    Yet there are lots of seemingly small things that endear me to Linux that aren't found easily on Windows, especially not without installing a bunch of crap (that I would have to pay for) that may bogs down my system.

    Example? The options in the context menu with KDE. It keeps track of the common places *I* use to move and copy files, it doesn't assume I want to put it one place. This makes it more "my context menu" instead of "KDE's context menu".

    The context menu also allows me to transform and convert my images correctly (don't know if that one is standard to KDE). Incredibly useful to me.

    "Everything you *can* do on Linux can be done in Windows one way or another" may be true, but my point is "it can be done, but it isn't done." In cases where it is done, it's pain to set up, run, or pay for. I hate to use an overused seven-year-old buzzword, but I find the paradigm shift in Linux so much more useful. It's liberating.

    Don't be so paranoid. It's really a non-issue unless you're running around screaming something blatantly inciteful and violent, like "KILL ALL MEMBERS OF THAT RACE!!!" Despite having this law, we're a lot more free than most countries right now.

    So this network management is, as we've stated, one of the ways to address the issue of congestion during peak periods.

    That's a fine and dandy argument for ISPs, but I know mine (Shaw) throttles mine at non-peak hours. Very often they actually kill the connection and force you to reset your connection if you leave it running overnight. I don't even share big stuff that often, it's usually little stuff that has a small following.

    Despite the argument, if they are purposefully intending on giving you less than what your contract agrees you're paying for, yes, it's fraud.

    If it's really such a huge problem, why don't they set definitive quotas and give tools to users so they can work together? They could make a bloody simple script which would email users when they reach certain percentages on the quotas for the month. They could have a usage page where you get to set YOUR preferences on what you'd like to do when you reach certain quotas. Instead they would rather pay several tech staff to call people who they 'feel' are downloading too much and tell customers they have to buy a 'business' plan!

    Given that that's the logical thing to do and they aren't doing it, I conclude the actual goal is to force people into buying pricier packages, not "reducing network congestion during peak hours". It's all BS.

    Wow, and all this time I thought it was because male techs tend to have limited interests and are difficult to work with when you're female. In my experience, the techies are either a) very unfriendly, or b) much too friendly. It's really not the subject matter that turns women off. It's the atmosphere. It's also repeatedly hearing what roles people expect them to go into. For example... do you think comments like yours are going to inspire any woman to go into IT? Good job. //female computer scientist

    I started hanging out here more recently, and I've noticed troll modifiers are used in over-abundance. When used with a heavy hand, it says two things about the person They don't like what someone says. They are so arrogant of their own position that they can't even entertain that another opinion might warrant consideration and thought.

    Bacon number is a measure of number of steps to get to Bacon, it is not 0(1). For example, if we were to do Degrees of Hitler, "I know Hitler" would have a Hitler number of 1, but "I AM Hitler" would have a Hitler number of 0. I would guess then that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Bacon has a Wikipedia (Bacon) number of 0.

    Many times the customer calling in believes that they automatically know more than you, since you're just a "script reading monkey." Once armed with this belief, they ignore everything you say and insist that their diagnosis must be correct, even when its absolutely bollocks. Add another +1 to fun when you're female too and you not only get the jerks but the sexist jerks as well. I've had more than one person hang up when they hear my voice, and then call back and get mad because they were waiting another 20 minutes and got me again. "Don't you have any male technical people working there?"

    The merchant rules (in that respect) are the same in Canada, except that businesses blatantly say it costs extra to use plastic. The policy doesn't seem to be enforced by the credit companies. Something you'll also find is being polite but firm in a support call will often yield positive results. You're racking up their call time (a major metric that phone support is graded on), but they have no way of getting rid of you because you haven't given them a reason to. If they dropped you, they would be reprimanded. i.e. Don't let them off the phone. I've gotten a higher-insterest savings account this way, and reduced my Mastercard rate by 11% (the Mastercard call took 90 minutes, but it was worth it). A good way of dealing with this with your ISP is to arm yourself with techinical information, and ask technical questions. Ask questions about the CONTRACT YOU SIGNED, not necessarily the contract they assumed you have accepted (new versions forced upon you without consent). Remain polite and clam, and ask for definite answers. I wonder what would happen if you got hard numbers for a max cap and asked for a pro-rated refund for months you didn't all your data transfer. Oh boy, you could come up with some really fun questions...

    Not sure about cheques, but credit/debit payments cost the company for each use, plus the manpower and associated costs to process it. There's the reason why stores tag on $0.50 for interac purchase, especially if they're under $10.00.

    People use two definitions of "intuitive".

    One is "the way I learned to do it by doing it multiple times or seeing it all the time"

    Two is "a natural way to learn, or a natural interface".

    They're not necessarily the same. People usually mean definition #1, but it's inaccurate. If you use definition #1, it can be difficult to unlearn bad habits and re-learn new ones, even though they may be better.

    If you need an analogy, think of the different keyboard styles and layouts.

    Same analogy can be applied even to thought and methods, not just physical devices.

    Why do you *need* to own the movie? Besides, I gather Netflix lets you watch the same movie again. Do we really *need* to hang on to all sorts of junk in our homes that is easily acquired or bought? What great loss is there if you don't own a movie? You can find it when you need it. I've got a short stack of DVDs on my bookshelf. The ones I really like have only been watched five or six times, which seems like a lot. Something like Netflix would easily satisfy my "needs" (if I still watched movies).

    More likely call your kid, or your neighbour's kid. My parents are still using Windows and I've been using Linux for two years. When they phone me, I don't know if I should feel happy or sad. "Uh... it's doing what? I don't know where to fix that or change that, I don't remember. Look in the menus or help file?"

    I just tell people my cell phone is for my convenience, not theirs. I tell them I usually leave it turned off (even though I leave it on and the ringer is set to "1-beep"... I just ignore a lot of calls that I don't feel like answering right then). You can also train people without having to use the words "Fuck off". I try not to get angry about those who are resistant to training, it's much more fun if you look at it as a game (ohhhhh... how else can I try to train you???).

    Only if you're stupid enough to use the same password for something that requires security and something that doesn't. Frankly, if someone hacks into my user accounts that I could care less about, I could... care less. My banking and very personal info have secure unique passwords. Everything else uses the same one or two passwords. It would be annoying if my blogger or hotmail account went down, but I'd live. The type of stuff I blog about isn't identifyingly personal, and my hotmail is used for junk.
