Don't know if it's what I'd call FUD, exactly -- the very idea of patenting "associating a piece of data with multiple categories" is still absurd. And BTW it isn't the mods who post these things.
it IS the future of Linux desktop audio, whether you like it or not
As someone who does pro audio production (and has to reboot into OS X to do most it properly) that sounds like a threat to me. We've waited long enough, can we please just get back to OSS. There is no good reason not to at this point.
Additionally, while the judge in question deems it fine to let Leader Technologies look at Facebook's source (for a patent, no less!) in its entirety for a single feature, it would be "overboard to ask a patent holder to disclose all of their products that practice any claim of the patent-in-suit".
TFA goes on to state:
Facebook has requested that they must know, whether Leader offers products that practice claims of the patent-in-suit, however judge agreed with leader that it could be overboard to ask a patentee to disclose all of their products that practice any claim of the patent-in-suit.
Moreover, Facebook has not cited authority that could support requiring a patentee to prove, through detailed claim charts. Facebook is entitled to know every Leader product or service that Leader contends practices any of the asserted claims.
The court has ordered, within ten days of the following order, that Leader shall supplement its response to Facebook and disclose all products and services.
Leader shall provide Facebook with a list of source code modules with respect to which it seeks production of technical documents no later than September 22, 2009.
Facebook shall provide Leader with all such relevant technical documents no later than September 29, 2009 and Leader shall promptly complete its review of Facebooks Source code and technical documents to Facebook no later than October 15, 2009.
So it isn't quite as outrageous as TFS makes it appear.
That's largely true, but it isn't because Apple is more evil than MS -- it's because MS is less competent and more lazy than Apple. And I've owned Macs since 1987, but this iPhone behavior is pretty dreadful. Glad I don't have one...
Oh wow, now I've gone and looked at it and it's really cool! It's a collection of python scripts, so it should run on pretty much anything. And yes, keybndings (and most everything else) are easily reconfigured -- if you know python.
I'm very tempted to try it, but it has those nauseating, voodoo-like vi keybindings. What's wrong with using the sweet and pure emacs keybindings? Well, I'm going to go take a look now and see if that's configurable. MODERATOR HINT: I'm guilty of attempted humor, not flamebait.
Bad example -- the colors of traffic lights are not the only cue, the position also informs. There will be no widespread adoption of 3D displays until they get holovision working right.
Stereo vision != 3D, it's just a simulation (tied to silly looking glasses) and thus it will remain a novelty.
Kind of an idiotic thing to say, really. While they do help many, corrective lenses are certainly not a panacea (nor are the surgical options, which for many of us don't even exist).
Like many, my vision with corrective lenses is extremely poor in one eye. Looking at "3D" is not only ineffective, it gives me a blinding headache. Probably there are enough people for whom this is true that "3D" display technology based on 2D devices will fail in the marketplace.
Actually, if you follow the link the first comment on TFA says:
Actually the Top Award was given to another startup, Search Kick. they got the MS prize but also the prize of the design incubator.
the other prize, public vote, was given to learnthatname.
all great projects !
I haven't bothered to confirm it, but that's the claim.
That is really scary, especially in light of the fact that military personnel are essential government property and have no rights.

The Myths of Security

Modern cars are actually a pretty bad example. Your new car is "far more secure" against the average destitute crackhead non-pro thief, but cracking codes and cloning RFIs is actually pretty trivial for a pro. So it appears reasonable to conclude that (to paraphrase an old saw), "even the best security only works against the honest and the incompetent".
TFS is barely a blurb, while TF"A" is a post on a forum? How the hell did this get deemed front page worthy?
Plus anyway, what about freezing? First freeze, crack go the pipes -- which are embedded in concerte. This is an idiotic idea, unless you live in Hawaii...
Because that wouldn't have the same sensational ring to it?
But honestly, I think The Real Questions are, "Why does Bennett Haselton have to blog every silly thought that pops into his brain, and why does slashdot have to put them all on the front page?"
I had a bad experience with PayPal from the opposite direction. They sided with a dishonest eBay seller and facilitated him ripping me off, at which point I quickly deleted my eBay account. PayPal has many issues for sure, but this article is just "ZOMFG they're actually CHARGING me for a service!!!". Lame.
Gartner analyst Nick Jones said he is becoming "more concerned" about the future for Windows Mobile and added in a blog today that Windows Mobile 7 could be Microsoft's last update of the product."
What an idiotic statement. MS doesn't give up markets that easily (unfortunately). They'll have a windows mobile OS if they have to start building their own phones to sell it.
They don't merely want to do that, they actually do it. A corporate entity's rights are vastly superior to those granted a human citizen here in the US. That's what makes this country a socialist state for the rich, and a totalitarian state for everyone else.

Well, yes pretty much. Not unlike the difference between you hiring an accountant to analyze your finances versus the IRS conducting an audit on you.

Ack -- I mean thanks, Philip K Dickhead!
I blame the internet...
Ha! Thanks for the new sig, Samgilljoy -- I owe you one!

Certainly it's possible, they just need better shock absorption. The current design transmits too much of the shock to the skull.

Apparently all that astroturfing is paying off.
Apparently, pointing out that the emperor is nude is "flamebait" to some assholes. Sheesh!

The headline is inaccurate, as the story is more about how Nielsen isn't struggling to track modern viewing habits.

Any limits set initially may well change. This is just another reason to resort to bittorrent.
