Besides which, MS is going to be too busy appealing the breakup over the next few years to worry about licensing violations.

No problem at all. I'm saying I've been doing this for 15 years now, and I have yet to get a virus, even though I'm not particularly careful. It's because I don't open executable attachments and I don't enable macros when I have to read something in Word. The ILOVEYOU trojan never hit me; if it had showed up here, I wouldn't have bothered opening the attachment (even before I knew about ILOVEYOU). I personally think that malicious virus-writers are the scum of the earth, but 15 years for petty vandalism and taking advantage of human stupidity? The only thing a law like this will do is ensure that the virus kids cover their tracks more carefully. Outlook users who open script attachments will be even more likely to get viruses now that they think harsh penalties will deter anyone.

I have never had a virus here at work(*). This is because I don't run programs from the internet until I scan them, and I certainly don't use Word or Exchange. Attachments to my email are scrapped if they're executables and scanned if they're Word documents. I scan for viruses maybe once a month with an updated version of McAffee, and it has yet to find a virus.

(* I've found viruses on our network drive due to students bringing in their macro virus-infected disks, and I found a virus at home once, but I blame that on the warezed version of Battlechess)

The article was pretty sketchy and seemed to have some errors in it...I want to see the original paper submitted to Nature to see how the guy set up his experiment. Light itself, being massless, would not seem to violate Einstein's theory of relativity if it were to travel faster than c; the theory says that any object that starts out slower than c will never exceed it, but allows for objects that go faster than c: they just aren't allowed to fall below the "speed limit."

    Attention Sellers:

The following information is provided to help you avoid selling a prohibited or potentially infringing software item. This information is provided for all software listings, and it in no way implies anything about the listing you are currently submitting.

eBay Policy: CD-R and "beta" copies of software may not be listed on eBay unless you are the copyright owner of the software (and state that in your listing). Back-up copies of software may not be listed on eBay, regardless of the legality of your item. Sale of unauthorized copies of software probably is a copyright infringement. Under some circumstances, sale of OEM software (that comes with a computer) and "academic software" is a copyright infringement. Offering to sell infringing items may result in legal liability, the ending of your listing and/or suspension from eBay.

What I found interesting about the paper is that nowhere did I see the actual number of respondents from the pool who answered in a particular way (I skimmed through the paper, so I could be mistaken). All I saw were the alpha coefficient ratios. These ratios are completely arbitrary and depend on the statistician's idea of what is "significant" for a particular factor. In other words, if they decided that 10% of people responding that video games made them feel more aggressive was a "significant" amount, then they can claim that it is, and the alpha coefficient doesn't reflect the fact that the actual percentage is small. This is what I remember from my stats course, but I'm a theoretical mathematician, not a statistician, so if anyone knows more about stats than me, please feel free to correct me. :)
