Funny, I still can get laptops with optical drives, and desktops with floppy drives and parallel ports. Where have others actually followed Apple?

You are missing that there are hundreds of Android manufacturers. You are asserting that none of them will have a headphone port. That is moronic in the extreme. You are dictating that it isn't needed, just like SD cards, which many phones still have.

The only way to get a desktop with a floppy drive is to build it yourself. Same with a parallel port. And a laptop with a parallel port? Not!

Laptops with optical drives are likely still available; but the options are getting very much less year after year.

Same thing with phones with analog headphone jacks. You will likely be able to find A phone or three with a 3.5 mm Jack for the next few years; but if Apple and Samsung both ditch that port, all the flagship models for all OEMs, regardless of platform, will soon follow suit. So after that, if you feel you MUST have that Jack, you'll more than likely be relegated to an old model, or some sketchy off-brand phone. None of the "good" phones will have it. If you call that "choice", then ok...

  3. Almost everyone that switches from Android to an iPhone is gonna be extremely disappointed with the poor quality of the iPhone hardware, OS, and apps! Oh, and having to pay extra to use standard headphones or ear buds, and not being able to listen to anything with headphones or earbuds while charging! (Cr)apple products are vastly overpriced junk! Somehow (Crapple has convinced iDiots that owning iCrap makes you cool. Its not what you own that makes you cool, but who you are! Owning iCrap only makes you look stupid to the rest of us!

You AC Apple Haters are all alike. If you had an argument that was supportable by facts, you would just go ahead and make it. You wouldn't have to resort to juvenile devices such as "Crapple" and "iDiots" in a vain attempt to get whatever point you think you have, across.

Poor quality hardware? iPhones have the fastest processors. Period.

iPhones have the safest App Source. Or do enjoy the Android Exploit du Jour?

The iPhone without a 3.5mm Jack COMES WITH a FREE adapter. No need to "pay extra" to use "standard" (analog) headphones/earbuds.

For the iPhone 7, Several dual-port adapter/cables are available for as little as $11, for those who feel the need to listen to music CONTINUOUSLY for more than the 40 hours (60 for the 7 Plus) that it can play music on batteries.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 actually costs MORE than an equivalent storage iPhone 7 PLUS.

Who is "The rest of us", since likely hundreds-of-thousands of Slashdotters actually OWN (and even enjoy!) one of more Apple products?

Now that, my boy, is how you make an argument. With FACTS. Must I post LINKS to all of those points? Because, unlike you, I CAN.

  5. i'd be really surprised if Apple outsourced their firmware development to Foxconn without auditing the shit out of it. they're pretty obsessive about that.

Foxconn are the ones that build the hardware and install the software, they wanted to slip in a backdoor to idevices they are in the prime position to do it. But of course no Chinese company would ever do that to an American company.

So, do you think that an installation via JTAG bypasses code-signing? The installation probably does; but I would doubt the signature check would be bypassed upon execution.

  6. Foxconn's other devices? The ones with the fruity logo?

Nope. Apple does their own Firmware for every single thing they design.

  8. You somehow managed to forget, "Certain to be told exactly how you may or may not use their device (Apple)".

    You're welcome!

I didn't "Manage to forget". What you suggest is simply not true.

ANYONE is completely free to build ANYTHING in iOS FOR THEMSELF. No "App Store" Rules. No "Approval" Process. No Licensing. Period. Just whip yourself up some Swift, ObjC, Javascript, or whatever code, and VOILA! That has ALWAYS been the case, BTW.

Oh, you say you can't code? Well, sucks to be you. Because if that's the case, you will ALWAYS be beholden to SOMEONE who decides what you can, and cannot, do with your device. No matter what platform.

And besides, any ad-hoc group of people who want to exchange "private" Apps can do so (what fandroids refer to as "Sideloading"). Been available for a few YEARS now. Completely "Legal" according to Apple. In fact, they are the ones that enabled the ability to do so. Do try to keep up. Again: No App Store. No Approval Process. No Rules. No License Fee. The fact that most people in the U.S. don't take advantage of such FREEDOM says to me that there is actually only a VERY small percentage of users that need/want to do that.

But as you can see, the ability that you alluded to not existing, does in fact exist, and with no jailbreaks required. In fact, there is also a tool called "Cydia Impactor" that alludes to do this "Sideloading" without Jailbreaking, and without requiring XCode.

    So, STFU.

  9. And pray tell what evidence do you have that Samsung are hiding something, other than an insinuation and a lofty "I suggest..."?

Please don't try to insult our intelligence like that. You just make yourself look very partisan and very stupid.

Actually, I freely admit that I don't know for a fact that they know more than they are letting-on. But this news story certainly suggests something somewhat provocative in that regard... That's what I was thinking-of when I wrote that post.

they pretty much already did that.

first they did a recall, tried to fix it and when that didn't work they just axed the whole product and recalled and refunded(with extra) everyone.

I think they messed up soc placement in regards of the thin, large, battery, since they are unable to fix it without making a new product.

Bullshit. This is a LOT more than just unfortunate SoC placement. If that were the case (no pun), preliminary testing would have uncovered the flaw and they would have rev-ed the PCB layout to move the SoC around to a better place.

Unless you are suggesting (as I am) that Samsung just yanks any POS that will boot straight offa the R&D lab-bench and submits it for standards-testing and rollout...

The recent figure of what was it, 53 models in one year, comes to mind. How much attention to detail do you think any one of those received? In that same time period, Apple likely released one or two very closely-related models. Three at the absolute max in any year.

I don't care how many R&D engineers you have. There is a lot more to releasing a reliable product than throwing an SoC and a bunch of its friends onto a PCB and submitting it for standards-testing. But Samsung doesn't seem to think so.

And before you bring up "Antennagate", or "Bendgate" or anything like that, I will; because those both show how, even with a company as detail-obsessed as Apple, stuff happens. But I can guarantee that it is a lot more likely to happen with a company like Samsung, that treats its products like a welfare-mother treats her children: If Child Protection takes one of my kids, I can always make another... (And yes, that is actually a good analogy).

  13. There shouldn't be coercion involved to get you to buy another of their devices.

They are just scared to death that people will "defect" to the iPhone. Because if they do, they will never look back.

Face it. Samsung is already the top-end of the Android world. So if people decide on another Android device this time around, like Huawei, they'll likely be back to Samsung when they realize that the other brand is shit.

But if most people switch from Samsung to Apple, they will never buy another Android phone again.

That's not trolling or flamebait (although I am SURE it will be modded as such), that's market research.

  14. Motorola is owned by Lenovo.

I don't know that they are doing so well, and Motorola sounds like an easy thing for them to divest themselves of when it becomes (even more) of a money-sink.

  15. What a great bunch of options!

Sounds like, by your own logic, there is only one that doesn't end up with you owning a phone that is either:

Likely to be orphaned by a company going belly-up (Motorola, Blackberry).

Likely to be orphaned by a company with the attention-span of a goldfish (Google).

Likely to blow your dick off (your words) (Samsung).

Likely to be a serious compromise by a company that specializes mostly in "free" phones (LG).

Hmmm. By your own logic, who does that leave? And what is the only thing you can come up against that phone? The paranoid ramblings of some fandroids on Slashdot?

  16. I would take that if I had a Note 7 to exchange. I haven't heard of any fiery Galaxy S7 Edges for example.

Well, since it was Samsung that expanded the Recall, I would suggest that they might know a little something (else) they haven't exactly made public...

Are you going to try and claim now that somehow Apple is exempt from battery issues and never has bad batteries?

EVERY OEM has the occasional Li-ion battery runaway. iPhones are no exception.

The difference here is the "clustering" of MANY runaway events, ALL involving the same make/model, and which PERSISTED even AFTER said OEM said they "fixed" the problem with "exchanged" units.

    Those are undeniably BIG differences.

All of I have to say to that is "Charging is not supported with this accessory."

You can't charge with third party chargers in iOS because the OS itself blocks them.

Well, if that is true, maybe that is a Good Thing. Seriously. Li-ion batteries are MUCH more persnickety about charging than your father's Nickle-based ones. So, perhaps maybe, just maybe, Apple didn't want to expose their customer-base to that danger. But what do I know? I'm just an embedded systems designer with about 4 decades of paid hardware & software design/development experience...

Oh, and BTW, the car charger that gets my iPhone 6 Plus so hot is a THIRD-PARTY charger. This demonstrates two things: iOS DEMONSTRABLY does NOT "block" at least SOME Third-Party chargers; and Third Party Chargers generally SUCK.

The song with the Backwards lyrics was "Silly Boys", on their third album, "Sir Army Suit". 25. I don't really understand the purpose of the 'leak' unless it is to show that some people who work with Hillary Clinton have some pretty wacky beliefs. Has anyone been paying attention to politics for the last few decades? This is not startling in any way. Finding evidence of a rational person, without wacky beliefs, involved in politics would be a world shattering revelation.

I can tell you what this is all about:

For whatever you think about the Clintons, they (both Bill and Hillary) do seem genuinely interested in the topic of UFOs. It is Bill Clinton, as President, that pressured the Air Force and Joint Chiefs and Congress and anyone he could pressure to come clean about Roswell, which prompted the Gummint to "declassify" the Project Mogul documents, and (supposedly) re-examine the Roswell crash "afresh".

So, I assume that the guy from Blink 182 knew that, and thought he would try and get some "access" to what he calculated was a "sympathetic ear" while he had an email address for someone close to Hillary.
