I don't see the problem so many people are having. In XP+ when you put in a CD/flash/w/e you get a windows menu popup saying do you want to open in the browser or play in your media player or w/e. This seems perfectly reasonable. No code is being executed off the disk so no security hole. If you want the CD to run a splash or w/e it is one click. If you want to browse it one click. And it can be set to remember your answer for different devices. I completely fail to see the problem with that.

If this does mean that they are breaking U3 drives I'm happy for the change mind you.

  8. Usable on Russian Manned Space Vehicle May Land With Rockets · · Score: 1

I think while this is fairly useless for landing on earth. It could be more useful for landing on other planets. If we are landing on a planet without much atmosphere or some harsh environment parachutes could be rendered useless. Ignoring that repacking parachutes outside of a cleanroom using robots is not really done. So parachute re usability is down. As well parachutes do not allow you to chose a very specific landing point even here on earth where we know pretty much everything about the wind. As well most of the parts involved in retrorockets are already in the spacecraft or would be in a good future design. The only lost space/additional mass is in the fuel itself (which IS a lot).

I don't think it is a very useful idea NOW. But in future spacecraft or more likely with future propulsion systems it could be. As odd as this sounds firing your rockets at insanely precise amounts and angles with thousands of recalculations a second could be simpler than using a parachute.

As well, the downside many people mention of noplanb is silly. If parachutes don't deploy sure you have more time to think about it but you are still going to impact the earth fast enough to liquefy your body. I don't see why it matters if your death is decided at 10km in the air or 1km. The pieces of ship remaining would be slightly larger that is about it.

Also this is old tech. I played lunar lander yearrrrs ago.

  9. Re:Earning cash for virtual gold will be fine unti on Legitimizing Real Money Trading In Games · · Score: 1

I always wondered about this. Not so much from a player's POV that is sort of simple it can go a few ways. But from the game companies POV. They could support transfers by 'undoing' the tax by increasing the money during transfer. If it is counted as real wealth then is it a currency or a good? And then who owns it? If the players in the game own their gold fine. Then does the company own the rest of the gold (which would be really haard to determine at any given point). If gold is spawned on mob death vs spawned on mob creation. Do the mobs themselves take ownership over their own money.

Taxing then can only occur when e$ is traded for $$. I guess it would work the same way as paying for a service. Ignore the fact there is a virtual good and say you paid for the guy to play the game for you for so many hours. Then this is the same as ANY transaction. Anytime you buy a game from a friend and don't declare the purchase for taxation it is a black-market transaction. Or if you pay 5$ for a friend to go to the store and get you a beer it is a black-market transaction. The taxman will come after the Businesses. Just like if you set up a business where you would run to the store for people and have a clientele of 5000people. This won't stop people from selling on small scales. Also US law likely won't effect the CHINESE farmers in anycase. If a chinese law was implemented to tax 50% of $ made w/ gaming then you would have a problem. I doubt there will be any international agreements on this type of taxation for many years to come. So its not really a big deal.

That is NOT what he's saying at all. He's saying that 'high end' will be reasonably priced. We will surely continue to move forwards but the market is targeting a 100$ video card group and will continue to do so in future. Less games like crysis will be released that require you to spend 300$ on a video card.

Personally I think this is true. And I think most game companies have targeted 100$ or less video cards for a while now. But there will always be games like crysis that will allow you to make use of your cutting edge 500$ card. Games can easily be built to 'work' on a 50$ card and still with a few settings tax a 500$ card. There is minimal coding investment compared to other features so people will always want it.

Visiting a home is kind of odd since other people will live there. And if someone was on my front lawn crying and putting flowers on it I'd be freaked the fuck out.

Anyways visiting graves is more of a social obligation. It serves no purpose other than to prove to yourself and others that you are fulfilling your duty of grief. Or it can serve as a triggering mechanism. When you make yourself emotional and visit the grave which is a VISCERAL memory it can bring back memories more strongly. Also that visceral memory of the burial (grave) fulfills obligation no1, to grieve. A website could not really provide either of these.

On-topic: I think a notice to people I speak to online would be good. Just so that they know. I would like to know if someone I spoke to died as well. A site seems a bit silly but then everyone wants to leave something behind. That is the purpose of the grave from the deceased's pov.
