This is indeed sad news. I first learned about Unix-like operating systems from the Compuserve forums. I had no idea that there was a whole ecosystem devoted to open source computing and tinkering beyond MS-DOS and Windows. Compuserve opened a wealth of information to me. RIP
That used to be the case because cheap phones didn't have GPS.
It's 2017, all phones have GPS.
It's VERY easy to fake GPS. Just download an app that overrides the GPS and put yourself wherever you want to be. Just for fun, I made it look like I was in London.
Science is an ever-evolving field. I've noticed that a lot of scientists display a lot of hubris so it's always refreshing to hear when a group admits that they were wrong or that they really do not know it all. The expert complex is really dangerous because there is nothing more harmful than advice given by people who claim expertise but do not have anything other than their own experience to go on.
Has convinced human resources departments everywhere that there is a correlation between credit scores and reliability - correlation does not imply causation. Furthermore, they've also managed to sell their product to consumers wishing to know what their credit score is. The rake in the money by the millions and the true victims are the plebes of society. Equifax sells their service to banks under the blanket of "helping the bank minimize risks." It is just another case of the 99% butt-raping the 1%.
The ME has DMA access to memory and disks and can open a network socket the main computer won't even be aware of. Any protection scheme on the computer can easily be subverted by the ME because it has ring 0 access to everything in the CPU such as, the kernel, the RAM, the disks and the network port. All communication to the CPU goes through the ME first. So when your computer decrypts that drive the ME can intercept and record the decryption key, it's also fully capable of decrypting the disk itself.
Now do you realize why people are so scared of it?
I had no idea that the vulnerability ran that deep! This is bad
This may be worth 0.02 or less but I believe the vulnerabilities can be mitigated somewhat by using disk encryption. I store all of my data on virtual encrypted file system with a hardware decryption key. When I am done with the filesystem, I just unmount it and remove the USB thumb drive that acts as the decryption key. Yes, it's a pain in the ass and yes, it really only works on desktops. It is a little impractical to do this on a server. It would be good for Google to find a way to stop this Intel menace.
AI and automation will be a big job killer for many, not just Filipinos. There is talk about having AI supplant brokers and fund managers in the financial industry. AI can make predictions and analyze data much, much faster than a human being. AI could almost render us obsolete and that is frightening. I have to agree with Steven Hawking's real dislike of AI and his dire warning that AI could be our undoing as a species.
I recently saw a documentary about India's energy issues. It turns out that in many of the major cities, the power grid is so unstable that businesses depend upon the almost daily use of backup generators. These backup generators are, of course, fossil-fueled. Imagine several thousand diesel generators running on top of the daily traffic and it is easy to see why air pollution is a significant problem.
You would be if he wasn't a dangerous fucking moron who talks but doesn't think. The rest of the world now just braces itself and hopes it doesn't turn out as bad as we think it will.
We are in 100% agreement. I am one of the more learned of voters and did not vote for the buffoon that Trump is.
We are the only country to have a reality TV star with neither any political experience nor any experience in international relations as our president . We are the laughing stock of the civilized world.
Talented people don't have to - and largely won't - work for douchey employers. They will go elsewhere and these companies will be left with the lowest common denominator of employees. So while they probably did not need to monitor them at the beginning, after a few years of turnover they certainly will.
I am not so sure. Maybe in better economic times, yes. Most employers are "douchey." Out of the jobs that I've had, perhaps only 1 or 2 met the criteria as ok places to work. I turned down a job offer as a work from home customer service agent because they required that the agent have a webcam. I asked if this was for assisting customers. They point blank told me it was to ensure that I was working. This sounded sociopathic because they can get their metrics from the phone system. So I it was either not take the job or allow them to install software on my computer. I think they were shocked when I said, "I think I'll pass." Corporate America also has to get over this expectation that people will get down on their knees and beg for a job. I kowtow to nobody.
Companies tend to be fascist institutions. You follow the leader, obey the hierarchy, and do what you are told. You have no input into how things work and are punished for deviating.
This kind of surveillance should be illegal across the board. It may be illegal in some states and companies would expose themselves to rather high dollar law suits.
Seriously, sleep deprivation can cause all kinds of health problems. Sleep is the time when your body heals and repairs damage during the day. Depriving yourself of this is a bad thing. I have started to feel better since getting a sleep apnea machine and I am sure I will feel even better once I get this extra weight off.
This whole daylight savings time thing is really a joke. It's time for it to go. The ending of daylight savings time is not so bad but the beginning of it is known to cause more health problems, including heart attack. I don't even know why we ever did it. Some claim that it was to give the farmers more light in the morning. Some claim it is so that school-aged children don't have to wait in the dark for the bus. Let's just get rid of this!
I almost feel bad for them, I get these fliers in the mail for a massive savings discount on bundles of services that I don't need or want. Maybe it'd be nice to have a home phone line for the kids to use, but at the prices offered I'd be better off getting them their own cell phones.
I don't feel bad for them. They've been greedy and anti-competitive for way too long.
You just might be the pointy-haired boss because studies show that productivity actually *increases* for those working from home. It is still possible to collaborate when everyone is remote. We have tools like IM, email, phone, and video chat to help make this possible. If someone who works from home has the proper environment, there are *fewer* distractions. Perhaps a large part of your job is redundant and your time would be better spent by not micromanaging your people and trusting them to develop a good product with minimal oversight.
Hope you get to feeling better! Also, maybe just leave the place. There are other less toxic places out there to work!

'nuff said.
Maybe, but I think they prefer burner cell phones to pay phones.

There is plenty of available skilled labor here in America. We should not be importing labor.

I like reading non-fiction and historical fiction. I am a military history buff.

The USA is a democracy
Ancient Chinese curse: may you get everything you want. Bwa ha ha ha ha!
The USA is really an oligarchy more than a democracy. We have certain facets of democracy but that's about it.

Given the lax attention to data security by corporate America, I wouldn't trust this program at all.
I am cheering this as a failure. I wouldn't trust a complete stranger in my home, especially while I am not there.

I did not even know SCO was still around, much less relevant. I thought they went Chapter 7 belly-up.

If you can't trust your employees, why are they your employees?
Exactly! Why would you employ someone that you cannot trust?
