How's this for a rule of thumb: if you don't think Google should know about it, DON'T TELL THEM ABOUT IT.

The internet is a near instantaneous global communications network: disseminating information is a primary function, transmitting data is a primary function, retaining anonymity and protecting privacy are tertiary functions at best. Bottom line: Schmidt has it right, don't put anything on the internet that you wouldn't want on the internet. Sounds pretty "duh" when you actually think about it.

I've never had any experience with such a system, despite having multiple experiences in multiple parts of the country. I've had to wait in the Northeast, I've had to wait in the mid-Atlantic, I've had to wait in the Northwest, I've had to wait in the South, I've had to wait in cities, I've had to wait in suburbs, I've had to wait in the country, and I once had to wait 45 minutes on the side of a major thruway with a bleeding compound fracture just for an ambulance to show up and bring me to the hospital (where, guess what, I got to wait some more).

    Try again.

You think that adulthood frees you from bullies? You're clearly blind. Or maybe you've been lied to.

I've been an adult for years, and I still encounter bullies on an almost daily basis. Hell, I'm a bully from time to time, when I feel that the situation warrants it (and I fully acknowledge that partial personal judgment is the mother of all rationalizations... spare me). The methods have shifted, as physical bullying has become less viable and more punishable, but psychological/social/emotional bullying is here to stay so far as I can tell.

In fact, as somebody who was bullied in high school, I can say without a doubt that the deepest scars are in my mind. Losing a few fistfights against people I never really cared about hurt a little at the time, learning that even "nice" people will gladly throw me under the bus if it made them look a little bit "better" and never so much as look back at the hell they sowed, and that doing so never actually had any negative repercussions, has pretty much soured me on the entire human experience.

I can lie and say it made me stronger, that now I understand the axiom about evil winning when the good do nothing, but the truth is that I don't really believe in human good anymore. I can't trust people not to hurt me, and I can't be trusted not to hurt them, because what I've really learned is that hurting others is the fastest way to get ahead.

There is virtually nothing I can put on a W-2 that will allow an employer to withhold less money, so I'm pretty much stuck with overpaying now and being refunded later.

Of course, we're also talking about $200-$400 in a year... money that I have no immediate need or profitable use for (maybe if investing it wasn't nearly guaranteed to lose me money, that would change somewhat). Basically, it's not worth my while to dig until I find whatever loophole would let me pay less up front, at least not until I make substantially more in a year.

Surely his neighbor cannot be the only guy in Santa Fe with a wireless router, and probably isn't even the only neighbor with one. Not to mention that I'm willing to bet cell phones work just fine there, and they work in similar ways on similar frequencies. I think his only effective recourse is to remove himself from anywhere that has an abundance of such radiation.
