The newest BIOS version should work and give you a menu option to mess with the EC firmware. The process is pretty scary (it'll deep power cycle itself without warning) but it's straightforward. I've been using all 4 cores of my X3 for half a year now for running Folding@Home and at stock speeds it's never had a single problem.
If you run your home network like a police state, its users will come to treat you as head of a police state. If your kids are already so screwed up that this is the only remaining option, then you need to be restrained yourself.
Kill GTK+ off? Maybe when Qt has more than one decent theme that doesn't require installing half of KDE, or when Qt themes don't require a compiler to create. Until then, get lost.

IIRC, Flash is "open" in the sense that Microsoft's OOXML is "open". Or at least that was the reason I've seen for why gnash/swfdec are so far behind the curve.
