  1. Ha! I suspect it's SOP for huge multinationals.

  2. I am in exactly this situation right now.
"Excellent" might be a stretch, but I am a pretty good employee, and my direct boss knows it.
Our problem is that the senior management that makes the actual decisions don't give a fuck about me or anyone else with the exception of the shareholders, so when they refuse me the pay rise I want, and I get a new job that pays the money I want, they will have to find a new person to fill my job which will actually cost them more money.
They might decide to not refill my job of course, which would save them even more money and the customers I serve could just put up with worse service.
It probably wouldn't even make a difference to the bottom line because the market we work in is so concentrated that we only have one competitor.

    Yay capitalism.

  4. The future of fishing is no fish because of the fishing industry of course.

I live in the last major land mass to be colonised by humans, so it is still possible to catch a reasonable sized fish close to shore and fishing is a popular sport.

However, the fishing industry has done what it does everywhere and taken every fish it can possibly get hold of despite rules to prevent this happening.

A few years we were being sold the bull that "our" fishing industry was the "most sustainable" on the planet and we had nothing to worry about.
Of course fish stocks have plummeted anyway, and so now we are being bombarded with propaganda about "pledges" the industry is making to "be sustainable".

    It's all lies.

Oh, OK, it's about hipster idiots

a German company is reviving what may be the ultimate format: a new reel-to-reel tape machine...

    WTF? Why?

...is now making a comeback with audiophiles and artists including Lady Gaga..

Oh, hipsters and people who hate music then.

...will retail from about 9,500 euros...

Ha ha ha! Oh, hipsters who hate music and have too much money.

"When it comes to audio quality, nothing else in the analog world gets you closer to the experience of being right there in the recording studio than reel-to-reel tape."

It just gets better. I'm in favour of people like this taking money off idiots. I am wondering how the idiots got all that money in the first place though.
    Probably rich parents.

To be fair to Carter, Reagan used the Iran hostages to win the 1980 election.

I see Wikipedia labels it a conspiracy theory, but also notes former Reagan/Bush campaign staffer and White House analyst Barbara Honegger says it is true.

As a non- American I suspect we got a different view of Reagan (also George Bush II and your Mr. Trump) from the one you get.

The scariest thing is Trump might be stupid enough to try to launch military action against Iran...

He won't if the people of the US stop him. If there are enough protests and enough Senators think they will lose their seat if they support war then I don't think he will be allowed to start one.
In reality, there is so much money to be made from war the people who fund the politicians will ensure the right propaganda is used and public opinion will be all for another war.

... just like Bush before him he'll spend another trillion dollars on a war that should have never been started to begin with over weapons of mass destruction....

Did I mention that there's a lot of money to be made from war? Also, the US military learned a lot from Vietnam and is not about to make those mistakes again.
I don't mean the military mistakes. They will keep making those, I mean the propaganda and recruiting mistakes. There is no way the US military will ever go to war again with a force of draftees and without total control of the message sent home.

They are under the gun a bit over here, but are saying things like "we don't need a royal commission in New Zealand because there is no evidence we have done anything wrong", as if any royal commission would not be the one looking for evidence.

As an aside, has the Australian banking cartel stopped airing those weird "Australian banks are owned by Australians?" propaganda pieces on TV over there yet?
