I don't know about Quebec, but in France most of those names have both a male and a female form: Jean/Jeanne, Jules/Julie, Michel/Michele, Noel/Noelle, Patrice/Patricia, Rene/Renee.
Jolie is obviously a girl name since it's the feminine form of the adjective "joli". I can't imagine a french speaker calling a boy Jolie.
Sacha and Sidney are unisex names, but they're not french names so to speak. Sacha is originally a russian name and Sidney an english name.

Actually, it could work really well with french names. The only french unisex name I can think of is Dominique. Except for that one, all names have slight variations, like Frederic for a boy and Frederique for a girl, even if they are pronounced the same. Of course, if the user chooses to shorten his/her name to "Fred", it can be problematic.

So it's $20 per year for a 6 GB online space. That you can only use in conjonction with Google's services.

I don't know about your ISP, but mine provides me with a free online storage of 10 GB, accessible via FTP and HTTP (with PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL support).

So, yes, I would say that $20 a year is too expensive.

I absolutely agree. Any person who spend much time on a computer should learn touch-typing. The benefits are so huge that it doesn't look like an option to me.

I first learned US, French and Swiss-French disposition (I live in France, but Swiss-French was the standard in Luxembourg, where I worked). Then I discovered English Dvorak, but I felt no real benefit using it, since most of the texts I had to type were in French. By chance, I discovered that a French Dvorak disposition existed. Today I use the French disposition for basic keyboard interaction, and Dvorak French when I have long texts to type.

I never bothered to buy a real Dvorak keyboard, and just switch the disposition with a keyboard shortcut. Actually, I bought a spray can of white paint, and painted the keys so they're all blank now. The only thing telling me which disposition is currently in use, whenever I have a doubt, is the little flag in my menu bar (I use OS X). Needless to say most of the people who sit at my computer are baffled by this blank keyboard, but I find it more aesthetic this way.

    Same for me.
Each time I get a new mac, it takes only an hour or two to let the machine copy every application, account and preference from my old mac to the new one. And sure enough, I instantly feel at home on the new machine, except with more power under the hood.

And if I'm too excited to wait for as long as one hour, I can simply boot from my external firewire drive, which is a regularly updated backup of my main HD.

Wrong. Advertisers can use English words if they like, but they have to provide a translation for these words somewhere on the ad (often in a footnote in small print).

I've tested the Coherency feature with Ubuntu, but it doesn't work. I guess this feature works only if you install the Parallels Tools in the virtualized OS. These tools also allow features like drag and drop of files from an OS to another, or the smooth transition of the mouse pointer between the OSes. And AFAIK, this installation of Parallels Tools is possible on Windows only.

Hopefully we will see the Parallels Tools available for popular Linux distributions.

I don't know in which country you used to be a bartender, but in France where I live, the bars don't work this way. You sit down at a table, and a garçon comes, take your order and brings it to you. As far as I've seen while travelling around, it's also the case in Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg. The only exceptions are the british or irish pubs.

In France, the most interesting ADSL offer comes from an ISP called Free. For 29.90 euros a month (US$ 37,20), you get a 25 Mbps/1024 Kbps ADSL 2+ internet connection. But even more interesting are the services that come with the offer : a phone line with free unlimited calls to any land line in France or in 28 other countries, TV over ADSL with 100+ free channels and hundreds more available à la carte, Video on Demand, and a box which is kind of a mix between a DVR and an Apple iTV, connected to the main modem-routeur box via MIMO wifi. Free's future plans for 2007 include the deployment of a fiber optics network in Paris, providing a speed of 50 Mbps, still for 29.90 euros. It's also the only company in France to own a national licence for wimax.

Oh, and since we're on /. and the vast majority of us are computer geeks, maybe you should also consider this : in France you can have what is probably the best offer for Internet providing in the western world. From what I've seen, only Japan and Korea can top that.

For 29.90 euros per month, you get triple play : 25 Mbit/s internet access (with 1024 Kbps upload), a phone line with free calls to 28 foreign countries (including USA), and television (100+ free channels, and VoD). Plus a TV box that can record shows, much like a Tivo, and stream video from and to your computer through MIMO wifi.

That may sound strange and out of proportions, but the internet service providing is what I would miss the most if I had to move from France.
