As far as your description of group psychology and religion those same points can be applied to any social group from climate scientists to the local electricians union. They are not problems specific to religion they are problems that manifest in all human social interactions.

I agree with you my point is that you just can't say we won't discuss intelligent design because it's full of shit. If it is wrong or bad science or whatever it needs to be discussed and and an argument needs to be made as to why it is wrong. Granted the true believers won't care but other people will listen. There is nothing wrong with healthy debate on a topic even if you are radically opposed to your opponent. Avoiding the debate or demeaning your opponent doesn't help anyone and it doesn't advance understanding.

I agree, if you go there for one you need to go there for both. But to me creationism doesn't belong in science class because it is not a scientific theory. My position is that if you are going to teach a scientific theory you need to cover the weaknesses of that theory from a scientific perspective. I am not for teaching intelligent design or whatever during science class unless it can be presented from a scientific perspective and if that case it needs to be presented flaws and all. I just don't think evolution should be presented as a scientific law.

I hope realize that Galileo (apparently the poster boy of the science vs religion debate) was educated at Camaldolese Monastery outside Florence. Without the religious institutions who ended up persecuting him he may never have advanced our understanding of the universe as much as he had.

Science and religion have always been intertwined and the conflict between them has been very beneficial.

You should also know about the inadequacies or weaknesses in the scientific theories you are teaching. It might inspire a future scientist to study and resolve those inadequacies. Teaching intelligent design as science on par with evolution is bad but avoiding the weaknesses or unresolved issues in evolution is just as bad.

How is a scientist calling theological matters voodoo and different then preacher calling evolution BS? Both science and religion/faith/whatever serve a purpose in peoples lives. Why be so hostile. How is having confidence in an unproven scientific theory any different that having faith in god? How is the scientific any different than a religious ritual? Both are performed by anointed individuals according to prescribed methods.

I agree but having a litmus test to see who is qualified to talk about what subject isn't a good idea. While I think the evangelical movement is disturbing I don't think their views should be silenced. It is by argumentation and refutation that the public's understanding of scientific and philosophical matters is expanded.

Putting theological doctrine to the test is all well and good when it is theologians that are involved in weighing the evidence to see what fits and what doesn't.

With the theory of evolution, you have scientists trying to make theological decisions.

Because linux is built and looks like it's free. Also, none of the apps I use have native support. Sure there are open source alternatives but besides the learning curve I still wouldn't get the level of integration and productivity I get with my current OS.

Now on my servers I run Linux because it's a good fit. When I need to get work done on my computer I use OSX when I need my computer to do work for me I use Linux. Plus with virtualization I can run XP and Ubuntu on OSX for the odd jobs for which I might need those on my desktop.

For me iLife and it's media browser, direct printing to pdf, xcode, and the level of integration between the OS and the other apps I use are worth that $500 logo. I'd rather use a workstation to get my work done and not commodity parts in commodity PCs (I'm looking at you Dell).

I know that from talking to linux zealots I can find an app to replace my existing Mac apps under linux. But when I tell them I also need an integrated workflow comprising all those apps I just get a blank stare for a few seconds and then like a lightbulb going off each and every time they each sputter forth with the phrase "scripting, you could write some scripts". I pay the X amount of dollars for my Mac because it works for me and I don't have to work for it.

(Note: The sputtering Linux zealots used in this example may not reflect the speaking habits of all Linux users users and is used here primarily for literary imagery. Please oh please my zealots remember that I am your friend from the west.)

After doing tons of research the best gear i've found for use and abuse is:
Laptop case: Booq Boa with Vyper sleeve
Camera case: Crumpler Karachi outpost (carried this through thailand, burma, and India) They make excellent stuff.
Luggage: Osprey Meridian Series (carried these through most of asia with only one problem. The zipper pulled away from the fabric. Sent it back to Osprey and they replaced the bag with a new one at no charge and my bag was almost 2 years old at the time)
Good bags can make a trip more enjoyable and hassle free.
