I used to buy on demand movies all the time. FIOS put an end to that with their horrible interface.
That, and disabling fast forward. If I accidentally hit 'stop' it always forgets where I was in a program and acts like I'm going to sit through 40 minutes of a show just to get back to where I was. Yes NBC, I was going to watch one of your shows but I'm not gonna sit through the first episode 1.8 times just to watch the last 10 mins.
Good luck with your accreditations. I'd be willing to bet that there are a few 'pedigree' requirements with regard to your faculty. That said, if you make enough news with your 'alternative' you might be able to get people to not care.
Unfortunately for someone like me, any contract I work for the government usually has strict degree/education standards.
Welcome to the world of security clearances. Sure, they tell you, "Don't worry, as long as it's 'managed', it shouldn't disqualify you." Of course, anyone with half a brain realizes 'Yeah, it's going to bite you in the ass.'
Talk to anyone with a security clearance about the fear of going to a psychologist, and they will tell you it's a real thing.
(Not sure if I know of a good solution though. You do want the people to get treatment who need it, but you don't want to just ignore the guys who hear voices either)
Nothing so advanced, based on my experience in a government contracting office usually it boils down to this:
Legal requirements for maintaining paper copies 20+ years of 'this is how we do it' current state of 'but digitizing papers with signatures on them requires discipline'
Trust me, I'd LOVE to have the contracts in an electronic format. It's damned annoying that every time I want to know what changed from one contract mod to the next that I have to get the contracting office to produce a scanned (but not OCR'd) copy of the signed original and then play 'guess what one line changed' on a 200 page document.
Not that I think the paternalistic attitude of the person you responded to is helpful, but with respect to the Native Americans and Blacks in the United States, your timelines are almost flipped. Some of the most severe conflicts between the United States and the native populations occurred in the 1800s and lasted into the 20th century, while Blacks were enslaved long before the United States even existed.
The reason for Japan's military force being so small is because it's actually built into their constitution. When Japan lost WWII, there were significant fears that a disarmed Japan would be gobbled up by the Soviet Union or Communist China and become something like East Germany, (or as we now see... North Korea). So one of the goals was to keep them as a sovereign nation without a military of offensive capability. In order to keep them with teeth, the United States entered into treaties of mutual cooperation with respect to military defense.
In very simple terms: Japan has a very small military because the United States agreed to commit its military to defending Japan so that the other East Asian nations would not fear another Imperial Japan. Japan's resurgence as a strong economic force in the area would have been very frightening (and likely sabotaged) to the other nations of the area, it was their extreme focus on a very 'self defense only' military that has allowed them to interact with other nations without those other nations fearing for their own sovereignty.
China on the other hand, has a much smaller military because they had a bit of a buffer in terms of the Soviet Union (though there were always fears of a conflict there, which is probably why Mongolia still exists). However China was extremely isolationist, and was really fighting it's own civil war in terms of the cultural revolution. It didn't really have the economy to field a significant military until very recently. Remember, it wasn't even until Nixon that China really began engaging economically. It's economy is large now, but that's a recent thing, and military power like that comparable to the United States is not something that can be developed overnight. You can certainly take advantage of 'skipping' development of certain technologies, but there is a massive industrial base that must be created. The modern US military as it exists today is the product of nearly a century of focused buildup.
Another reason for China not having a massive military, is that it didn't really have massive overseas economic interests until recently. The US had shipping lanes to keep open, markets to keep stable, strategic allies to support, and until the 1990s, another superpower that it had to match militarily on a superpower scale. (Whether people agree that this is the appropriate use for a nation's military is tangential, I'm just trying to explain why the size differences exist)
This is a territorial battle between China and Japan, leave it to them to sort out or fight it out over on their own. Radical concept, I know, but just because something happens, it does not require you to sit your ass in the middle of it just because you can.
You aren't too familiar with the relationship between the US and Japan, are you?
Understand that one of the key things that the world wanted to avoid was having a defeated axis power rearm to defend itself, and then become belligerent again. So a lot of the treaties are designed such that 'You can keep a minimal military force, and just so you don't get bulldozed by the Soviet Union, we will enter into a very strong agreement to defend you with OUR military should you be attacked'.
I'll quit complaining when I can easily find a card which allows me to capture HDMI audio/video into my PC. I'm tired of having to rely on the functionality of HDMI (and HDCP) supporting boxes in order to manage my AV systems.
Seriously, if someone has a good suggestion for an HDMI input card...
If only there were some historical event which could be traced to improper treatment of bacterial infection, which could illustrate the threat of loss of antibiotics to human civilization and how it is so much worse than terrorism ever was or could be.
Oh wait, there is... the Black Death. I mean, when you can not figuratively, but literally attribute the threat of something to what caused the Black Death, why opt for something as mundane as terrorism.
(and for those who don't like the use of the term literally because the Black Death was caused by unsanitary living conditions and a misunderstanding of the transmission vectors, I only have to point you to the megadense cities and living conditions of today in India, China, Philippians, Sub-Saharan Africa. North America, and Europe might be able to avoid some of it, but the rest of the world? It could be very bad)
Even if a significant number of bacteria strains became totally anti-biotic immune we'd still not have anything close to the death tolls experienced 100 years ago.
No, it would probably be pretty similar. You wouldn't just have people dying of infection, you would have people dying because performing surgeries would become more dangerous than the condition you are trying to treat.
All those people that are currently alive thanks to transplants? Yeah, good luck surviving with a suppressed immune system to keep your transplants from being rejected.
Those people who were fortunate enough to have their cancer detected early? Well, we used to be able to surgically remove it, but now that's a much riskier proposition, so your only options now are 'observe for changes' and chemotherapy.... oh... yeah, chemotherapy will suppress your immune system and make you vulnerable to opportunistic infection. So, keep an eye on that tumor and try not to feed it so much.
At the moment, I'm more worried about the drug agents. I don't do drugs or associate with those who do, so the likelihood of being raided by the police in error is probably much greater than the risk from some drug cartel.
The problem isn't that if you don't treat scrapes or cuts with antibiotics that they will get infected and you will die.
The problem is that if a scrape or cut gets a serious infection you won't be able to treat it with antibiotics.
Obligatory car analogy: Car Airbags. If they all suddenly vanished, most people probably wouldn't have a problem, many car accidents don't trigger them. But when you need them, they will save your life.
And the systems to see the broken engines would be powered by what? Also, the emergency maneuvers have to be programmed in, based on human experience. Humans also have the advantage of being able to generalise and abstracting, able to adapt from one situation to fit into another situation more or less on the fly.
If you are to the point where your engines are broken, and you have completely lost power so much that the FCS is down, I'm not quite sure how much any pilot is going to be able to help you on a large aircraft. He couldn't even get on the intercom to tell people to 'smoke em if they got em' if it reached the level of bad you are describing.
It's not a matter of nice, doing something like that costs money. If it were as simple as dumping the code on the web, a lot might actually do that if just for the PR boost, but going through the code to make sure you didn't accidentally publish something that was later bought up by some patent/copyright troll is an expensive and risky prospect.
If you are asking people to take a risk for you, it's only fair that you compensate them for the risk.
I'm running one as a headless controller for an ASIC bitcoin miner. The low power draw and larger userbase was the draw for me. (Userbase means a lot for me, as I'm not as well versed in linux as I'd like to be)
I thought HE was dressed up as a Nazi, but it seems like it's just a standard domination thing (at least the 5s clip I watched). I mean, if you are going to hire a dominatrix, that kind of costume seems almost appropriate...
Now, his actions to get it pulled down are what I think are more reprehensible.
(This entire statement is based on that 5s clip. It's quite possible other parts of the video invalidate what I've said above)

Well. At least I don't need to bother signing up with spotify now. Thanks.
Yes, I'm quite sure you would be fine. Why, in 100 years time, we could probably find your body in remarkable condition.
Good luck with your accreditations. I'd be willing to bet that there are a few 'pedigree' requirements with regard to your faculty. That said, if you make enough news with your 'alternative' you might be able to get people to not care.

Section 22.2 of the SF-86
"Have you EVER been charged with an offense involving alcohol or drugs?"
Not only does it go for the 'EVER' instead of the past 7 years, but it also specifically changes the wording from convicted or sentenced to 'charged'.
