well, about the "download a car" thing.. maybe someday, with rapid prototyping. of course, that'd just mean we get the same debate all over again.. with the odds stacked even more against us since we'd actually be saving quite a lot doing so.

exactly the same debate, even, since it'd also open up the possibility for geeks without a factory of their own to design their own car. does this remind anyone of how open source gets criticized?

i've only read about that one with sound. because at some points, two "tops" of a sine wave would meet, it would have the volume of both added together. at other distances away from eachother, one positive top meets a negative top, and they cancel eachother out.

since the wavelengths of visible light are far shorter than those of sounds we can hear, it'd be pretty impressive if you could see that with your own eyes. i'm not even sure if it applies to light, but.. not ruling that one out. just saying any effect you see would be miniscule.

just to confirm his point: i use linux and windows evenly. slightly skewed towards windows. i don't run into any trouble on either one unless i do something stupid. i know the exact definition of "stupid" in this case too. with firefox instead of internet explorer and avast antivirus guarding my files, the only way for viruses to gain entry is either by mom's outlook express mail-checking (which she handles somewhat responsibly) or from dangerous programs i downloaded by torrent somehow. avast even warns me of both, so.. yeah.

on the other hand, i run windows xp on one pc and vista on another, and no windows 7. can't say much about that, but it seems fairly obvious to me: windows' flakiness is because it's users are dumb, not it's programmers. the smart ones can choose between windows, linux and mac os, and the dumb ones are more or less forced to use windows. or mac os, sometimes.
