I'll sum up the double-blind test results above: LAME-encoded mp3's sound as good as AAC files and better than WMA files at the same bit rate. (The bit rates varied by insignificant amounts.)
You left out one bit: and ogg sounds better than all of them.
The people with the skills Google are looking for probably don't have the skills to get laid. Best earn the money Google is offering and then... um... go the professional route.
I think the point is that these Stanford guys measured the wind at a bunch of places across the midwest and then figured out how much power could be generated by the aggregation of these places. Then you can use the this data to decide a national policy and to provision the long-distance capacity to get this to where to consumers are - the example they give is California.
As for the the national power grid being used - I was under the impression that the US did not have a national power grid with enough capacity to move significant power around. Isn't that why there can be shortages in California while everyone else is fine?
He says it was Midi-chlorians because "Jedi, you see, aren't made, they're born. They're of the blood, nobility, maybe even a master race". So no point fantasising about training yourself to be one - as the author did during the first trilogy.
But I think if you had been paying attention in the first trilogy you might also have come to the conclusion that Jedi are born not made - or was is coincidence that two of the most powerful Jedi just happened to be FATHER and SON!?
Hmm, a fairer comparison would have been amazon.fr given that there are a zillion reasons why stuff is cheaper in the US than France. And amazon.fr seem to be charging EUR 22,09 - not that much cheaper.
Interesting - WD don't tell you the rotational speed! Must be the first drive
that doesn't. In the rotational speed row it just says "IntelliPower" and below
"A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance."
I guess I'd need to see some independent benchmarking before I would believe that performance is not hurt. Also is the power saving dependent on the drive not being used flat out?
Well, it seems they are not really trying - they are not even talking to Skype about it.
What they want is permission to install spyware - something that is illegal in Germany at the moment:
Ziercke said there was a vital need for German law enforcement agencies to have the ability to conduct on-line searches of computer hard drives of suspected terrorists using "Trojan horse" spyware.
That's the real point of the story, not that Skype is unbreakable.
"using less memory" isnt always desirable. I have 4 GB of RAM in my system and i'd rather if the applications USED THAT RAM, to keep application response "instant", rather than un-caching stuff, only to pull it back into memory again when I want to see it.
A good point! And firefox does seem to take this into account. I am running Firefox 2 on Ubuntu (right now!) on a Thinkpad T20 with 256MB of ram - it works fine.
Now this. It's no longer about distribution, it's about use. Not only that, but we aren't talking websites, we're talking any remote network access. 'Remote' is not defined in the license, so it's while localhost is probably excluded, I've no idea what the status of an intranet would be. What about the intranet of a multi-national?
IANAL, but it seems to me you only have to give the "users" the source. On an intranet all the users are in the company, so there is no need to release the source outside the company. From the license:
if you modify the Program, your modified version must prominently offer all users interacting with it remotely through a computer network (if your version supports such interaction) an opportunity to receive the Corresponding Source of your version
Bipolar?
I have heard CSS called many things, but never a godsend.
Heretic! Burn him! W3C is the holy trinity of W's - all of their specifications are godsends by definition.

Do I need to quit surfing for free porn in the .ru domain on my Win95 box with no firewall? (ok, that last part was actually bs).
The part about no firewall?
It means Janeway's going to have to pretend to be thrown all over the place while bits of the ship fall off.

(I am joking)
Once installed, you upload your files by right clicking on them and selecting "I'm feeling lucky".
I would like to thank editors for giving us all another chance at first post on this story. I missed it a few hours ago - wish me luck this time!
Might have surprised Mr Murdoch - he thought he owned all the papers.

OMG +1 Insightful, could someone meta-meta-moderate that moderation +5 Funny?
It's because British people are inherently sensible and would not start Armageddon without a jolly good reason. Unlike all you mad foreigners.
The MPAA got the same people to write this "tool" as they get to write those super-realistic computer scenes in the movies!

They know that the first result is pretty unlikely to be what you want, so you'll have to come back and do a real search anyway...

FASTSAT Affordable, Science and Technology SATellite (FASTSAT)
There, fixed it.
The previous record was 2 metres, already quite scary enough. Well, I hope they keep updating us on any slightly larger seafood they find.

Clearly, it is not possible to be a nerd and a father at the same time...
Quite possible: sperm bank + database hacking + a bit of stalking.
I'm not.
But they are living among us. And they have mod points.
