  1. Thanks! That's exactly the kind of person that I am not. I don't really use any apps other than a browser, file manager, etc... I don't do social media (don't have any accounts) and I'd like to be able to use it as a phone and a web browser. I might like to check my home security (I can do that through a browser) and use VNC to connect to a home computer - which can also be done through a browser, if I put some effort into it. I can also just get the TightVNC client source and see if it compiles. I don't think the phones have the same CPU so I'd have to compile it, I'm guessing. That shouldn't be too tough. It's not even a requirement, just a nice feature.

Thanks, again. I'll start taking a look at them a little more. US Cellular's pretty cool so all I need to do is find a store and I'll be able to switch. LOL Make sure you call Microsoft and tell them you want a commission. That's good enough for me to try it, at least. I'm *that* tired of Android and I don't feel like trying to go to the Apple ecosystem - I'm not sure how well those interact with Linux. Then again, I don't do a whole lot of interaction as it stands - like transferring files, using it as a hotspot, etc...

  2. Well, duh, you just have to take your phone to Europe. ;-) It might be cheaper than an iPhone.

Actually, my daughter's an iHead. She's got an iPhone. I've not played with the latest one, that she has, but the last one was kind of spiffy. She's also insane. The minute a new model drops, she buys it. She then sells her old one. I'm not certain but I do believe she goes for the one with the most memory and, as said, they seem to be, legitimately, good.

  3. Thoughts on the Windows phone? I'm seriously considering switching and the Ubuntu phone doesn't appear like it's an option/carrier supported. Four months into my new phone and nary one update except for the one that came down the pipes when I first got it. I hear good things about the Windows 10 phone but I hear those from people whom I'd not classify as technical in nature. Getting input from someone with a grasp of tech and the variable benefits and negatives would be nice - if you have time and are so inclined.

I like Linux. I use it. I'm using Lubuntu at the moment but that changes kind of often. Hmm... I have been playing with BSD via a virtual machine lately. I don't know a whole lot about the kernel. I wonder if it's more or less monolithic. Of course, well, the BDSs don't really have a single kernel, I don't believe. I think they're all based on the same kernel from back in the mid 90s.

Wikipedia classifies it (the BSD) as a monolithic kernel. When reading about the microkernel there's a wiki page on Tanenbaum's debate with Torvalds. It's interesting reading though I'm still trying to grasp what makes a nanokernel different and what, exactly, makes one qualify for hybrid status. Ah well... It's good to learn new things.

'Snot my cup of tea, I'm not a good programmer, and I'm far too lazy but I expect you guys could do this. I just wonder how one gets the magic sauce which is popularity. I'd assumed (I've never played it) that it was just another mindless click game like the one about birds. If I am mistaken that doesn't really change much, to me. How the hell is the market that large? Who the hell is paying for these games or is it ads and user information that are the real value?

I would not have thought, ten years ago, that the mobile market would have this much capital involved. Someone just won the lottery which is kind of cool, I'm still surprised, however.

I shall lord my power over them!!! They're gonna need an awful lot of mod points. I don't actually think they can damage my karma - even with a concerted effort. But, it is I who controls the situation and I demand they try.

They might as well waste the points on me. I don't actually mind. 'Snot like I was doing anything important, or anything. Truth be told, it's kind of an ego boost. I've never managed to attract a stalker - and I've been visiting BBS, specifically the forums, since the 1980s. They also seem to think that I'm not being truthful, which is kind of amusing. It's the internet - it's the one place you can be completely honest and not really get too excited about people who dislike you or your opinion.

I do actually have a story about axes (which is what I think irks them the most - the idea that someone's able to enjoy life and is willing to share it without a sense of importance and even fully disclosing their faults and frailties) but I think I'll save it for another day. The short version is that you can, legally, go wild boar hunting in Florida with pretty much any weapon you want. And that boars don't die easily.

Ah well, this will give them something more to moderate down. I mean, hell, they can go for off-topic and at least be legitimate. 'Snot like I don't have karma to spare.

Those are not desktops. Which is why I quantified it. If the number in use for a task is a mark of a better product than grains of sand would be better than food. The Ford Focus would be better than a BMW. Android 4.2 would be better than 5.0. PHB would be better than competent people.

There are lots of arguments to be made that say Linux is better - I might even agree with them. But using the number of them in use as a metric is not a very good deterministic approach for quality. There are more ants than there are people. Ants must be better... :/ Better at what?

No, the number of devices in use don't actually mean the OS is any better. That's like saying that Windows is better on the desktop (Windows also has a kernel) simply because more people use it there. That's like saying Ubuntu is better on the server because more people use it than use Red Hat. It might be truly better but the number of installs isn't the metric to determine that. It's not even a useful metric. If that's the only metric they've got (and it shouldn't be - I can come up with a few just sitting here) then they're really gonna need to go back to square one and try it again.

I use Linux but that's because it's handy and has a huge ecosystem. I do have MINIX in a VM but, honestly, I've not found a real use for it, for me. I do think the idea, the microkernel, is sound and that it should make a more secure and stable system. There's a loss in speed but we've pretty speedy hardware now. He may win that argument in numbers still. Doubtful but, then again, do the numbers really tell you which is better? Is a Ford Focus better than a BMW 6-series?

That said, I've yet to see one anon suggesting violence against any of these people. They might be giggling, expecting someone to engage in violence but they're not suggesting it - no inciting there at all.

If I say that AC is a bacon-hater who uses Windows ME and then list your address, it's still not inciting violence. Hell, even if I say I think you should die, it's not inciting violence. If I say that someone should go kill the bacon-hating, ME using, AC who lives at such-and-such address then, yes, that's inciting. If I say that I wish someone in the audience would kill you then that, too, is inciting violence.
