  1. Re:A good chuck of that 52% is corporate policy. on Internet Users Not Updating Browser · · Score: 1

I run Portable Firefox and Portable OpenOffice on my dumb-ass corporate machine. That works like a charm and the awfulbar can be modded to be less awful by setting its history lines to zero in about:config.

One reason I use FF is 'cause it works better with many of the corporate applications than the required IE6!

One sensible comment in a sea of drivel. Aluminium skinned Airstream campers last forever, but they still need the occasional overhaul.

Today, we stopped 4 lanes of traffic to let a mama duck and her 10 chicks cross. I noticed a puff of smoke from the tires of the car in front and stopped next to him. A guy in the opposite lane noticed the commotion and stopped as well and flagged the other lane to a stop. The only problem is that this was a good 10km and many roads from the river.

Actually, the car companies have tried everything already at least once. Electric cars were popular for a period of more than 30 years, 100 years ago. So as far as GM and Ford are concerned, there isn't anything new, it is just a matter of warming over the same old shit every few decades and if they are lucky, it may end up a little better than the previous time.

  8. Missing the point - charity == tax relief on Linguistic Problems of GPL Advocacy · · Score: 1

Most(?) people completely miss the point. The main motivation behind both GPL and BSD licenses is to avoid paying tax.

For example, SW Company develops a useful program. SW Company donates said program to a charity controlled by said SW Company, and write itself a tax receipt for umpteen gazillion dollars. SW Company can now avoid paying tax for umpteen years.

When something doesn't make sense, follow the money.

  17. Oil price didn't go up - Dollar went down on Higher Oil Prices Are Starting To Bring Jobs Home · · Score: 1

The oil price didn't move much in other currencies. The USD has devalued. Effectively all Americans have lost about 30% of their worth and are now being paid two thirds of what they used to be paid. That is what is making it possible to bring jobs back to the USA, not just transport costs. Once the USD has devalued by another 20% or so, the balance will be restored.
