"They actually removed that feature as a response to GeoHot announcing he was going to crack the PS3."
They actually have never said anything of the sort. And let's be clear about what Geohot actually said, while we're at it: he wanted to modify OtherOS to take full advantage of the PS3's hardware rather than the limited set it could use as released. So Sony *may* have removed OtherOS as a response to someone uncrippling it and making it somewhat useful, but there is zero evidence for this theory.
These are good points, and they were brought up a year ago when Dan Molina from Kaspersky Labs gave his BSides Denver 2010 presentation on just this subject. The heckling was so harsh I felt a little bad for the guy, but it looks like the company decided to push the idea anyway.
(SLOW DOWN, COWBOY! Slashdot requires you to type like two old people hunting and pecking at a single keyboard with the occasional bout of incontinence and hip-breaking.)
"I have no clue what measures Sony took previously to ensure security."
They had no CISO and the compromised systems were (according to scans floating around the net--check previous Slashdot PSN articles) last updated sometime in 2008. So the answer to your question is "fuck-all."
Well now you can update to CFW 3.55 (I recommend kmeaw) and use any of several new methods to get linux back on the machine you own, as well as being able to play pretty much every game released before Portal 2 (and some after).
No. They lost all credibility the second they aired their first wrestling broadcast. I fail to see how throwing more money at the network will make it stop sucking at this point.
You give them more money, you'll get Sharktopus sequels. Guaranteed.
"Over two days [...] the railroad network in the southern United States was converted [to] standard gauge"
Compare and contrast: 2 days to convert 11,500 miles of railways to narrower gauge vs. PSN downtime.
Of course I know Visa's probably reaming Sony for PCI concerns right now, but I'm still going to sit back with this delicious popcorn and enjoy the show.

"no longer will they need to release a 'remake', they can re-release the original with this algorithm attached and they're done."
I look forward to paying $65 for SMB3 again.
Ah, I see I'm not the only one who thought of playing old DOS strip poker games with this algorithm.
"I can't wait for Sunday just so we can stop hearing about this shit."
Yes, because I'm sure the idiots will go away and not calculate a new end-of-the-world datestamp. Maybe with a time zone this time.
This is utterly fucking retarded.
"They certainly have the ability to crack your skull like the dumbass you are, but they don't, because then they'd be in trouble."
Only if someone catches it on tape, and they don't then brutalize that person and steal the tape. Until that happens, you were "resisting arrest."

"only vote for people that actually represent you."
It would be nice if I could find one.
Thanks, Bush.
And thanks, Obama, for continuing it.
Shouldn't this be in the "No Fucking Shit Dept."?

Call me a cold-hearted bastard, but I can't seem to summon up any sympathy for the poor, downtrodden movie industry on this one.
And nothing of value was lost.

"The last 7 of the 10 commandments are generally enforced by law books in most countries by thousands of laws."
Which countries have laws against coveting?
Man, I am WAY behind. Everyone needs to pitch in and do their part.
BT5 was released yesterday.
These cocksuckers don't even try to be subtle any more.
The movie sucked almost as bad as all the TV spinoffs, except the movie had very slightly better acting.
"I guess I missed a lot of cinema..."
I don't know that "missed" is the right word. "Narrowly avoided," maybe.

Sorry, could you repeat that?
"the total is equivalent to a 5.6-billion-mile-high stack of books stretching from Earth to Neptune and back to Earth, repeated about 20 times."
I'm American. How many football fields is that?
And how much of that is only "information" in the most technical sense of the word, consisting of LOLcats, ASCII dongs and such?

As I pointed out elsewhere, Sony's not going to risk a congressional anal probing and PCI smackdown by Visa just to have some sort of cover story.
