I wonder if the LED issues you are referring to are more typical to TVs as they have a much larger screen to light up/refresh/etc.

I also got a Sager laptop a couple months ago and the LED screen it came with is absolutely fabulous and the best screen I have ever owned. It puts my Sharp Aquos LCD TV (~4 years old) to shame.

Since you are the master of the Internet, please find me a quality LED monitor for a reasonable price (less than $250) at resolution that is higher than 1080P. Thanks for showing me a link to monitors of old technology that I have no interest in. But I'm probably at fault by not implicitly stating LED in my original post. /sadface

I cranked up a few movies with VLC and apparently the black bar/aspect ratio issue is determined by the movie publisher/distributor (?). If it makes you feel any better, there is either no black bar or much smaller black bars on my 16:9 monitor vs my 16:10 monitor. So for movie watching you are in good shape. Screen real estate for general computer use is another story.

If anything I'm annoyed by blurries at non-native resolution on most LCD rather than by the lack of resolution.

More windows or whatever on the screen of course. My laptop with a 15.6" screen is at 1080P and I have no issues reading text, etc. I wish I could get a better resolution on my 23 and 24" desktop monitors as well (at a reasonable price).

Yes, monitors do have much different use cases, but they have been royally screwed over by the TV 1080P standard. I recently purchased a 2nd monitor and could not find a match for my 3 year old 24" 1920x1200 display. I had to settle for a 23" 1080P. Very irritating to say the least. I guess the one good side effect is that monitors are dirt cheap these days.

The idea behind this article is that, people are willing to pay $50+ in game, IF THE GAME IS FREE TO DOWNLOAD AND USE

In other words, it is a micro-payment scheme. Give the main game away for free (like say Bloons, or Farmville), then charge people for add-ons.

The 95% of people that want the game but won't pay, get what they want. A playable game for free.

The 5% of people willing to pay for extra's, will pay a lot of money for them, far exceeding the small payments they could have gotten if they charged to download/continued use of the game.

I wonder if the Smurfs game was included in this study. It is my understanding that people spent hundreds of dollars on this game. They did not "willingly" spend that money however. Must have Smurfberries.

When I finally got a "real" job in late 96, I believe that is where I was able to use my first CD burner (2x) on a Slackware workstation (using xcdroast I think?). We found a local dealer that sold 10 packs of writeable discs for ~$20 if my memory is not failing me..

Not quite. The majority of people cannot tell the difference in sound between an mp3 and the original CD. Especially when listened to through ear buds or small speakers. However, the majority of people can notice the difference between HD and non-HD video. Whether they care about it is a different matter, but it is noticeable.

I fall into this camp. Hell, half the time I'm in the mood for some music I just hit up youtube (usually several variations of the same song) and the quality is just fine for my ears. When it comes to watching a movie on the big screen LCD, I absolutely can tell a difference between blu-ray and dvd/streaming. If it's a random chick flick or whatever my wife wants to watch, I don't mind the lower quality. If it's a "blockbuster" movie with some nice FX, I have to watch the blu-ray version with the surround sound cranked up to really enjoy it.

It's become a case of the Boy Who Cried Wolf to those of us who work in such industries. You have to start actually canceling and citing the price increase as the reason why if you want any of the suits to pay attention. Otherwise, you're just "normal subscriber churn" to them.

I terminated my subscription last night and filled out their post-cancellation questionnaire. There was no option to cite that their recent price hike was the specific reason I was canceling. There was also no comment box for me to fill out and state this as well. The closest option was "I need to cut costs," which is certainly not the case. I don't think they will get the message based on the available responses unfortunately.
