I thought the folks on here at slashdot were intelligent. Do you honestly think there won't be an option when installing Windows 8, which interface you'd like to use as the default??? It's a no-brainer that you'll be able to use the more traditional desktop format while having this touch friendly interface (lacking in windows 7 and often missed) as an option to switch to. It's the only way this can succeed and I'm sure the guys over at Microsoft know that.

I have kids and I agree that commercials are annoying BUT this is one example of government trying to legislate EVERYTHING. The government should not try to be the ones who control everything. Some company makes a loud, obnoxious commercial and wakes up my kid, you better believe I'll remember who's commercial it was and will NOT be buying their product. THAT'S how to deal with this kind of thing, not a new law.

It IS buggy if it can't even remember that it wasn't able to determine my position and let any apps asking for that information that it is unavailable. Even if I completely turn off location services in the settings, apps continue to ask if it can use my location! Very obnoxious.

You make a good point. I'm really looking forward to some devices based on Creative's Zii Plaszma platform. It has everything I want in a PMP (if they add a phone it's a nice addition). It has wifi, gps, an sd card slot, hardware acceleration, an hd camera, hd video output and hopefully will run android 2.0 (and later, better versions). It justs needs to be developed a little more quickly than it is right now.

I use Paint.Net all the time because it is lightweight and intuitive but it is much more a substitute for Fireworks than Photoshop. It has some big annoyances that prevent it from being useful in many situations. I don't know if there's a technical term for this but if you create a text field and your text happens to go off the screen as you're typing it, then that text is gone and not just hidden and intact like in photoshop.

I don't know how it works for iPhone apps using GPS but I have Verizon Wireless and I'm not paying an extra $10 a month for VZNavigator when I have a $100 TomTom that does the job perfectly already. If I didn't have a TomTom I would get one since, with some basic math, it "pays for itself" in 10 months. I also have a handheld garmin gps that I use for geocaching. That said, if I could use a smartphone with Verizon without having to pay $30 a month for a data plan and that had a standalone gps receiver not locked out by Verizon, that I could use with 3rd party software from Garmin or TomTom, I would probably do that instead of the handheld but still use the TomTom in the car.

...it's a shame so many people are turned off Linux because their work requires exactly this or that application.

That's not the only reason people are turned off by Linux. Until Ubuntu came along it was pretty much a techie only OS. If you have to know command line scripting to get an OS running or to get a piece of hardware working with your computer then it's a showstopper for most people. Ubuntu has changed that for the most part. Maybe they weren't the first but they are certainly the most public. So now the choices for most people are: OSX (Common perception: expensive), Ubuntu (Common perception: a poor man's Windows), and Windows (Common perception: there are other choices?)

I've used a bunch of different CMS and Blogging frameworks (as well as wiki engines) and I find Joomla to be one of the most confusing to actually work with but also the one I keep hoping will get its act together in the usability arena because I see the potential it has if I could just figure it out. Unfortunately I don't have the time to really figure it out so I use DotNetNuke, which has it's own issues, but is very intuitive for the most part and I can hand off to end users with barely any explanation beyond a login name and password. I would love to be able to use Joomla as it seems faster and more stable but I just can't spare the time to puzzle out HOW to use it.

I have to agree here. I have an aged thinkpad with a netgear wireless card that I've installed several different os's on including windows 98, 2000 and xp and suse and ubuntu linux. By far the easiest was ubuntu. It was the only os that installed working drivers for the wireless card without any intervention. I could probably be considered a windows fanboy (I am one of the few that actually LIKES Vista. not everything but a lot about it). I will probably not be an all the time Linux user ever but I think it's fantastic for older hardware or for people that don't know how to maintain a secure and well-oiled windows machine (jump all over that one).

By the way, I ran the live cd on my old Thinkpad T22 PIII 1.2GHz and it was beautiful. It had drivers and utilities that Windows XP Pro SP2 didn't have, notably onscreen volume and lcd brightness indicators. It is also the first Linux distro I've tried that found the right driver for my wireless card and connected to my wireless network without a hitch. I was very impressed. I'm not very knowledgeable about Linux but this version makes me want to make the jump from Windows.

The real niche for online photo adjustment is when ordering prints. I have photoshop, picasa, blah blah blah, but when I just want to order some prints from a company like kodakgallery or snapfish its much easier and quicker to upload the photo as-is then make a couple quick adjustments with their basic tools like darken/brighten and crop. This, as opposed to editing it myself locally, which I might do on occasion but my wife definitely wouldn't/couldn't. The online tools are good for her...easy.
