The first thing that feels strange after migrating to Linux is that you do not spend time tinkering. I have tinkered a bit grub menu when it was grub 1. Now, with grub 2, I have nothing to do. Wine works fine for photoshop and kitsune (I was too lazy to compile it). In fact, I have not compiled anything (except personal programs) since I played with linux from scratch 5 years ago. I use my computer. You are 10 years retarded and you completely missed the point.

Hello, I use Linux as my everyday desktop (ubuntu LTS) since 2.5 years. I have switched for many reasons (missing drivers on Vista64, openoffice and chrome identical on Linux, I know unix, religion, ...).
My return of experience is that Linux works fine enough for usage, but there are many strange "feelings".
    - It is strange to not always be installing software found on internet, deinstalling them because they are crap and then having to fix issues related to bad deinstallation.
    - On linux, there is no problem to find and install powerfull packages, but there is a step learning curve. The documentation is either not up to date, incomplete, not existant or does not go beyond basic stuff. On windows, I complain about bad software, on linux, I complain about my ignorance and the lack of time to learn. This is not good for self estim.
    - There is a feeling of loneliness. There is almost nobody I can ask when I have a question. Sometimes, I find a question on internet about a problem I have already encountered and solved. But once a problem is solved, it never occur again. I do not remember exactly how I did solve it. I can almost not help. Maybe I should search for a LUG to share my experiences. I have nothing to discuss with people having windows problems.

The main positive points that balance these negative feelings are:
    - that my disks are far easier to backup because of the clear separation of data and programs. It is trivial to mount backup images, rip DVD....
    - I can access my computer from anywhere (if it is on). I would like to setup the wake on lan, but I have not found clear documentation
    - My computer is as fast as 3 years ago, I have no need to change.

For me, the main problem of Linux usage is that there are too few of us.

All this money means more jobs that would be useless if the MAFIAA was not trying to preserve its obsolete business model.

Definitely, the MAFIAA has no excuse and all this nonsense cost a lot to society.

Linux is my desktop OS since two years. I have migrated mostly because my hardware was not supported by vista 64 (old printer and old scanner).
I have no software problem: open office, eclipse and google chrome are the same as on windows, wine works perfectly for the couple of remaining applications where I am too lazy to learn the Linux equivalent.
I just wish everybody migrate to Linux so that I can buy new hardware without worrying about linux support.

Very strange I am using linux since 2 years for the exact opposite reason. I have Ubuntu. It is a system that does not degrade with time. My computer is still marvellously fast as it was 2 years ago. With windows, I was always loosing time fixing issues. Now, I spend 100% of my time using the applications. I know openoffice is not perfect, but it is always improving automatically, not always degrading like microsoft office. When I need a new application, it is free and trivial to install. Most of us agree with the simple need of a compressed directory. We mainly disagree that adding features to the filesystem is a correct way to do that.
What you call "use esotheric workaround" is very trivial for most of linux developers. If you have the level of knowledge to need to compress a directory, you generally have the level to find it easy to do using the CLI.
I do not reject your lengthy rant about FOSS. Playing with mounting points, partitions (resize, move, ...) and file systems should be available without the CLI, using an eye candy gui.
The need is present since a long time and has never been solved. Ubuntu has provided a partial work-around using FUSE everywhere. I do not think this is a correct solution because it is hiding things, not making them simpler. This work-around has probably postponed the invention of a clean way to handle file systems.

The claims are stupid. Linus has clarified how and why the way Google has used kernel headers is fully authorised. But it is not a question of Linus opinion, the reasoning is easy to undestand:

    - Linux kernel can be used by non GPL programs. It is an indisputable goal of Linux.
    - To satisfy that goal, it was necessary to allow the usage of kernel interface description by non GPL programs. This authorization has been clearly given and do not restrict the manner this interface will be used.
    - The interface description is in the kernel headers. In these headers, in addition to the interface description, there are comments, nothing else. Are these comments protected by the GPL or free ? This is not so clear. Google has taken the less risky approach to use the headers in Android: they have removed all the comments (including the copyright notice), in order to keep only the explicitely authorized material.

Ingeneral, this is prohibited to remove copyright notice, but in this case, this is the correct way.

The accusations of Florian are bullshit. I think it should have been noticed in the summary that this is only FUD.

I think that Google has been very creative to keep the language syntax and the libraries almost identical (they are both patent free) and to not copy any other aspects of Java.
If a real patent (not trivial, ...) has still been violated, either it is a small violation that could be fixed by a small technical change, either this makes void all the work of Google and this removes all the point in having language syntax and libraries free.
