/M clone from Seattle Computing Products, and filed off the serial numbers. "
Exactly hos does one file the serial numbers off of an OS anyway?
Taking factual arguments from someone who writes a manifesto called "Why I hate Microsoft" shows an astonishing lack of judgement.
From what I can tell, this story has absolutely no basis in fact. MS bought the code legally and had the ability to modify it in any way. MS was a small company back then and would have been ripe for litigation which IBM would have supported to break their deal once the realized what a mistake they had made. If you can find any reference to this anywhere please post it as I would like to read it.
Even if this were true, unknowingly purchasing stolen property does not make you incompetent and or a criminal. This is one of those cases where supernatural powers area attributed to Bill Gates by someone simply saying "he had to know". He is not Psychic, all knowing or all seeing, nor does he learn through osmosis. His reflection is visible in a mirror and he has no allergies to silver. He is a man who has business accumen and a competitive nature that most folks cannot grasp. I do no relish defending Bill Gates (especially here) but I get so annoyed with some of the ridiculous statements I read here everyday.
"There are those we read daily who would outlaw Windows and force the world to run Linux for their own good as it is obviously the optimal choice. They will in the end become what they fought to eliminate just like MS."
Perhaps it's time to take Firefox to the corporate world and allow it to be managed through MS Group Policy and ensure that it can be deployed in mass without user intervention. This would be the fastest way to gain corporate acceptance which would introduce Firefox to an entirely new audience.
Wow, that was really assanine. Because his parents were lawyers and had a few bucks that means he was raised on stolen money? He bought DOS for $50k on the open market. The gentleman who sold it was happy to get the money, you see he wrote it to sell as many programmers do. MS wrote OS\2 for IBM and broke off the relationship when IBM began to realize that they had made terrible mistakes by not understanding the market and tried to renegotiate their deal. NT is architecturally different from OS\2 as MS brought in Dave Cutler from DEC to start from scratch on NT. If anything Dave Cutler followed the design of VMS, not OS\2.
You have no understanding of the history of data processing, your rants are based on your personal lack of knowledge and we are all dumber for having read your comments.

Isn't this like taking a Ferrari and turning it into a 74 Ford Pinto?
Does anybody really car? I mean they are the Packard Bell of the new millennium.

So we should just do what the man behind the curtain says and wait more than 30 years to find out if he's right? How can I get that job...?
