I don't think anyone would disagree that computers are far better at matrix algebra than humans could ever be
I do. Tell your computer to invert the square matrix of size 10^10^10^10^10 with ones and twos alternating on the main diagonal and zero everywhere else. Computers can crunch numbers faster, but humans can recognize a pattern in a problem and exploit it in a novel way. That's what I call intelligence.
When it sends a request to an origin server, the user agent sends a Cookie request header to the origin server if it has cookies that are applicable to the request
Actually, it is even more scary than this. Have a look at the protocol: here's how it works:
1- Firefox automatically downloads a list of 32-bit hashes of "dangerous" addresses
2- when the user browses on a site matching one of these hashes, Firefox sends a request to Google for a 256-bit version of the same hash
3- does the site match the 256-bit hash? If yes, warn user; if not, continue silently.
Convinced? Well, here's how it really works:
1- <insert name here> tells Google to monitor www.terrorist.com
2- Google adds the 32-bit hash of www.terrorist.com to the list
3- when the browser sends a request for the 256-bit hash of www.terrorist.com, Google replies with a hash that does not match www.terrorist.com
4- the user notices nothing strange and continues browsing
5- Google sends <insert name here> a list of all the people browsing on www.terrorist.com, identified through cookies (including their GMail password).
Please forget the usual "??? - Profit!" jokes, and go warn the Firefox developers.
Now just release Boobuntu... ... and we'll be happy
C++ without solid understanding of OOP?

Head First C#

· Score: 5, Insightful
For computer programmers who do not have a solid understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP), learning the C# programming language can be rather challenging, even if they have experience with C or C++
Well if you have "experience with C++" but no "solid understanding of OOP", there might already be a problem with your programming skills.
Why should it be called "Windows" at all?
If it is as backward-compatible as (let's say) Ubuntu or OpenSuse or OsX, then technically it is not Windows (ok, you do not need to remind me of all the commercial reasons).
Besides it, it is a very well known issue that most old dos games run much better on Linux+DosBox than on Windows+command prompt
couldn't he have just downloaded some free Windows or Linux based A/V rather than buying crap at CompUSA?
Most well-known "free" antivirus for Windows are free "for personal use only". A school network definitely isn't personal use.
Suppose you want to harvest all users' emails by simply mailing them to your own account. Why on h^Hearth do you need the password of this account to be written in the source code?
I strongly object to the fact that virus evolutionist theories are taught on this forum. Actually, all the viruses were created by God 6000 years ago, and no evolution can happen. You have no proof. Your fallacious theories should not be taught in public schools.
As ESR used to say, simply don't use nicknames. Real Hackers (tm) (c) (all rights reversed) should be proud of what they do, and therefore use their real name.
Shame that they've been pretty useless for everyone but graphic artists so far eh? Far from it. Some people in the university here (I am in Pisa, Italy) teach their lectures using a tablet pc (connected to a beamer) as a blackboard. You teach your lecture sitting down at your desk and looking at the students' faces, then you publish a screencast online for the ones that couldn't come to the lesson. Very useful indeed, for both students and lecturers.
Sounds like a pain in the nuts to me.
You say that, but it's EXACTLY what you have to do to learn kanji or kana... or hanzi, for the Chinese. Therefore, learning Chinese or Japanese is a pain in the nuts. Nothing to see here.
Essentially, he has been spending all his time searching for ways to prune that tree to a reasonable level.
Unfortunately for him, he is working for Microsoft labs in China You know, Bonsai are quite a tradition in the Far East.

There is no indication that Firefox sends any of the current browser cookies to Google in step #3
Evidence is here (section 3.7.1):
The client performs a datarequest by sending an HTTP POST request to the URI:
and here (section 4.3.4):
When it sends a request to an origin server, the user agent sends a Cookie request header to the origin server if it has cookies that are applicable to the request

Oh, please stop talking about McCain and the US elections now.
Here, fixed the typo for you:

Cool. This way on, Firefox 7.0 will be looking much like Emacs.

If you plan to add and remove elements from your Very Large Array often, a Very Large Linked List is a better solution
Why is this piece of news in the "apple" section, since it is related to windows as well?

And, why do wheelbarrows have wheels?
...is that all their number crunching programs will be written in Fortran 2015.
...if they decided to put a tax on Slashdot comments instead. Best way to zero out the national debt in just a couple of months.
Sir, if we invert the polarity of the brain receptors we can create a quantum power surge that will destroy the pirate ship. I just need these algae.
I'd be willing to be a guinea pig for this project
