    Or, it could be a decrease in the ability to count the spam. The spam is actually getting through. Rather than people clicking the 'This is Spam' option, they are just deleting the mail. This could easily account for it.

    Gifted children are taught by their parents, pushed by their parents, and learn to please their parents by doing what their daddy wants them to do.
    The article pointed out that the child that is good at problem solving (consistently) is there because the *child wants* to be good at problem solving and will put in the effort. Actually, replace problem solving with any other activity, mental or physical. Having parents doing the pushing is what contributes to the "fixed mindset".

    My guess is that Mozart is not one of the people to be used in relation to this article. I would guess that he is an exception rather than the rule. The occurrence of that sort of gift would be 1 in a billion. The rest of us have to do the best that we can.

    I don't have kids, yet, but when they are kids I will be pushing them to be kids and just play. It works for the animal kingdom, and it will be good enough for any monsters I sire.

    We (the USA) are not at war with anyone right now, and haven't been since WWII.
    Wow, cut out for politics 'eh? Have had "military engagements authorised by congress", but not declaration of war. Smooth talker. This is why a lot of countries loath the US. Well, the government anyhow.

    North and South Korea are actually beginning talks that have never occurred since the Korean War.     Walk away. If you don't want to sign, don't. These large companies/organisations only win because people whinge and bitch, and then rollover like good little puppy dogs. Don't let them win. If you've become an important part of the company/organisation, they won't let you go. Either that, or find an employer that doesn't do this. Send a message loud and clear.

    I gave in just recently. I think the important thing is to refuse to give the phone number out. My girlfriend, my dad and my brother are the only people that have it (and I have sworn statements [signed in blood] that they are not to forward the number ... sorry, haha, little joke. No friends!). My carrier gives me to opportunity to choose whether to show my number when I call (caller id) ... clearly that 'feature' is disabled.
    Sure, people get a little pissed that I don't give to them, taking it as an insult. But you only have to show tough love at the start.

    So, is this the reason why my boot times are much slower (just kick started my incremental backup routine)? Does this mean that I don't perform anymore updates as I can't trust them (yes, I know. I shouldn't really be trusting them in the first place)? Dammit. Starting to look like I have to go to Linux full-time. I've tried to install ubuntu on this machine, but it doesn't like it (graphics are the problem - the command line appears to work fine, but don't know how to configure the X11 properly).

    Does anybody know of a dist that runs flawlessly on a MacBook Pro? And by flawlessly, I mean not having to tune every, single config file.

    Jerry Seinfield has said that comedy movies are really hard to do. Comedy should be prescribed in short doses (a transcript for this quote is not yet available but should be soon - http://www.abc.net.au/tv/enoughrope/pastepisodes/date_2007.htm).
     
    I loved the Futurama movie ... lots. I actually watched it in short bursts (not the episodic way that David describes) but because my girlfriend thinks it is stupid and she gets bored with it (yes, it could be the source of a breakup). I had to download it because it will be AGES before it comes to Australia, but will buy it when it does. I can't miss the episode of hypnotoad.

    ... everyone I've known who has died, has died of cancer.

    I know one, my grandfather. He had advanced stages of cancer and after watching his wife die a long, slow, drawn-out and painful death, he shot himself in the head with a shotgun while he still could. Aged 88.

    I think euthanasia laws need to be revised. I understand that it is hard for the families but it is harder for the person up shit creek. The doctors basically 'euthanised' my mother (aged 48), but she had to have cancer grow everywhere, and suffer long 7 years, in and out of a hospital bed before the doctors can legally up the dosage of morphine to counter the 'pain'.

    I think this is one of the main reasons why I dislike religions so much.

    Yeah, time management is not really something that the 'facebook generation' have had to deal with. The same group with ample study (business and peer-review) indicating the amount of time spent on company time socialising.

    If you want something done, give it to a busy person. The thing about getting lots of things done regularly is being able to work undisturbed. Email allows this. IM has its place, as does video conferencing, but will not dominate.

    Couldn't agree more. The people interviewed clearly know little about time management. You know, the whole 'If you want something done, give it to a busy person' thing. Let us remember that this is the Facebook generation. The same where there are countless studies of people wasting time and money.

    The Chinese sub is not even a particularly sophisticated one. Who said they were looking to put some egg on the face of the US Navy? Maybe they were trying to work out the capability of the US Navy. Perhaps they've been doing this stuff for some time but decided this time to push it as far as they could to work out how the US navy would respond. How much time do I have once I've been spotted? How much damage could I do before I was taken out.
