We have many faculty that are, how do I put it, well past their sell-by date. These faculty are 60-70 years old, commanding top dollar salaries, and for the most part, they do nothing but rest on their laurels. Fancy titles, distinguished, scholars, etc, but no grants, no teaching responsibilities, no real purpose other than committees, dean of this or that, and his is what they've done for the past 20-30-40 years. While I am by no means discounting the knowledge/wisdom/experience of these elder faculty, education should be a fluid, moving entity. Every University needs a succession plan.
My point is there is a HUGE cost here - the lack of funds available for new faculty. These departments have not had an influx of faculty in decades because as budgets get slashed, what funds are available are taken by tenured obligations. Sorry, but retire, move on, and make room for the next generation of faculty.
According to the RIAA, as "one credible analysis by the Institute for Policy Innovation concludes that global music piracy causes $12.5 billion of economic losses every year".
My used to get them printed at the Kodak Gallery on line, few hundred at a time. She makes a complaint and they either reprinted them or gave her a credit. Let's see what Shutterfly does.
FTFA, "If you factor out the super-loyal Toyota Prius buyers... No other hybrid was anywhere close [in overal sales]." Well no duh. If you factor out the Prius, what do you have left? Cars that have hybrid engine options that sell at a premium. As a Prius owner, 7 years and 47000 miles later, I may not even have to buy another car!
Take augmented user records, for instance (used in an AD/OD setup). They worked with 10.5 and 10.6 clients, but stopped working with 10.7 clients. Can I get a simple answer "why won't they work with 10.7"? No. Only Apple mumbo-jumbo. Thanks Apple.
Does it cost AT&T more money to have more bandwidth flowing across their network? If the same number of customers were all streaming Netflix at the same time, what would happen? Do packets really have cost?
By far and away the biggest abuses are allowing PhDs autonomous control of their careers. And once given tenure, they simply take those bad decisions and put them in affect for life. We have faculty that do not teach, do not write grants, do not do research, or take on administrative appointments to act like they are busy. Some have not been on campus or in the same state for months or years at a time. All the while, they draw salary because they are tenured. Those that retire milk the system for a huge retirement bonus, then get rehired; only death will get them to leave and make room for another generation. They let students fail and retake classes, allow students to take up to a decade to earn their PhDs, even allow students to live in other states while earning their degree.
The problem is "peer-review" management. They are their own bosses, they make their own decisions and once given tenure have absolutely no accountability to anyone but themselves. Fail.
iOs, Android, WebOS... was there really room for another platform? Wasn't Nokia taking a huge risk in a crowded market? Is Nokia really taking a risk with Windows 7? Just sounds like a business deci$ion to me.
What are the long-lat of this crater? I know privacy is an issue, but it would be nice to know if this is in central florida or the adriatic coast for example
Broadband users need to feel they have a choice and are not getting ripped off in order to feel satisfied.
They need to be able to work, real hard, without asking a ton of questions.
Something like the fulcrum on Blacklist

Where to pay to make it all go away. Maybe donations are the way to go? Or just sudo apt-get uninstall amazon?

The west is on fire because droughts happen. This Exxon CEO ought to tell this to the people in CO that have lost their homes. http://www1.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/cmb/images/fire/2012/05/total_dm_120529.png

40 years past their prime, no Eric Idle (as per the article)... be prepared to be underwehlmed I sadly think...

They certainly want out of the server market.
Another stunning example of Government of the people, for the people and by the people. Silly me, I forget, Corporations are "people".
Could someone please explain music copyrights? Is this for mechanical license or for performance?
What's become of the art of dumping?
Just use a printer and let them pile up on your desk. When you finally get to finishing that paper, they'll be there, somewhere!

given the man's insatiable desire for electricity it seems ironic that any nuclear plant is run for-profit.

Yeah? Evidently they're just sending it to my Yahoo! accounts then....
