The UK is in the EU and has been for a very long time, making the second half of your sentence non-sensical. Last time I was in England they were still using the Pound. Although they are a member of the EU, they haven't adopted all of their policies it seems. *shrug*
This is no different than a man cheating on their wife, hanging out in bars/clubs/work, watching "the game", or hanging out with the boys instead of spending time with their wife (attractive or not). I don't think games are to blame, but simply another means to ignore/escape from the wife. Isn't that one reason Lance Armstrong got divorced? His whole life revolved around racing - the wife and kids were just an added bonus. Maybe he has an addiction too?
As I said, I don't think it's the video games. There is probably something wrong with the relationship anyway, so replace gaming with one of the examples I stated above and it would be the same result most likely - divorce. I've met many more women that fall in those categories compared to the "video game widow" category.
Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George wants to keep his high score in a Frogger arcade machine and rigs up a car battery so he can unplug it and move it elsewhere.
Because gods know that end-users never lie, or that you'd get an end-user who doesn't know what he's talking about.
Think from the other guy's perspective. Wasn't flaming the tech or anything. I've been on his side before (will never do it again). He was very nice. I did all the steps he asked of me. I just wish I didn't have to waste 3 hours to get the conclusion that I already knew.
Now, the tech that insisted he had to remote into my laptop to verify that my battery had gone bad and would no longer retain a charge kinda pissed me off...
I have an Insipiron e1705 and just had my 7900GS replaced. They had me boot into the special Dell Utility partition to trouble-shoot and determine that it was indeed a bad video card (of course they didn't believe me when I told them it was bad). Anyway, that utility is OS agnostic, so I don't see what the big deal is.
Maybe someone just got in touch with a bad/lazy/stupid tech? (of course I didn't RTFA)
I would disagree. I've seen lots of Dell in larger shops (200+ servers - as an arbitrary number). I do a lot of work with VMWare specifically and the PE6850s are very popular given they can fill them up with 2GB DIMMs to get 32GB RAM, which is exponentially cheaper than 32GB RAM with 4GB DIMMs.
I haven't seen much Sun x86 stuff around, but definitely a good bit of HP gear. Their newer C class blade system is pretty slick. I haven't seen a lot of IBM equipment out there, but I know a lot of shops use it. EMC seems to be the SAN of choice from what I have seen as well (Clariion over DMX mostly).
I'm not a Dell fan boy, but they are definitely in the "tech sector." They have pretty large Professional Services Organization - although I am yet to be impressed with anyone coming out of that group so far.
I consider Dell as much a part of the Tech sector as I do Kenmore or Whirlpool. I've yet to walk into a data center that sports Kenmore or Whirlpool...
Same here. I'm not even going to get up super early on the day the shipment comes and wait outside.
They're still hard to find in Austin, and that's with calling every electronics store, toy store, target, walmart, and costco in town. Most don't know or won't tell you when shipments arrive, probably because they don't want even more people waiting outside their doors.
I have just ordered my wii, when I used a wii tracker to find online deals. WalMart has a bundle that comes with an extra wiimote, and accessory of your choice (I picked nunchuck) and three games of your choice. This makes it oodles better than all the bundles that come with pre-selected games that always includes at least one game I'd never buy. If you were planning on buying at least 3 games and an extra controller along with your wii, then outside of the shipping it's a pretty good deal. Ditto. I have 2 Targets, 3 Gamestops, 1 WalMart and 1 ToysRUs between my office and my house (NE Atlanta Suburb). Every couple of weeks I would make a leisurely drive home and check out all the stores. No luck at all. Even tried at the Fry's and BestBuy from time to time as well. I have no doubt I could have been more obsessive about it and grabbed one sooner, but whatever.
That Walmart bundle finally became reasonable sometime last week and I placed my order. Hoping to get the shipment before this weekend. Knowing my luck I will have 3 games, an extra controller but no Wii until next week.
Meh. Of course all of their claims of server downtime are for real. I mean, they did publish it on their own website.
Regardless....hosting video...a lot of which will most likely be copyrighted and published without permission...is a little bit different than hosting "pointers" to "random" files (aka torrents), imo.
I don't think many people are seriously considering VMWare as a replacement for the traditional desktop. Virtualization is typically used to replace multiple physical servers with one larger server. Granted TFA is talking about Workstation, but in regards to replacing your desktop, check out VDI on ESX...

Pretty much, there are many ways to lose a teaching certificate, and not everyone is going to get one. This can be good as it not only protects children, but keep teacher pay high by filtering out the less serious practitioners.
What world do you live in where "teacher pay" can even be used in the same sentence as "high"? Frankly, that's the least-informed argument I've heard yet.
Not necessarily agreeing with his statement, but in the Atlanta area, most teachers starting salary is between $30-$35k a year. Not a bad gig considering you work roughly 9 months out of the year and get every major holiday off. They also have lots of incentives to get higher level degrees. I know several teachers in their late 20s, early 30s making close to $50k. Plus good benefits and a government retirement plan. Also, if they continue up the administration path it gets even better. Not too shabby if you ask me.
Anyone?
Similar vein of Civilization, but with a fantasy theme. I played it for months on end. No fancy editors and whatnot, but definitely a good game.
Try buying machines from Dell/HP/IBM's business divisions rather than the consumer PC's. They tend to be much leaner on the crapware. I saved nearly $600 by purchasing a Dell "home" laptop (Inspiron E1705) compared to the equivalent "business" model. I find much better coupon codes and discounts for their home versions than business. That savings allowed me to get more RAM and a better video card. Not a problem to blow away the crapware.:D
gamers who grew up and can't spend 4 hours a day gaming. These people do not have HDTV.
I would think those people are now "working professionals" and DO have HDTVs (like myself).
Well, they're working, but that doesn't mean they have the extra spending money for an HDTV. Anyways, if you don't have the time to spend in front of the TV (like the people I was referring to), why would you spend the money (even if you had it) getting an HDTV? Point taken. However, in my case at least (and probably a lot of/.ers), I don't have time to dedicate to 3-4 hour gaming sessions, but I DO have the time to watch a movie with my family, watch a game or just veg in front of the TV during the weekend. That alone is enough for me to want to have a nicer TV if I can afford it. Now that it appears 1080Ps are getting reasonable in price, I will soon be upgrading from the 36" CRT (480P/1080i) that I bought 5 years ago.
Anyway, I think I've lost the point of this, but I would think more "casual" gamers that used to be "heavy" gamers have HDTVs than the current generation of "heavy" gamers. I am simply basing this on the trend that as people get older, they get better jobs, have a family, etc, and tend to have more money but less time for gaming. It's a shame really...

I'm a big fan of the genre - Feist, Salvatore, Jordan, Weis/Hickman, Goodkind, Brooks are among my favorites.
ack....exactly which genre is that? cheesy mass market schlock?
Try reading some real fantasy. What what exactly constitutes "real fantasy?" George RR Martin, Robin Hobb, Stephen Donaldson? Or maybe JK Rowling and CS Lewis?
Please, do enlighten me.
Slashdot karma be damned, but IMHO LOTR almost completely failed to capture that Tolkienesque feel that I get from reading the books. Hah! You are absolutely correct. The movies were actually very engaging and entertaining (minus the last 30 minutes of RoTK). I couldn't stand the books and the way Tolkien writes - very William Faulkner-esque IMHO and very difficult to read. It is a fantastic story and incredible world that he created, but maybe it was written too "properly" for my taste. I'm a big fan of the genre - Feist, Salvatore, Jordan, Weis/Hickman, Goodkind, Brooks are among my favorites.
Anyway, I would still watch a "Hobbit" movie regardless of PJ's involvement. Heck, I really enjoyed the animated versions of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.
American champagne is champagne wherever it's grown. I don't think American champagne even has to contain alcohol. I planted my champagne crop a little late this year and the darn things sprouted alcohol free!;-)
what matters is how much profit each company makes.
i.e. if Sony's taking a loss on each overpriced console, they make no money. While Nintendo with last gen tech (Wii's a souped up gamecube) will probably make a large profit...
(speculation of course, I haven't looked at either company's revenue reports)..
Then there's the issue of who's more fun, and who will have a larger installbase... Again, PS3 didn't deliver many units so they probably wont be very profitable to themselves or publishers next year. Which hurts them in many areas... I also heard GTA will be on x360, so that's another reason not to need a PS3... I would prefer all three make money and stick around to create the next gen console in 3-5 years. Competition is a good thing. Not sure what the negative outcome would be for us gamers if the market was whittled down to 2 console makers again. Seems like everything else (well, not really everything else, but...) in the computer world only has 2 major players anymore - Microsoft/Apple, Nvidia/Ati, AMD/Intel. A legitimate 3rd party in any of those markets would most likely be very good for the consumer. We actually have it pretty good right now in the console world if things stay as is...
At the same time, console makers had been trying to turn their consoles into full computers in an attempt to make their systems more appealing. Sounds about like what console makers are trying to do these days...
I've discovered it's much easier to play games where it's possible to play just a few minutes at a time. I can't even start a game like Unreal, or Civilization, or Sim City, anymore. Sure you can pause them or, in the case of turn-based games, walk away for a short while, but when kids are involved, that "short while" invariably becomes a long while. By that time, you've completely forgotten what you were doing and the game is ruined. I agree. I've given up on MMORPGs completely, I haven't touched NWN2 in a couple weeks and even some RTSes are hard to come back to after a few days of not playing. I'm actually finding myself getting back into the console world again. Scary. For example, the New Super Mario Brothers for the DS is a perfect balance for me right now with a 6 month old. I can't wait until he's older and we can doing some gaming together...

Please define the "right" data center.

Only time will tell I suppose. And they thought the last lawsuit and raid were bad... I guess they can show the videos from their torrent site now. lol
"A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..." So we just witnessed Luke taking out the original Death Star??
