i can't decide if you're a troll, or simply misinformed. i'm going to give you the benefit of a doubt, and point out that "gnu/linux operating system" is not the same as the "linux kernel".
rms does not state that he is a major developer of the "linux kernel". gnu/linux is the combination of the linux kernel and gnu software, which rms did quite a bit to develop.

you seem to be confused about the difference between source apis and binary apis. binary apis can change without breaking the source-level api. so, no work has to happen with the open-source drivers, since they get the new binary api when they are next compiled.
people with binary-only drivers, on the other hand, are screwed.
it doesn't do much for folks like nvidia, who have an open-source module layer to load their binary driver.
actually, video game console manufacturers sell their hardware at a loss, and make up for it by charging for their development environment and/or licensing fees for game developers.
sounds like a good deal to me. i get a nice linux box, microsoft loses money. everybody wins!

"My prediction is in 2010, slashdot will be full of anti HP slogans"
my predictions for slashdot in 2010.
archived on a set of dvd-rw discs, buried in cmdrtacos basement, because va linux went bankrupt
merged with freshmeat to create "slashmeat", only has poorly-spelled software announcements.
18,742nd "yro" article posted, which is witty, intelligent, and insightful. goes unnoticed since everyone has been filtering katz' stuff since 2005.
dastardly scheme uncovered in which it is revealed that hemos, jamie, john katz, and 58% of the slashdot readers don't really exist - they're all cmdrtaco.
slashdot staff worth $80,000,000 in va linux stock - but it doesn't matter, because that's almost enough for the mcdonalds two-for-one special on tuesdays.
cmdrtaco married; took a decade to find someone uglier than hemos' wife.
4,251,974th "first post" that isn't the first post posted.
cowboyneal's body mass becomes so dense, he collapses into a singularity. readers bitch about slashboxes never being fixed.
cmro taco is quoted as saying "*bsd suckz!! linux rulez!!" (by the wipo troll). ignites a holy crusade, in which the geek compound is burnt to the ground by a mob of disgruntled *bsd developers who are sick of playing second fiddle.
14,622nd "cowboyneal" survey option still not funny.
i believe you are correct, though an earlier poster was also correct about cyrix doing this crap as well.
i still have an amd k5 pr100 (my old kde desktop system) - though i believe they only used the "p" rating on the first generation of the k5 series, as i seem to recall running the system at 100mhz. or i might have just overclocked it.
and am i just hallucinating, or did they use the "p"-rating on the very first generation of k6 chips?
well, i'd be more than happy to go all the way to the store to buy them. except none of the stores will sell linux game titles.
i really think that retail stores' refusal to stock linux games has much more to do with loki's failure than piracy. but i suppose that piracy hurts a lot more when you don't have the sales to make up for it.
sawfish seemed to like xinerama just fine for me, and i hear that window maker also supports it.
sawfish seemed (at the time, before gnome 1.4) to have a few bugs with window positioning - i had a 19" at 1600x1200, and 4 15"ers at 1024x768 - sometimes a window would end up in the "dead space" above one of the 15" screens. but windows would maximize correctly (maximized on _that_ screen, not across all 5) and everything seemed generally to be working well.
the bsd ports system is interesting, but it takes forever to install anything since it all has to be compiled, and it's dependencies compiled, and it's dependencies' dependencies compiled, ad nauseum.
i'd hate to try installing kde or gnome on a *bsd box. it would take a bleeding eternity.
ymmv, i've only used openbsd. and i know that openbsd is trying to get a binary package system set up, but when i tried it (shortly after the 2.9 release) there were no binary packages for it. ---
the Grail laserdisc was packed with extras. they had at least one (and it may be more - it's been many years since i've seen the ld) commentary tracks, many language tracks & subtitles, and some extra footage.
my favorite was the french taunter scene, where they had subtitles with the english translation of the japanese translation (that's english -> japanese -> english) of the dialog. it was hysterical seeing how badly the frenchman's insults were translated.
i sure hope they do a completely new transfer from the original film for this re-release. 'cos the one on the current dvd sucks rocks. picture is way too dark, and there are tons of compression artifacts. ---
am i the only one who thought that rowan atkinson did an amazing job as the dr. in that bbc dr. who parody?
sure, it was tongue-in-cheek, but i could see rowan atkinson pulling off the role of the doctor amazingly well if they ever bring back the tv series... ---
well, i was going to moderate, but i couldn't resist.

go grab a copy of turbo vision for unix. it's on freshmeat. it's a port of the old borland turbo vision text gui toolkit for dos.
it's in c++, not c, but it wouldn't be too difficult to make a c binding. or just use c++.
whatever you do, don't use curses. it sucks rocks. unless, of course, your app only needs text entry widgets and buttons.
if you must use curses, at least use cdk (curses development kit) which makes the life of the curses programmer much easier. the maintainer was very responsive to the issues i encountered when using it. ---
go look at debian. debian 2.2 was released with support for 6 architectures, and there should be at least one more for 2.3.
2.2 is a bit out of date (xfree 3.3.6, glibc 2.1.3) but it's very stable. and you can always try life in the fast lane and use the testing or unstable branches.
disclaimer: i'm a debian developer. i'm biased in favor of debian, but only because it's the greatest linux distro ever, while all the others suck rocks. ---

that would be great, but i don't fucking use windows.

not like this article is premature or anything...
my predictions for slashdot in 2010.
dunno... but doesn't it seem pretty wrong to call this version of windows the "limited edition?"
i've used lots of different versions of windows, and i thought they were all pretty limited.

now i know the slashdot editors may still get excited when a mainstream media outlet mentions linux. but i got over it about three years ago.
