When RIAA goes after pirates who copy material for the sole purpose of reselling that material, they have every right to go after them. They are undeniably taking one paying consumer away from the rightful retailers.
People who trade music to not instantly equate with someone who would have otherwise purchased the music. That's where RIAA seems to get stuck - they assume that if you're not constantly handing over your money (or your parents money) you must be a thief.
By RIAAs thinking, am I a thief for listening to songs I don't "own" on the radio? What if I hear a song I don't own at a friend's house? Are these copyright infringements? Isn't there some concern that no money left my pocket and went into RIAA's coffers? They do have a HUGE team of lawyers they have to pay, after all...
What we really see here is a greedy corporation that is only concerned with the quickest buck. Since modern music has such limited sales potential, they need to look at other revenue streams. Prosecuting international pirates just isn't cost effective - so, they aim for the "easy targets" (thanks to our legislation and dead constitution), and go for the college & high school kids.
A similar thought hit me one day when we ran into a duplicate license problem with Macromedia Dreamweaver (we had enough licenses, just used one twice).
Think about it - they PAID someone to write code to make your software NOT WORK. Hmmm. Now, where did they get the money to pay this guy? Oh, from YOU!
Now, think what software companies could do if they could get beyond all this paranoia and concentrated just on MAKING THE SOFTWARE WORK.
... and your e-mail administrator can read your e-mail...... and your network administrator can see what web sites you're visiting...... and your ISP can watch your internet traffic...... and the NSA can listen to your phone...
So, the real trick is just to live a life so borring none of these people will care to spy on you. Not all that hard, really. Considering you're on/. - you're probably doing okay.
this is just my "take" on this, and is little more than a guess, but...
When MS or Mac plans to come out with a new system, they typically tweak the GUI appearance enough to make the consumer feel that buying the new system was a worthwhile investment. These are generally done as new calls to the underlying system, or maybe a new set of widgets that weren't available before. Long before the new system ships, MS/Mac will share these new tweaks with other software vendors, either at a cost or for free depending on the relationship. This allows vendors like Adobe (as an example) to have software ready to take advantage of these features as soon as the new system comes out, which is good for both the software and OS vendors.
But open source projects don't have the same luxuries. First, they don't have the right consumer base to convince MS/Mac to give early releases of their OS's for free. Second, the open source developer is NOT going to pay big bucks for an early release developer license. Lastly, while mosts GUI tweaks are "cool", most offer no new functionality - I suspect many developers simply don't bother to rework/rebuild their apps only to take advantage of new GUI tweaks, preferring to wait until they can add new features to the app as well.
But see, that's the point - we HAVE tried to just be nice to each other, and no matter what, we keep getting pissed at each other, and want to flatten each other's cities, steal each other's resources, and piss in each other's wells.
So, while I don't agree with you, go ahead and look for an answer besides God. But there's over 7,000 years of human history saying "let's just be good people, and be nice to eachother" is a philosophy that sounds good, but doesn't work.
Now, back to the topic at hand - I don't see anything wrong with an open debate, but no matter what, it's only an opinion and speculation! I won't fully believe either side until they produce some witnesses!
Hey, I'm all for OpenSSH - use it every day on almost any PC I touch, but "ready for enterprise" can have more meanings than just how secure/usable a product is.
What may be missing from OpenSSH (and I'm not claiming to be an expert - just a user) is an enterprise manager... which it sounds like the Commercial SSH version may offer.
I'm sure there's a way to enterprise-manage ssh other than passing keys around. But it doesn't seem to come out-of-the-box with OpenSSH just yet.
I'm glad I searched for "opt" before making my post, and looking unoriginal!
My compliments to the poster!
And while I am not one to endorse violence as a solution, I guess the world really owes this guy a great deal of thanks. Since we don't know his e-mail address, how about we just start e-mailing thanks to everyone...
Actually, they are sending porn to an e-mail address, not to children specifically. I actually can control the access spammers have to my children, unlike in school.
Marketing in schools - can you deny they are targeting kids specifically?
And why wouldn't I hate corporations? They've ignored public responsibility, denounced the public charters that once were REQUIRED to start a corporation, and can't even be fiscal responsible to shareholders, employees, or community. Surely, it's in my own best interest as a mere citizen to hate corporations.
I did like the "moonmaiden" reference... but I believe the line was "Dukakas-hugging" - "tree-hugging" is just too blase for the Simpsons.
While I do think it's a good start, I question the other ways kids are NOT protected... namely in the educational institutions.
We allow advertising for Snickers, M&Ms, Coke & Pepsi all over our high and junior high schools, and allow Universities (like the former U of Minnesota - now a research facility instead of a school) to sell students personal information to any bank or credit card company we choose.
Spam is hardly a threat compared to corporate "education".
And all this time, I got my news from the BBC only because news is their primary goal - not selling ad space (unlike CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, oh, hell - every "American" news source).
Here's an idea - let's combine the educational institutions with the correctional institutions! After all, what college student doesn't copy music, or movies, or drink under age, etc?
Why do we spend our tax dollars strong-arming our kids? Why do we do NOTHING about international piracy, especially in China?!? Oh, because it's so much easier to go after our own citizens. We would not want to hamper the rights of the international pirates, only our own citizens.
Does any part of our government represent the US Citizen any more?
I live in a republican district, in a democratic state. If I vote for one of those parties, my vote is just canceled out!
But, by voting for a third party, my vote actually does get counted - maybe not for the president himself (only a select few actually get to vote for the president, after all), but for my party.
Plus (and best of all), I get to vote for a candidate I actually agree with, instead of voting against the candidate I hate the most.
Will my candidate win? No. The corporations that purchased Kerry & Bush will win.
There is a constitutional way to solve this - http://www.fairvote.org/irv/ (or, see http://www.fairvote.org/irv/muppets/ for an explaination with more fur).
RIAA deems radio signals are copyrighted. Closes down SETI for downloading signals. Also sues every person who is/was using SETI software on their machine, as well as every computer manufacturer in the country.
Microsoft avoids lawsuit by bundling Jason Timberlake box set with purchase of Windows.
If congress and the president represent business, and the supreme court represents the president, then who represents the People?
So if your software or hardware can copy music (music I would NOT purchase anyway, based on the rotten behavior of the american music industry), you can be liable for the theft of music.
But if you manufacture a weapon that can KILL PEOPLE,... oh, gee! How can we hold you responsible - you're just doing your job!
So, what does this tell you this government's first priority is? It surely isn't "We the People" anymore.
I suppose it must be theft of property, and not just a downturn in the marketplace - since there are no downturns in the marketplace or employment when our supreme leader BushDick is in charge!
My son and wife can't find a job, I work for the Gub'mint (or is it G'Dubmint?) and am stuck using free software like Mozilla Firefox and Linux (actually, that's a good thing).
This actually reminds me of RIAAs complaint a few years back that kazaa, napster and P2P were ruining album sales. Huh, I would have thought it was the crappy music, but whatever. (I got sick of their whining, and haven't bought a CD since - why support that crap?).
In the past, I've taught classes on managing web servers, but no one is signing up anymore - someone must be giving out free instruction online!!! Quick! We must get all the information off the internet - teachers' careers are being ruined! Before our educational institutions all close, the internet must be destroyed! (or at least start charging customers $1/per character they download! at least I can still make a buck).
Back to reality, I'm left with one question. Is the dept. of homeland security passing out paranoid pills in DC?

At work we're seeing a larger number of motherboards where the USB suddenly fails. It only seems to happen to those using drives or palm sync devices.
If the enterprise uses flash drives more, will we end up replacing more motherboards as well?
So if you run a company and steal from people (Ken Lay), if you die your heirs (with their stolen money) are exempt.
If, on the other hand, you're just a person, and you do something wrong in the eyes of the music industry, the punishment is due your children.
Does anyone else see a HUGE problem with the justice system in this county?
We the people have no control. God Money has spoken.

Maybe google could build a search engine for all schools and libraries that censors out any links to forbidden (blocked) material!
Did anybody actually read the constitution and bill of rights when it was still around?
Nice sig! I thought I was the only SoM fan!

Yes, crazy cats, it's now hip to be geeky. I think that's just groovey, daddy-o!
Free - but only for one year. Then you need to find budget.

I'm in the wrong damn country!
Why am I not supprised to find a Bush on that school's home page?
Do you suppose they teach about the freedom of speech at this school?
It's probably just a facility to train Bush Youth. Sieg Heil!

It would be so cool if I could get a scratch-proof cellphone face, or glasses, or camera lense...
There are so many places this could be useful, CDs barely scratch the surface (sorry, I couldn't resist).
