I read the article. The summary is out of sequence wrt the article. They transmit ~36TB/yr back to Wisconsin whereupon processing expands it threefold. The bandwidth issue is with the 36TB.
Given how poor the Netflix rating engine is surely their money'd be better spent hiring a programmer? I mean, how about not suggesting to me the movie I've just watched? (Low hanging fruit?)
No seriously. I live here, you had incredible good luck if you got free WiFi. Most Germans I speak to are amazed when they find out the rest of the planet gets this stuff for free.
I have both Vodafone callya and Blau. Honestly vodafone (and O2) is ridiculously expensive without a contract. Simyo http://www.simyo.de/ is another cheap alternative. All the cheap ones are pretty much the same price and adequate quality. The reason Vodafone et al get away with having the expensive prices is because Germans have this strange notion of paying extra for imagined 'quality' (the reasoning is along the lines 'it's more expensive so it must be good')
Actually very few places in Germany have free Wifi. The going rate is €8 per hour! (If you are asking about it, they call it Wlan)
I agree about waiting until you arrive though. I think you'll have a lot of problems buying before you travel unless you sign up for a special tourist phone network that costs an outrageous amount.
Unfortunately, Eircom are the only realistic option for broadband connections for the vast majority of users in Ireland. And don't forget, if they are successful at identifying downloaders those are exactly the users an ISP can live without; they use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth. Eircom will be left with cash-cow customers, like grandma.
I have to agree. I've just spent a month travelling with the Eee 701 and anything larger would be a nightmare. I'm considering getting the 901 for the bigger screen but I won't go to the 1000 because of the size of the unit. The 701 form factor can be slipped into a shoulder bag like a book.
Americans are certainly not particularly stupid. But most of their technical and scientific expertise was brought into the US by German scientists after WW2. Hence the sudden explosion in US nobel winners and a decline in German ones.
I keep them in a box. If you leave them plugged in they will continue to use electricity even when they are not charging (or even connected to) a device.
Very true. But with the level of criminal activity in the form of botnets, etc., I'd be happy to at least have that half way solution to begin with. (and yes I know most traffic doesn't travel through hijacked bots but there are plenty of other dodgy nodes out there)
With a popular site like Pirate Bay behind it. This might actually catch on. If we all had to use an encrypted protocol to communicate with Google all internet traffic would quickly switch to that format.
I'm surprised at your reaction. I understand you are a diligent employee and don't like to see your talents effectively put out to pasture for 4 weeks but this is standard practice in many industries. Basically in any job that involves 'knowledge'.
It's slightly unusual that you're still required to come in every day but I guess they could ask you to do low level IT tasks for the duration.
If you were in a job where IP is more of an issue you'd be lucky to even get to clear your desk. Your belongings would be shipped to you.
Take the opportunity to enjoy life (one friend of mine took up jogging). And prepare yourself for your new job.
Actually, I've been trialling the release candidates of this version of Freenet (like you I lost interest in earlier versions) and it's very good.
While I'm sure there must be kiddie porn there somewhere I didn't notice it or stumble across it accidentally.
As for the speed, it's much better than previous versions. I would go so far as to say early DSL speeds (1Mb) once it's up and running for an hour or two.
Most of the advice you are receiving, while good and well intentioned, does not seem to match the situation you are facing.
You receive emails from students (and perhaps other organisations) and at least one member of your committee needs to take action on each individual email. If you insist on using a joint account: create an individual folder for each of the committee members, when an email comes in either an employed secretary or whoever from the committee happens to be reading the messages at the time should read the message and decide which committee member should (by job description) or is most likely to (if you guys are really disorganised) be the correct person to deal with that particular message. The message should be moved into the relevant committee member's folder and when they login they can see it and act on it.
If you are an organisation which employs a secretary then there's no real need for you to even employ folders. Mail comes into the central account and instead of moving it into a committee member's folder the secretary should instead forward it to the committee member's separate email account. This allows the committee member to re-forward the message to another member if they need help on it and it will (usefully) appear as an unread message to the other committee member.
At the risk of provoking flame bait, I have to say if you guys have problems with this system then email is the least of your organisational worries. Speaking as someone who's involved in similar activities, this idea is based around demarcation of responsibilites (or members' areas of interests if you're a more ad-hoc organisation).
The download seems to be Georestricted. Is this a US only product from Mozilla, or a mistake on the configuration on Play store?

Why are they processing it in place if the processed data requires more bandwidth and they have a transmission bandwidth problem?
What did I miss?

It's "vay-lan" actually or "veh-lan" depending on how you pronounce your English.

However, if you're only interested in using the phone and sms the rates while roaming within EU countries are limited. It's only 13c per text message!

I find http://www.blau.de/ quite good. Aldi (http://www.aldi-nord.de/aldi_aldi_talk_95.html) are also good.
"...which the US is co-developing." Slightly biased don't you think? It's a global project with a lot of nations contributing major bucks.
Mine was the same, I was completely locked out. I guess they lied on their press release.

How do you find the 10" for travel and portability? Surely you might as well get a full powered laptop once you get to that size.

In fact, Ireland consistently has the highest satisfaction rating with membership of the European Union of all the 27 member countries.
I have to agree. How did this make the homepage? Shouldn't this go in Slashdot Idle?

He's still an employee at present. This isn't a situation where a former employee has data access rights.
