If you compare it to the Wii (games aside), the controller is (more or less) all that the 360 doesn't have
The 360 Core is the closest competition to the Wii in terms of price. The 360 has more power going for it (and can play DVD movies), but let's compare what you don't get with the core, and you DO get with the Wii.
The Unique controler you touched on.
Wi-fi built in. No adapter needed.
Free online multiplayer.
Save games (the Wii has internal flash memory for the Saves, with the core you need to buy an additional memory card or HDD)
SD-Slot for slideshows/ video.
A game included (with 5 casual games in the package)
Hardware Based Backwords compatibility (100% BC with GC games, controllers and Memory cards)
The Wii has everything you need 'out of the box' to start playing (for $250). The 360 Core, does not. It may look cheaper on the shelf, but once you add it together you're over $400 to play a game anyway.

The only game coming out this Year for Sony that comes close to Zelda: TP, is FFXII. That's for what system again? Sony's launch lineup is weak, and they are trying to sell it with games slated to come out in 2007 (at the earliest).
Even if the port was identical (on the Wii) to the Digital port on the Back of the GC, you would be sacrificing sound. The GC had 2 ports (An analog, and Digital out) initially, and the analog cables were still needed for sound. (Don't know why they did it that way, but meh... they did.)
I have them, and they are great cables. (F-Zero in particular is SWEET) I only hope Monster or Nintendo has Wii Component cables at launch, otherwise I'll have to make choice between 'Zelda GC in 480p' or 'Zelda Wii in 480i and 16:9 ' Grrrrrrrrr....
The "shipped" vs "sold" distinction is one I've heard before, and one that reaks if idiocy.
It's just the distinction between having your stock in the hands of customers, or the combined total off all units sent from the factory (including those sitting on the shelf). A retailer will stock up when they sell out of previous stock, before Holidays, or in the event of a major game release, they will bring more in house expecting to sell more. This will cause the # of units sold vs. shipped to fluctuate by at least 10%. Do you think there are fewer than 2 million PSP's sitting on the shelf currently?
Launch week for the PSP in North America Sony launched with 1,000,000 units available. Within 7 days they sold 600,000. There IS a difference significant enough to clarify between the number of units shipped and sold.
"The Gamecube has about half of it's library on two discs"
Half? I have nearly 30 GC games, and only a handful that are on 2 disks. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Metal Gear Solid, RE4, & Tales of Symphonia.
"I can't think of any Xbox games that needed more then one disc."
The funny thing though is there are plenty of X-box games that are 1.5 gig or less also. Disk size is less important than Disk Speed at this point. Load screens FTL.
I do agree about cut scenes though. We are at the point now that if RE4 (GC version) can do that level of 'cinematics' in game, then there is absolutely no need to do them for next gen.
The issue though is maintaining healthy margins. Most places (best buy/ circuit city etc...) Make shit margins on stuff like iPods. They sell them, but there is very little profit per unit. The Accessories however...
That's how they A) get people in the store, and B) make money.
similar graphics to the GC, while being $100 more expensive
Actually both the GC and X-Box graphics were superior. The hardware was there, if a developer didn't use it then you get a misrepresentation. Some developers got lazy *Cough* EA *Cough* and developed a product for the PS2 and ported it to the GC without enhancements. They made it for the PS2 then ported to the GC because the PS2 was the weaker of the 2, and the GC could handle anything a PS2 could do and more.
I don't understand how people paid a premium for a weaker system, but they still did, and in droves so the software developers went for the one with the larger install base. If you don't believe the GC has better graphics, then play RE4 on the PS2, then play it on the GC.
I can't wait to get my PS3 and Blu-Ray movies, but my TV only accepts Coax cable. Please tell me there will at least be a 1st party cable available at launch....
To a point I agree. More publishers took a chance on the PS2, because it had a larger install base. In fact If Guitar Hero and Kingdom hearts were multiplatform, I wouldn't have a PS2 now. The PS2 has a larger variety of titles since it was the market leader, however the Gamecube does have more 'Arcade Style' titles than PS2 or X-Box, which make it easy to pickup and play with just about anyone.
This gen broke down to: PS2 - for single player games, GameCube - For arcade style games, and X-Box for Online games.
why the Linux community hasn't gotten excited that the PS3 runs on Linux.
This may sound like a nit pick, but 'the PS3 runs Linux'. It does not run on Linux. There is actually a pretty big differnce between those two statements.
The reason most people aren't that excited is that they expect it to be as significant as Linux was on the PS2.
One thing I haven't heard many wonder about though is "lifespan for the Wii-mote". How much abuse will it take before it has a problem. This might be an issue Nintendo will still have to address.
Nintendo products have a good history of not only lasting long, but taking lots of abuse. Look up on you tube or something where a gamecube gets pulled down a dirt road for a while. The case is smashed to hell, but they brought it back, and it played. Also if you noticed in the E3 video where they Demo Wii-Tennis, they added a lanyard to it to prevent you from accidentially throwing the wiimote at the TV.
What I'm surprised about is nobody is questioning the PS3's Blu-Ray read spead. I don't care if it's in 1080p, the second I see a load screen, next gen fails.
And getting ports from ubiquitous companies like EA is not exactly the same as stealing Square from Sony as they did to them ten years ago.
Although that may be true. Next gen costs go up, which by defaults means there will be fewer exclusives as companies try to hedge their bets, and recoup costs. Sony will feel the bite as they lose their exclusives. Their strongest selling titles come from EA, Square-Enix, and Rockstar, and just as People buy Nintendo for Zelda, there are people who buy Sony strictly for Final Fantasy (the core series). But if FF is on the 360 and/or the Wii...
It depends on how they do it. I wouldn't mind them offering GC games with more feautures (such as Wiimote controls) and Widescreen support (or even multiple games bundled), for a reasonable price. From a development stand point it wouldn't be difficult.
I would re-buy Metroid Prime 1 & 2 for that for say $20. Even better if it was on 1 disk.
"...is why Sony doesn't have any playable titles yet."
Because it's too close to launch, and they know the graphics aren't nearly what they thought they should be by now (See Killzone 2 trailer). The MGS4 trailer is nice, but it's a CG trailer with no Hud or actual gameplay. My PS1 can play a comparable quality CG trailer.
I'm Still waiting on those 'Real time Toy Story level graphics' on my PS2 Ken...
I know Coorelation =/= causation. Maybe he had a change of heart, but it is worth noting that comment was made before his studio was purchased by Microsoft.

The DS has sold more units than the PSP has shipped worldwide.

Why not buy a few monster cables, and have them lying around the house 'just in case' ....

Most first/second party GameCube games don't have any load screens, so it is possible using a fast drive, and pre-load techniques.

I'd Just like to point out that 'GameBoy' and 'PlayStation' are both terrible names, and they seemed to do alright despite of it.
'I'll take the one with a DVD9 drive' for $200 less.
I'm not saying 'they can do no wrong', but Yamauchi retiring was a good thing for their company.

Sure it did. In fact you couldn't buy the Linux DVD seperately, you needed to buy the Kit with it included.
Even the USB was mangled so standard devices don't work.
Which leads me to question how usefull PS3 Linux will be...
If you want a Linux based PC, you can get them for under $100.
Dude, That's their business model!
