  1. Great, more timebombs on Can Microsoft Really Convince People To Subscribe To Software? · · Score: 3, Interesting

If you do signup for an MS Office subscription, make sure you uninstall the software before the subscription expires. Some of the most badly-borked systems I have encountered in the past three years have had a pre-release version of Office installed that went beyond its timebomb date. I expect similar badness to occur with systems where an Office subscription has expired.

  2. Re:No redundancy on Three Mile Island Shuts Down After Pump Failure · · Score: 1

That to me implies that the normal situation is that all 4 pumps must be running, and they are not there for redundancy at all. If not, why have the other 3 pumps there at all?

The answer to that question changed considerably when the Fukushima incident occurred. The entire nuclear power industry is held accountable for the failings of even the most reckless of its ranks.

  3. Power Vacuum on US Military Tested the Effects of a Nuclear Holocaust On Beer · · Score: 3, Funny

The world will be dearly in need of leadership after a nuclear war. I think these tests need to be repeated with politicians to see how they fare.

  4. Re:WARNING: BPA lining in CANNED FOOD as well !! on Is the Can Worse Than the Soda? · · Score: 2

How many of the canned foods you eat are as acidic as soda? Also food cans are vacuum sealed whereas carbonated soda cans are pressurized. At a guess I would suspect the lining in the soda can is more likely to break down over time. Perhaps there is something to those freshness dates that have been stamped on the cans for the past few years after all?

  5. Doesn't look well suited for manufacturing on Meet iRobot Founder Rodney Brooks's New Industrial Bot, Baxter · · Score: 1

While these are only prototypes they seem to be very slow and utilize the simplest of end effectors ("hands"). What they are working on seems better suited to household use, as in helping the elderly or disabled with basic domestic tasks.

  6. Let it be so on Are Commercial Games Finally Going To Make It To Linux? · · Score: 1

The best way to get Linux on a large number of desktops would be a desktop Android distro. And what would the killer app be that would make everyone want an Android desktop? Why, Steam of course.

  7. Acquired data vs. archived data set on Exposing the Machinery of the Resistome · · Score: 2

The project represents a 'Big Data' problem of the highest order.

Before or after de-duplication of the data? Before, yes obviously but if that is still the case after de-duplication then gaining much knowledge from this experiment may prove to be a fools errand.

  8. Re:I have the desire! on China's Alibaba To Outsell Amazon, eBay Combined · · Score: 4, Insightful

Most of the EBay sellers I buy from anymore ship directly from Asia. I doubt purchasing from Alibaba would be much different, so long as the seller accepted payment from well vetted processors such as Dwolla, Square, AmazonPayments or even those PayPal creeps.

  10. Call me oldschool on Ask Slashdot: Best Computer For a 7-Year Old? · · Score: 1

I really miss the days when a computer booted into a shell rather than a GUI. Even launching an application required a modicum of knowledge. Granted, expecting a seven year old to learn shell commands, even something as simple as 'load "*",8,1', might be a bit of stretch. If Mom and Dad booted up Logo and let him draw some pictures algorithmically that would probably be better than simply setting him loose in a point-and-click world.

  11. Massive infection on Knocking Infected PCs Off the Internet · · Score: 1

With a decent camera and WiFi it seems like an old smart phone could be hacked into a rather sweet nannycam. Or with GPS + WiFi you could attach it to your car to track where your teenage children are really going when they need it to go study at a friends house. Thank goodness my parents weren't into smartphone hacking ;-)

So you think UEFI boot will be harder to root than iOS or Android devices? Look at the custom chipset in the XBox if you want to see what it takes to make a consumer product moderately well protected against being rooted. I have seen nothing in the secure boot specifications that looks as daunting. What scares the heck out of me is the likelyhood UEFI secure boot will end up being compromised without detection and critical infrastructure will be owned before anyone detects it.
