I'm wondering the same. MP3 for example is really old format that was tailored to squeeze sound to the networks back then. Roughly speaking lossy compression is mostly about fitting music to portable devices or listening to a stream of music over the net. The usage is turning to mobile environments, but at the same time more and more people are using the services. Besides DVD's can't hold losslessly compressed surround sound track, and blu-rays are also a transitory media.
We are moving away from physical environments and it's now a really fragmented space where everyone's needs have to be taken care of. Many applications don't actually ever need to be lossless; think about accessibility, sound through small speakers and speech recording for example. Having lossless sound everywhere would be overkill, but having a clear speech sound could be a life saver.
Having losslessly compressed music collection is future proof. I'd hate to buy the same tracks over and over. If I get all the future versions too of the same track for the same price I'd think about actually buying mp3's or aac's.
It's interesting if Anonymous is actually taking that stance about the docs. I understood they were being sarcastic. The documents should be published in their entirety or Anonymous would appear to support the militarist and secretive paradigm they claim to oppose.
The blockade is the result of what the Palestinians have done. They have nobody to blame but themselves.
Most of the voters back then didn't vote for Hamas or for violence. Because of the minority of voters the funds of the Palestinian government were frozen and its functions ceased. The issue should not be polarized, because that plays in the hands of islamist extremists and the extremists in Israeli government.
The aim of the blockade was to diminish the power of islamist factions. It has failed. Now that Israel is slowly easing the blockade it realizes that. Blockade effectively created Hamas monopoly, because all of the imports/exports was done via smuggling.
If the aim was to punish the Gazans the blockade has been highly succesful.
Natural reality and human reality are altogether different things.
We are able to shape our reality and its content. If we embark on a journey to find out absolute values we'll soon have a sketch of the universal declaration of human rights. I'm not saying that's something that is best, but humanistic values form the foundation of communicating at a common and equal level. The less there is ignorance the better, and the ignorant are not worse people.
False. Israel allows non-military goods to enter Gaza, in large volumes. Egypt opened its border with Gaza quite some time ago
All Gaza exports are banned. Export businesses cannot function regardless what they think of the Palestinian leaderhsip. These businesses have very much co-operated with Israelis, who act (or better: have acted) as distributors and resellers.
Lately some exports have been allowed to flow out, but total blockade was effective for at least three years. The allowed exports have for example been flowers and tomatoes and other goods explicitly demanded by European governments.
In other words, the 'real moral high ground' is held by those who agree with you? Real great ideas you have there......
I don't think in nationalistic terms or accuse anyone of anything. We are all victims of the human reality. The ones who die for our "sins" are there in the focal point, often not even aware why there is fighting.
You might be interested to check out what they actually do. They are fully aware of the violent teachings, but the rule is that the hosts provide the main curriculum. What UNRWA people do outside the curriculum is for theirs to decide, and after school activities and camps are organized where students and participants are taught peace and coexistence, non-violent conflict resolving and the things Hamas is not providing.
The international instititutions in palestinian areas are struggling because of palestinian factions and Israeli politics.
Flotilla is a statement against the Gaza blockade AKA collective punishment on general civilian population. Hamas only slightly won Fatah in the elections, and Hamas got the votes of about 30% of the population. The gazans are suffering because of small number of islamists and their israeli counterparts, who wish to have the palestinian areas fully included in a Greater Israel.
Polarizing the issue leads the public astray, because the real issue are the palestinians who are exploited by multitude of parties to promote their selfish political agendas. Every single death of any nationality or religion of any of the sides is exhaustively politicized and used as a straw man to polarize the conflict even more.
If the human rights were universally applied Israel and palestinians would live in either two distinct nations or in one nation of Israel, which by definition would not be a Jewish state. Because of the insistence of having a distinct Jewish state which many say should encompass all palestinian areas too the palestinians are bound to suffer, and because the islamists are promoting their narrow minded ideology the palestinians (of which small number are actually Christians and Jewish) are bound to suffer too.
The conflict history is full of provocative acts by any of the sides and the real moral high ground is with jewish conscientous objectors and human rights activists as well as their arab counterparts. Sustaining the black&white distinctions is essential for promoting the violent nationalistic objectives of either side, and much of the global cheer is directed for or against the sides (which they both like) instead of directing the energy to protect the civilian populations against the exploitation.
The conflict is rotten from the core and almost everything in it is totally corrupted including the Flotillas to some extent. Somewhere on the road the civilians continue their suffering and play their part in the charade.
I use Windows with Parallels on OS X, and when I stick in a USB stick Parallels ask which OS should read it. It would be great if OS's in general had a preview capability where you could peek the insides of a stick and maybe even run code from it in a sandbox.
The gist of the article is the opening of North West passage by which the whale and the algae have passed from Northern Pacific to Northern Atlantic.
The ecosystems always adapt. Some species die out and others find a microscopic ecological niche - it's a natural process. At the moment species are becoming exinct en masse. Are the changes introduced by steady oscillating processes or abruptly as a planet wide catastrophe? The humanity is the unbalancing factor in the process - we are a sort of super predator that consumes available resources at an alarming pace.
Your question evades the real question about the anthropogenic changes on Earth. We are at the top of the food chain, so it's us who will eventually suffer from the disruptions below. The more gradual and easy the changes the more time we have for adaptation. So there's still a lot to learn.
Not really applicable considering civil liberties and tax income. The smokers should pay for their health services (this is especially valid in countries where health care is universal).
Instead smoking should be allowed only in tobacco clubs and places where people give their consent to inhaling tobacco smoke.
I think version numbering should be dropped completely from public view.
Software improves over time (hopefully) but the name (brand) remains the same. When updates are around it could be indicated to the user by telling that you are lagging so many days or being so many percent from complete. Being 100% complete would mean you'd have the latest 'version'. This would make the whole process feel like a game where you catch up with the others.
In Finland the same number would be 1254€ / person / year. (1806.35$, 1113.45 GPB). Basically everything is free for that sum, and you can always go to private health care services too as much as you wish (and get little compensation from the state too). It's also possible to insure yourself against all health care expenses, but that's something extra (practically all insurance companies offer some kind of version of it).
The total for healthcare in 2010 was 13,550 billion euros (7,6% of GDP), but state and counties pay about 48% of it (from taxes), so maybe the total in UK / citizen is less than you stated too. The biggest single contributor to the sum are companies and employers.
The total social expenses were 30,9% of GDP (54,95 billion euros) (healthcare, unemployment, housing, family/children, invalids, elderly etc).
More likely with enough GPU's they'll come up with perfect summaries.
Password hacking process could be used to create completely new content - even data like images. If you can make billions of attacks per second the amount of coherent information must eventually be high enough.
The difference between past and today is that we as a species are actively taking part in changing the living conditions for worse. Actually not all are so active, but mainly the few who are most hungry for resources.
To praise our ability to adapt in a situation like this is like giving a free pass to those who are creating the human catastrophy in the first place.
We sure can adapt to changing conditions, but most people in the world don't even know why they are suffering.
It's ironic though that in the end those who are most dependent on modern infrastructure and those who have been fed by factories their whole life will end up suffering most.
I don't there will be any overlaps. The more dishes the better (think SETI for example). FAST is contributing to the SKA project - scientists and engineers co-operate. The foundation of FAST design was crafted in co-operation with Arebico.
Too much resources - everything is made to order. Design and production takes time from innovation, and the result is layer upon layer of bureacracy. Besides it's too cozy - your life and future are not under immediate threat and there's too much money at hand.
It's amazing what dedicated DIY types can come up with.
These decisions put more pressure on the development of alternatives.
Besides by BP we have oil for 48 years, gas about 60 years and coal 118 years (down from over 200 years in 2000). By other estimates oil exports end in 20-30 years as the producers need it themselves. The estimates are based on current consumption, which only is going up - so the ends comes sooner.
Nuclear is by far the best choice in terms of energy density so it'd be the best choice to carry us to renewables. The shorter the nuclear phase the better however. The reason why public fears nuclear power is because of the nuclear companies' and industry's carelessness. So there's a lot to improve before trust is gained back (if ever).
But, but they have Ponies!

Did the group just try to breach thesun.co.uk for the occasion or did they have the opportunity for some time and now decided to use it?
It's just somewhat convenient, but nothing rules out pure chance.

I didn't say that we are equal.
My error was to use term moral high ground, I should have used some other expression.

That's desperate.
The user should try the other hand.

Iceland is currently drafting the new constitution on social media and especially on Facebook, and it has already gathered a lot of positive vibes from people around the world - http://mashable.com/2011/06/13/iceland-crowdsource-constitution/
After the devastating financial crisis the call for the people to participate must be revitalizing.
Governments can do very likeable things.
