i refer you to All the Shah's Men by Stephen Kinzer.
it's a well-researched history of the 1953 coup staged in Iran by the CIA on the behalf of British Petroleum.
the facts it presents are not controversial; they're official record.
and they include the long-term and regular recruiting of people for the specific job of joining opposition protests and throwing stones, smashing windows and generally fucking up peaceful protests which the CIA wanted to associate with violent extremists. all of this is well-documented. that was 54 years ago, and the coup was magnificently successful. - do you really imagine The Man is now above such methods ?
i've been scoffed at for a few years now for my layperson's mistrust of the Copenhagen Interpretation, and i'd love to have some weightier opinions to back me up. and who doesn't want to get rid of dark energy/matter and hyperinflation ? they reek of jerry-rigged fixes to a fundamentally flawed design.
i dunno about equipotential electric field curves.
i think it's far more likely the things in the video are just being batted about by random air currents.
the cameraman for example is obviously running all over the place,
and i'd be surprised if a flip-flops-okay 'lab' didn't have several windows open.
if you've got a clear view of the horizon (ie, the horizon is a long way away from you)
i'd still give it a shot tonight (sunday) even if you're a north-hemispherer.
we saw it from San Francisco on saturday just fine.
sun sets around 5.14, comet becomes visible around 5.25.
a couple years ago that video of the vibrating oobleck inspired me to duplicate it,
but i didn't have a handy-dandy oscillating table.
so i went out to the thrift store and bought a couple woofers for like $5,
laid 'em on the floor facing up, put some saran-wrap on them,
and poured in the oobleck.
then hooked a moderately powerful amp up to a simple tone-generating app in the computer, and that was it!
got some pretty decent creeping growing fingers.
uh.. you plug the laptop and the ipod into the same wall outlet now, don't you ?
think of this as just removing the cord which goes between the wall and whatever device.
of course, with this, now you have to put the device right at the outlet, which sorta blows. eg, you couldn't have a cordless lamp getting power while standing on a plain antique table.
ps, differentiate.
i bought a membership to MoM (hah, get it?) but unfortunately haven't really played it at all. these days, the only game i play other than to just Check It Out is nethack.
another notable is Minions of Mirth. It's a respectable MMORPG written by one programmer in one year. While it's not open-source, you can host your own servers, develop mods, and he's done a nice job of publishing details about the back-end.
absolutely.
"who pays who ?" is grammatically inexcusable unless it's a reference to "who made who ?" [sic], which doesn't really seem to be implied by the summary, so, uh, shame on you, slashdot!
Seems like a great first step towards being able to generate paintings in the style of particular artists.
Neat!
Are these artist profile parameters combinable, one wonders.
that's a really good idea!
i came *this* close to getting one of those USB numeric keypads solely for nethacking on the laptop.
if you've got internet when the YASD desire strikes,
don't forget you can always telnet://nethack.alt.org
i believe smalltalk amongst other languages has a somewhate native "rational" datatype,
ie a pair of integers.
sacraficing one bit won't work to indicate "repeating", btw.
it works for 1/3, but it doesn't work for 2/7 : 0.285714285714285714...
huh.
i'm sure you're right.
there are pretty/almost clear blue flashes in the animated.gif tho;
i wonder if it's some other artifact of the alpha skittering across the CCD.
i may be misreading the results,
but "If you look closely you will be able to see the white flashes that are one pixel in size, as well as faint blue streaks" does indeed sound/look an awful lot like Cherenkov Radation! Which normally you don't get to see for less than a hundred thousand clams, at the least.
"begs the question" means "raises the question with the predication that the question is already answered", and as such, this is a totally valid use.

so cumbersome!
also, re the second form, consider the algebra teacher saying "two to the power of the quantity n minus one plus x".
when actually speaking this stuff,
i and many folks i know try to suggest parenthesis by using small pauses;
eg "two to the... n minus one" or "two to the n... minus one".
not rigorous obviously, but it tends to work pretty well when folks have followed the mathematical context at least a little bit.
and of course gesturing wildly to indicate parens and brackets is no end of help.
It's pretty fun in person,
i love sitting around the living room watching roomies beat each other up or whatever on the screen.
We even watch each other play nethack, altho sometimes that's less spectating than "Agile" gameplay.
But i grant you, a video feed- less appealing.
Taking in arguments about the actual $/kWh cost to consumers along with notions of environmental foresight, it seems clear to me that technology like this should be subsidized.
Plus wide adoption will naturally increase the efficiency of the technology, so the cost-to-subsidize will decrease over the years.
i agree.
i felt like i'd sat down at a bar next to the wrong guy and now had to listen to him drunkenly explaining this amazing science factoid. which is frustrating because it's intersting stuff and he seems to suggest that something new came out of this amazing science party, but he doesn't really back it up.

this thread has filled me with a mighty thirst for the simple complex pleasures of nethack.alt.org.
this is totally interesting. wow! omg!
interesting; thanks.

way to go ! anyone know what 'biometric' stuff might be in there 'sides photo ? any burn-marks from the microwave ?

this is well-written and cogent.

heh. yes, but i thought that "a plural lens" sounded better than "some plural lenses". either way.
