So OO.o isn't a fully functional, intuitive, reliable office sweet? So Ubuntu isn't easy enough to use and install that I'd feel comfortable handing my mom an install cd and walking her through the installation process over the phone and count on her being able to use it hassle free indefinitely? Ogg isn't a worthy media format? Firefox isn't leaps and bounds better than IE by every metric other than raw usage and market penetration? Amarok and MPlayer don't wipe the floor with WMP? ODF isn't a more stable, portable, and efficient document format than .doc?

You sir, are a tool. FOSS is only "getting" Microsoft by developing superior products and giving everyone a choice in what software they run. If Microsoft didn't believe themselves to be entitled to our money and CPU cycles, and view any attempt at competition as a direct assault on their god-given right to monopoly then this wouldn't be a problem.

If it were, they wouldn't be relocating to Canada, where businesses are very highly taxed (to help fund things like national health care), costs and standards of living are comparable to those in the US, and the locals are not inclined to do difficult and normally very high paying work any cheaper than those of us to the south because they aren't actually desperate.

This is probably more about hiring top talent from other countries who are unable to achieve citizenship or maintain the proper visas long-term. Vancouver's a pretty cool place, so it probably wasn't that hard a sell saying "look, your immigration status is getting to be a hassle for everyone, so we'd like to transfer you to your Vancouver office so we can all get back to work and not worrying about the INS finding an undotted 'i' or uncrossed 't', you won't have any cash salary pay, but since our taxes are a lot higher there, we won't be able to give you health insurance anymore... oh, but don't worry, they have a very good national health care system, and so long as you don't need anything exotic you probably won't even notice the difference."

Not liking MS is all well and good... but come on, this is just silly.

    Dear Richard,

Can I call you Dick, great, thanks Dick.

Yes, Dick, it's true, if you analyze enough stories, you find that there are only a few types of events.

Specifically, "$noun $verb" and often some number of "$adjective" or "$adverb" or more "$noun" and "$verb" fields.

Of course, this all obscures the fact that when stuff happens, it's news, and if people care about it, it's news worth reporting. This story involves stuff happening (specifically, researchers found a way to write software which will help respond to traffic problems), and people (particularly those who drive) care about it.

So there you go, Dick, it all makes sense. You can rest assured that despite the veracity of your statement, there is in fact news worth reporting to be had. I hope this cleared everything up for you, dick.

Sorry, but I just don't see where the problem comes in. Heck, I think a lot of problems could be solved by simply building a bot into the game... if everyone could skip the tedium of mindless grinding by having a bot do it while they sleep, or even better by having the server automatically distribute gold according to some sort of average table while a character is not currently in use, then it could make the game more fun for everyone AND completely defuse the farming and bot problems.

The solution is to have a couple of good music stores in the area.

It always baffles me when people say they can't find even slightly obscure music until I remember that I live in an awesome culture bubble; I grew up with both a very good new music and excellent used music store right in town, and could double or triple both numbers by driving an extra 10-15 minutes to the nearest (very small) city. Anything we really wanted and couldn't get right away we could have special ordered, and it was rare that such a thing needed doing. I still have trouble comprehending when places like Best Buy or FYE (to be fair, they aren't so bad for a national chain) only carry an artist's latest release, or when they forgo well-known and highly influential bands that broke up over a decade ago for some no-hit-wonder pop kid that everybody has already forgotten just because they weren't born yet when the former was in their prime.

Anyway, if anyone out there is in the Amherst/Northampton, MA area and doesn't know any good music stores, check out Mystery Train (used) and Newbury Comics in Amherst, or Turn It Up! in Northampton. In Buffalo I also used to go to New World record on Elmwood, I recall it being next to a Spot Coffee.

The internet is great and all, but there's nothing quite like browsing through a local B&M for music.

I think the real problem, then is that in WoW "skill" can be bought. If some total chess n00b managed to play at a grand master level and hold his own, nobody would bitch about how he "cheated" and skipped the years of practice and learning that everyone else to go through... they'd be shitting themselves over what a genius such a kid must be to overcome decades of lacked experience and hold their own against someone who has been considered a master since before the prodigy was born.

The difference is that you can't buy your way into being better at chess, you're just either good or not good and that's that. The pieces and rules are always the same, and the only thing you can really buy is a nicer looking and longer lasting set, but never one that is notably different to play with.

Maybe if WoW were a game based on skill, rather than on the amount of time devoted to playing, this problem wouldn't exist.
