good lord how many times will the DRM argument be trotted out. I can tell you from hands on experience, nothing in Vista is preventing me from backing up my DVDs with DVD Decrypter or similar tools. Nothing is stopping me from ripping my CD's with winlame either. Even Windows Media Player gives you the option to disable DRM when you rip to WMA. so....... what exactly is the argument here? it seems to ME that it's "i bought this damn song and windows won't let me get around the DRM". what MS is doing is no different than any other company that produces and OS. Do you REALLY expect them to openly facilitate circumventing DRM? hello lawsuit... there are plenty of apps that run just fine in Vista that let you do this. it comes down to this: use/buy DRM'd media, play by their rules. don't blame the OS.

now, just replace all occurances in your post of microsoft OS's with Apple and you may be accurate. i'd say microsoft has historically done a pretty good job of backward compatibility, maybe at the expense of a more secure, stable and speedy OS. Apple is much more inclined to modify their OS at the expense of compatibility. Microsoft can't win can they? If they limit compatibility with older apps to improve the OS they lose. If they keep allowing DOS programs to run, they lose.

I've had only 1 major compatibility issue (hardware) so far and no software issues. Apple should be flogged for this little publicity stunt. The RTM (release to manufacture, aka gold, aka final effing version) has been available for months. Seems pretty convenient that apple could pinpoint and fix the issue so quickly, but couldn't have done it earlier than this. Now, maybe the folks at apple didn't say "hey lets sit on this issue so we can get press", but maybe they said "hey, let's not mess with vista and see what the users flush out, we might get some press"

i just can't get my head around a "pro" using only an online repository to manage photos and metadata AND not having a backup. weird. why don't they go to a photo site like photo.net? there are some amazing portfolios there from "pro" and non "pro" photographers. metadata, citiquing, rating. and no yahoo login to bunch ones panties.

and another thing. if you installed vista on a laptop, you are mental. XP barely runs right on a typical corporate issue Dell laptop (1yr old, 1.5GB ram). between logging on/off of domain, startup /shutdown scripts, network connections, etc. xp takes from 5-10 minutes to boot/shutdown. don't base your opinion of vista on a laptop install until you run it on hardware made for it.

"SD is good enough for me!", "there's no content", "hdtv is too expensive", "cable is too expensive"... blah blah blah. or is it bah bah bah?

    1. SD may be good enough for you. that's great. but for others, it's not. doesn't exactly invalidate the concept of hdtv does it?

    2. there's plenty of content (always room for more though). that damn wiki list posted earlier was by no means all inclusive. What you mean to say, is "there's no content i want to watch". fair enough. again, that doesn't mean the rest of us don't want to watch. a common misconception is that, because abc/nbc/cbs only rehash their regular shows, all channels do the same. DiscoveryHD is not a mirror of what's on Discovery... Mostly original content, shot in HD for their exclusive use. I just recorded an HD converted showing of "A Clockwork Orange" on UHD or INHD the other day. it looks way better than my DVD copy. I swear some of you have not had cable in 10 years and think that there have been no changes...

    3. It can be expensive. However, a lot of the same people saying "65 inch TV's are stupid, i just need a small tv" are apparently forgetting that the small tv they need won't cost as nearly much as said 65 inch behemoth. try shopping around.

    4. I get a package deal here (n. tx) 6MB internet + digital cable + 1 premium channel + HD DVR for $75/ month. I don't think you will find a better deal short of just not getting service. however, i had to research and i had to ASK. They won't hand you a deal on a plate. and i'm sorry, if all i had to watch were the free OTA channels, i wouldn't bother. in fact we just got cable again after a year off where we did nothing but netflix.

whatever. this kneejerk reaction by people who don't have an HDTV and/or don't have cable/dish sounds like luddism(sp?) or sour grapes to me. if you don't want or need it, or can't afford or don't want to pay for it, that's great. just try dropping the holier than thou 'tude.
