    Oh, *that* was it? Slashdot editorial quality is in the toilet, really. I've come to accept incessant grammatical and spelling errors in summaries. But this is just lazy sloppy work. Please make a *summary* that is short, clear and explains why I should read the rest of the article.

    Or, to put it in terms that even slashdot editor could understand: tl;dr;

    You actually read the article? I was going to say you must be new here, but a 5-digit id... you must have been on a break. I mean, c'mon, this is slashdot.

    The American Dream btw was not that anyone could become an elite power broker. It was that anyone can make their own destiny. There are a million millionaires in America that prove that one.

    Tush. Count the hits, ignore the misses. By that reasoning, there are several more million non-millionaires that disprove it.

    ... haven't we had enough movies about people with abnormal powers, abilities, facing villains with stereotype characters? Any chance of seeing someone normal pushed into making tough decisions?

    Sorry, wrong thread I know... but I've been there and done that for superheroes.

    Let them go to 'and places beyond' in their fancy shmancy 12 million lb. thrust rocket. It's far more cost effective and easy, to send probes and rovers to other places in this solar system. The real question is, 'Who will be first to manipulate the higgs field in such a way that will allow for light speed or near light speed travel'?

    Tut. Them is us. Who will be .. it's one of us. We're all humans here, when it comes to the effort to get into space. Terrans, if you like. We (outside the States) are as proud of what you folks (I assume you're in the US?) did in the 20th century as you are. We (the world) look forward to great things from all nations (including the US) in this 21st century. Let's all take pride in the Space exploits of this planet's inhabitants. That's our species, risking their lives.

    I have a simple comeback for this. I ask them to count to ten, on their fingers if they need help. So they go 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10, happy ? Then I ask them to count 10 more, and then go 11, 12... and I stop them "See, you started at 11, same thing with centuries and millenia, they start at 1". Unless you are a C programmer.

    Please. This 'when did the new millenium/century start' thing was dull the first time. I'm just thankful I'll miss it next time 'round.

    Dollars are paper, but their value is not nebulous. If Company A that you know nothing about gives you $10, it has the same value as if Company B gives you $10. Now, if they each give you "$10 worth" of their stock, that value is nebulous.

    Nebulous in a way. Give me $10 and I'll look at it for ten years, and it will be worth $10. Give me $10 of government stock (safest) and in ten years it'll be worth $10+compound interest at x% per year.

    That gives me a great idea. Send the Royal Family into space. That way if they don't come down it saves a fortune on the honours roll to the UK

    Actually, the honours system is one of the few aspects of the whole shebang I agree with. Family member pointed out once that it's a way of giving recognition to someone without any money changing hands. A quick knighthood or OBE (example: Jamie Oliver, say) - he goes to Buck house, presses the flesh, gets a 'job well done' by HRH and that's it. On the way out the door, he flashes the gong to the tabloids, gets the envious stares of others who want to wear the same decoration, and ... life goes on. We're all assuming that the gongs go to people that the country needs of course - but that's another issue.

    I have problems where some of the titled aristocracy get to run the country ... was it Tom Paine who said that a hereditary ruler was akin to a hereditary mathematician?

    BTW, same sort of thing in the States? 'Key of the city of New York', etc...?

    I don't think you 'own' Windows, other games, music CDs, the DVDs and BluRays you have in your collection, the books you read, etc etc. Not 'own' in the sense that you can run off copies and distribute them yourself, pocketing the cash. With those products you have a 'licence to use'. Steam is the same.

    From your post, (I will never purchase another game via Steam), it sounds like you had a bad experience with Steam. What was it?

    In American English, one says and writes "oriented". In British English, the word "orientated" is used for the same purpose. Something I had to learn when I left the USA.

    Different thing. The same as you, I don't believe we've ever had alien visitors (insufficient evidence, etc etc). BUT ... I still run Boinc SETI on my home PCs. Because ..they're out there somewhere. It's a huge universe (Oblig XKCD ) and it's just a matter of time.

    One thought - it's TV and radio electromagnetic waves that 'they' will pick up from us first, so that's probably what we'll pick up from them first, as well. Alien TV programs... "I Love Kodos"?

    It seems that reality tv shows are the cheapest programming you can make.

    "Actors" that are just amazed they are on television and if you tell them they will get paid even half as much again as their current yearly salary they start humping the programming directors leg.

    Meanwhile, the big, classically trained in NYC, celebrity actors bitch about the wrong color M&Ms in their custom trailers and just when does their salary go to 1 million dollars per episode.

    No big loss to me. It's not like I was that into television in the first place. I'll miss the sci-fi shows and documentaries, but that will just make want to watch the documentaries on Netflix even more.
