    Not to say the Republicans would be any better, but...

    Maybe it's an opportunity- create a zillion fake receipts for expenses etc. The state would have no chance or way to challenge their legitimacy. PROFIT!

    * They have family who generally have had bad experiences when they learned math.
    * They have teachers in their early years without the interest, ability, or confidence to teach math

    The message comes across loud and and clear - math is hard/confusing/not for mere mortals.

    See sports where there is an opportunity to physically hurt someone - American Football, Football, Australian Rules (Geez mate, he must have run 50 meters to get in on that fight), Rugby, Lacrosse etc. How many of those sports are stuffed to the gills with psycopaths?

    Weather forecasting hasn't got better, at all.

    My Gran, rest her soul, was always far better at weather than any bloody meteorologist and that over her life of 95 years. Was she perfect? No, but a lot more use than any bloody meteorologist.

    Add computers and satellites and they suddenly think they're all bloody geniuses.I'd actually say they're worse or the same. Probably get better results reading entrails.

    Write down a list of the outcomes you expect your employee to produce. Drawings? Photo-Editing? Spreadsheets? Documents? Database creation/management?

    That tells you what they are doing for you. Then you can work out what software is required to do said tasks.

    Given the software being determined, then you can look up the best spec's for the computer system they need - Processor, RAM, Drive space, GPU, Printer etc.

    That tells you the type - Windows, Mac, Linux, whatever.

    Then you can determine the budget, and ask them to choose.

    It's usually more productive to just not react to idiots. After all, just when you thought the world had reached peak idiot and that you've solved that problem, you invariably find out you are wrong with the world throwing up an even greater idiot.

    I wonder if you asked her about anything Math related? Probably not.

    Context is all. Most people have limited areas of expertise. Partly because they've not that much exposure to life outside a limited sphere, and partly because lots of stuff in the world simply doesn't interest them that much.

    I freely admit to not knowing how to fix much on a modern car, even though I'm a proper (not software) engineer.
