..that this _is_ just an attack on Google? Yes, it is somewhat plausible that insurgents could be or are using Google Earth to pinpoint attacks on coalition forces in Iraq, but that doesn't mean it's true. Hasn't anyone considered the fact that this is their _home_? I don't know about you, but if someone invaded _my_ city, I wouldn't need Google Earth to blow them up.
Be careful not to place too much of the blame on us programmers. Most of these crazy "business logic" equations were created by some math genius in another department. Since most of these equations mean nothing to programmers, we make sure we're typing them in correctly, since there's no way we would ever recognize any type of mistake. Most of the time the problem lies with the math guy, who was too lazy to carry a remainder, or who thought the equation was good enough being precise to four decimal places.
Isn't that the point of getting a job in the first place? To earn enough money so that you don't have to work anymore, and can just do what you want? It's like winning the lottery but with more work and less solicitors.
To reinforce your point 2, Sony was claiming for months before launch that the PS3 "will have" Oblivion as a launch title. Lo-and-behold, there is no Oblivion. When you think about it, that's actually pretty ridiculous, since the game has been ported to several other systems already.
A lot of people seem to be confused with the difference between MMO-style games like WoW, and MMOish-style games like Guild Wars. When you think about it, Guild Wars isn't really an MMO, it's just an online-only game with "virtual" chat rooms. It definitely compares to D2 online, which had many chat rooms, but the actual, instanced game was separate. I'm leaning towards the "pay-once" idea.
I can see myself and other programmers finally getting into robotics through the iRobot Create. Being a software programmer, I haven't had much experience with circuitry and hardware programming and thusly, haven't had much of a foothold in robotics to get seriously involved with them. With the Create kit (since the SDK is based in C/C++), I think this would be a great opportunity for us to easily get into robotics as a hobby. Exciting!
One of the many theories for GW I've heard, has been that the polar caps are actually shifting, not shrinking. I'm curious to see Russia's records. While all the US bureaucrats are shaking in their Armani suits claiming GW is happening, maybe Russia's been getting colder? I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case, since the US is notorious for blowing things out of proportion. "Domestic" and "international" seem to be interchangeable these days.
I'm going to drive out of the city into a more rural area. You could always hop on a bus to the edge of the city, or drive if you have a car. Maybe you'd have more luck there?
A paradigm shift is when you change your way of thinking about something to get a different perspective on it. Not a textbook definition, but that's because I didn't Google it. Learned it in college, actually. Sorry to disappoint, stranger.
I believe that's called the Gaia theory, or at least you've explained something that resembles it to me. For those of you just tuning in, it's the theory that the Earth is an entire organism, and therefor has many of it's own means to reproduce.. either by spreading a bacterial "trail" through space, or by evolving and supporting humans until we can travel to other planets and terraform them to be "Earth-like."
It may sound like hippy-science, but it is still a valid theory.
1. a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, esp. one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature.
2. stories or matter of this kind: realm of myth.
3. any invented story, idea, or concept: His account of the event is pure myth.
4. an imaginary or fictitious thing or person.
5. an unproved or false collective belief that is used to justify a social institution.
Going from definition 3, which I assume this "journalist" is also using, the PS3's failure would have to be completely made-up. This is, in fact, quite the opposite. The PS3's failure has been a calculated one, gathered from both the facts given to us from Sony's stupid PR team, and the concepts of what have made successful consoles in the past.
It's been tried and tested with all the other MMOs. When you give the players such an open system like a skill-based system, the developers have exponentially more work on their hands. They have to make sure all the combinations are viable gaming options. Nevermind the balance for PvP systems. Skill-based systems are way easier to exploit, as opposed to class-based systems, where the developers have direct control over what the players can be, and what they cannot be. It's a hard balance to strike, though, since players in a class system often feel as though they're being oppressed, but every game needs a structure, and skill-based structures are too close to chaos.
Us Canuks make all the gadgets, and you Americans go out and "field test" them for us.

Well, not so much my browser, as it was me hitting the back button *on* the browser. So, it was the browser's fault, but mostly my fault by proxy.
..and my browser totally posted this under the wrong parent, thus nullifying the funniness of this comment with a +2 bonus.

Why, did someone take your stapler?

How exactly did this make the cut? I mean, maybe it's a slow news day, but posting blatantly false news stories is pretty dumb.
Umm, yeah. See, that's almost exactly what I said, except you wasted about 20 minutes of time doing it.

It's a buzz-word. It's meant to get people's attention. Like so:
Web Version 2.0!! Buzz Words!! Paradigm Shifts!!
Forgot my ..
You know what would go really well this? How about a brand new 16GB USB dongle?

You sure it has nothing to do with having "more than 4,000 patents on their ink formulations and cartridge design"?
