I spent years going through a couple of phones a year trying to find what was basically a small computer that happened to make calls and was repeatedly disappointed by most phones. they are all designed to wear out. We usually throw on a DVD each night when we go to bed. We would set the sleep timer on the TV so it would power off, but the poor DVD players had no such option. They'd finish the movie, then spin the disk all night long displaying the menu. Inevitably, they'd burn out. We've probably gone through 7 or 8 dvd players in the bedroom. When we decided to throw a blu-ray player in there we did what we SHOULD have done from the beginning. We got a timer for the outlet and set it to kill the power for 5 min every night at 1 AM.

Would I have paid more for a dvd player with bomb proof internals, sure. Unfortunately, we tried a range from $25 dollar cheapies to a $200 one and there was never any rhyme or reason to how long before failure. The shortest time was about 3 months, the longest probably 2 years for a midpriced one we got at Frys.

So, in the end we've found a way to stop eating players (that and watching a lot of netflix helped) . HOWEVER this could have all been avoided with a few lines of code to add a sleep timer, or to turn the thing off if it's been sitting at the root menu for more than an hour would have gone a long way and I was always frustrated that no DVD player seemed to have this. Of course, the faster it dies (without being TOOO soon and ending up a warranty item) the faster you pay to replace it...

Netflix's big coup, I think,is that they very quickly got it on a ton of gadgets that connect directly to your TV. It's going to be hard to compete if you have a dedicated device because the difference in content just isn't compelling enough for a lot of people to switch AND buy more gadgets.

Now you might see a channel on ROKU, or a new app for PS3, but for all my netflix blu-ray players, unlikely.

Give me a break. If you want to blame anyone for this kind of thing, blame the anti-nuclear fear mongering crowd. They have so tainted the perception of nuclear power that practically the only reactors used are older, less resilient and more dangerous designs. What if we were all still driving cars from the 60's and 70's? Would you be surprised that they were less safe? No one is going to build a safer, more efficient reactor when they have to get a trillion dollars in insurance first and spend 10 years and millions of dollars playing political and PR games to find a place to put the damn thing and THEN have to build it in the boonies, raising operating costs and transmission losses.

The irrational "what if" doomsday crap overshadows more real dangers to health, national security and the economy that comes from using fossil fuels for power. We might actually have the infrastructure for an electric car system if we had dirt cheap nuclear power to create all that electricity, but as long as that juice comes mostly from coal and natural gas, it will probably remain a niche market.

So anyway, you can point that finger at yourself. Without your paranoia, we could have built new reactors and mothballed these old things years ago.

Small vessels getting close enough to do serious damage seems more of a failure of procedure than a failure of weapons.
