  1. I'm betting Sun will be the #1 Consumer on Toshiba To OEM Laptops With OpenSolaris · · Score: 2, Interesting

I bet Sun is 'paying' for this with a guarentee of a minimum customer base - expect to see Toshiba notebooks in the hallways at Sun facilities. Right now I see allot Macs running Solaris at Sun facilities and most Sun employees have XP installed on their non-Mac notebooks.

I like Solaris but there is essentially zero market demand for Solaris on notebooks.

  8. some good some bad on Movie Review, Hellboy II · · Score: 1

While I didn't think it was a bad movie, I was very disappointed. I like the original much more.

I liked the visuals and the fight scenes - all well done. I thought Del Torro hit it right around the segment with the Giant Forest God. I enjoyed the 'Angel' near the end.

However, the rest of the movie not so much. The German was grating. The Para organization seemed like a bad partial knock off of "Men in Black", and the Troll Market seemed like a bad knockoff of Harry Potter. The Elves seemed like a knockoff of Atlantis' bad guys (name escapes me). The word knockoff keeps coming up ...

Still I didn't dislike it . I was just disappointed.

I think Del Torro is setting up for future movies. I still look forward to them.

Just did, here is the Healthcare platform, emphasis mine. Seems consistent with what I wrote. If not point it out. Feel free to look at the ther platforms. I'll be happy to have a conversation with anyone on the subject. 1. Establish Medical Saving Accounts. Under this program, you could deposit tax-free money into a Medical Savings Account (MSA). Whenever you need the money to pay medical bills, you will be able to withdraw it. For individuals without an MSA, the Libertarian Party will work to make all healthcare expenditures 100 percent tax deductible. 2. Deregulate the healthcare industry. We should repeal all government policies that increase health costs and decrease the availability of medical services. For example, every state has laws that mandate coverage of specific disabilities and diseases. These laws reduce consumer choice and increase the cost of health insurance. By making insurance more expensive, mandated benefits increase the number of uninsured American workers. 3. Remove barriers to safe, affordable medicines. We should replace harmful government agencies like the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) with more agile, free-market alternatives. The mission of the FDA is to protect us from unsafe medicines. In fact, the FDA has driven up healthcare costs and deprived millions of Americans of much-needed treatments. For example, during a 10-year delay in approving Propanolol Propranolol (a heart medication for treating angina and hypertension), approximately 100,000 people died who could have been treated with this lifesaving drug. Bureaucratic roadblocks kill sick Americans.

"This is exactly the solution that your much vaunted free market has come up with" - The free market came up with insurance. Social services made it OK to not either have any or to not pay your own way.

Secondly, you are mis-characterizing the platform. The current system has lot's of legacy crap. Some from the free market, some from the government. While some LIBs do talk about wiping it clean overnight, like some DEMS talk about disarmament, the many rational people in the party know these problems need to solved within a LIB context not pushed under the rug. We don't talk about throwing grandma from the train, only changing the context in which a solution is available.

Your comments are typical, uneducated on the issues. You are flying blind and cyclically voting for Dumb and Dumber. Maybe, eventually Huxley's World Government will save you.

  13. Thank God for Evolution on Louisiana Passes Intelligent Design Law · · Score: 1

Sorry couldn't resist writing that ...

I have to say that while I fully believe in Evolution Theory I always thought that ID SHOULD BE TAUGHT. Why, because it is a contentious and current topic. Secondly, because it is the counter-point to Evolution. It's hard to make a proper case for Evolution without discussing in depth the alternative(s).

Moreover, isn't a fully rounded view what we are striving for? To be clear, we want to be able to say that we have discussed all the major points of view and that we have a sensible rationale for our beliefs or disbeliefs.

BIG NOTE: People who believe in ID aren't likely to be swayed by science. Their point of view is intrinsically non-rational (not rooted in logic); it is theological, psychological, or emotional. However, our kids should not be unprepared to duel with the ID proponents on their own ground. If they are, they may one day be swayed by them for less than rational reasons. AND, if we can't talk their language how are we going to sway them ;)

Lastly, I have a problem with not considering the other guy's point of view just because he/she is on the other side of the politial/theological/ fence. There is something wrong with that.

So, I have no problem with ID education. It all depends on how it's taught. If it's taught as theory or theology- then good. If the teacher stops every 10 minutes for a Hail Mary or "Go Jesus!"- then BAD!

Sigh. I'm not trying to be an asshole (it comes naturally) I can appreciate that :) Where I went wrong was not driving home that what we do is handle transactional loads. The data sets might be 50gb to a few TB. For us the big deals are, throughput (tx per sec) with transactions being turned around from i/o in thru processing; latency spread, the transactions have individual service level times; and redundancy, we have backup nodes. We do write to databases but only by writing to another cluster that buffers the data and spools it to the database or file system. What we found that was that Windows Server (not cluster server) had great throughput. It turns around transactions really quickly. My guess is that allot work went into the kernel to support SQL Server and Messaging. I see more trading systems going up on Windows now. However, we haven't been able to beat Solaris 10 for latency control and latency is something that drives traders crazy. 1ms additional latency causes $MM additional cost each year. There is an industry arms race going on with latency at the center. Of course if you are dealing with seismic or weather data, or water flow sims, full cycle kernel performance is not really the issue. FYI: Sun's senior sales people are compensated solely on hardware sales (exceptions kind of proving the rule). Cheers.
