Thanks for the info. Will give CCCP a shot. On my windows system, I have always used k-lite and no problem so far. I would like to know if there is anything 'wrong' with k-lite because I have been using it for long and recommend it to any poor soul who may want to get the videos working on his system.
Ah..You have to think in relative terms. Let me try to come up with a totally useless analogy:
Suppose you were a sea turtle who just hatched out of egg along with 10000 of your brothers and sisters on a remote island beach. Now you gotta rush to the sea through the packs of vultures and hundreds of other predators roaming on the beach. Now its a fact that only a couple of babies in a thousand reach the sea alive. You are pressing WASD and space-bar like crazy and you have senstivity set to 20+.
You are scared shitless but even then your uber skills at strafe jumping have gotten you almost halfway there. Just when you feel the first splash of water on your face, a huge eagle grabs one of legs and starts chewing it. You are dangling in the air and you are sure you will die right then and there. Just then the eagle breaks off a part of your leg completely and starts to gulp it down, and in the process you drop down.
Your 'A' key is not working anymore. But being the uber 1337 you are, you smash your optical mouse and start the bunny hopping towards the sea. The eagle realizes what you are up to and chases after you but you are Camping Gaz personified, and refuse to be hampered by one shitty little key. The eagle makes a low dive to grab you but you make one final jump and press the space-bar till it breaks, finally landing in the sea and swim away from the shore as fast as possible.
Your missing leg severely limits your swimming prowess and it takes a long time to heal completely. But then you come to know that all the other babies were eaten by the predators roaming on that island. You look at your missing leg and say "Heh, big fuckin' deal".
But I agree, original Half Life scared the hell out of me since it was the first fps where I invested so much time playing at night (summer vacation). There were bits where I was scared to play further because something nasty was lurking right around the corner. Good times.

Totally agree. Third person by definition puts you in a position of 'observer' which kind of destroys the illusion a bit. (Although I must admit I have not player Fatal Frame so that one may be an exception)
I really should get a new system and catch up on the gaming backlog:)
Billy has to be the simplest no-crap mp3 player out there. Its very light and takes up very little memory even if you like to play 500+ mp3s in your playlist. I have been using it for about 3 years and can't even imagine going back to anything else (including winamp 2.98 which was the best version IMHO) No fancy shit. Total keyboard control.
Download it Here They have some other nifty goodies which you may want to check out too.
BSPlayer is another good choice if you love keyboard controls as much as I do. There are customizable keyboard shortcuts for almost everything. VLC is awesome in the sense that it plays almost anything you throw at it but BSPlayer has subtitles support which is not there in VLC (Atleast I have not been able to find it). There is also a built-in subtitles editor which makes it a slightly better choice for me, plus I guess its just force of habit that I play most of the media files in BSPlayer and use VLC for dual audio track ogm files and some other which refuse to play in BSPlayer for some reason.
I think you have hit the nail on the proverbial head. Most of the 'hardcore' windows users are somewhere between the power users and experts. You know, the guys who people run to when they can not get something to work, or can not get their system to boot properly, or have some major problem with the windows' regular working. When they try to switch to Linux, they are totally clueless. I know that someone who is already enough tech savvy can find his way around Linux given enough time and effort, but for most of the converts its a big turn-off since no one really enjoys the transition from some sort of elite status to a complete n00b.
I myself have very limited exposure to Linux, and that is also only because my college actively promoted linux (Redhat,Mandrake,Solaris & Suse). I used to have a dual boot system in college but once when a new install of xp screwed up lilo, I just did not bother to fix it on my pc. Most of the work I needed could be done on the windows partition (gaming too) and for the rest, we had the lab open 24/7. Its a very silly point to make, but when I think of it, if Linux could support gaming as good as windows does, I am sure I would have switched totally to Linux in the first few years of college.
yeah sneaky bastards. I always hated them white micesss. Wait, so we do lab testing on white mice and they are doing some sort of complex galactical experiments on us.. so.. its like..the observer becomes the subject..becomes the observer..becomes... *head explodes*
maybe because kittens and puppies ARE sneaky creatures planning to take over the world, and only slashdot moderators know about this global conspiracy ?! Considering what fud of a topic this is, we should put/. editors and moderators in a tinfoil hut on a remote island, and nuke them from orbit just to be sure.
You know, although your analysis is interesting, cherry picking facts and causation have next to nothing in common. You decided to pick the climate of some places. How about their history ? How about their place in the imperialist culture in the last few centuries ? How about we point to countries in the middle east or Afghanistan where the climate is moderate in most parts but still have some of the worst government structures. Oh yes, they mostly follow Islam, which is not the case with Spain, Greece or Portugal. But thats the whole point isn't it. There are so many factors at work that simply picking one particular trait, which just happened to be most visible, is not going to explain the occurrence of something as complex as frequency of dictatorship or poorly implemented democratic governments in some particular places.(We can go to the Cambodian region if Islam's presence in a region makes objective argument difficult for some reason)
Good point. I am not sure where I stand on the feasibility of using computers for face recongnition but I am certain that after sufficient progress has been made in this field, computers will be no worse than humans.
We seem to have this defensive attitude that Humans are by default superior to anything we ourselves create which, though a very appealing concept, may not necessarily be true in every case. Most of the people applauded when Kasporov defeated Deep Blue and cited logical reasoning et al as the reason why computer can never reach the mental level of a human. Then when Deep Blue won, they cited the mathematical model of chess and huge memory at computer's disposal as the reason. I personally think that most(if not all) of the points being raised against computer's ability to perform this task will be answered once we get a better understanding of how many and which specific factors actually matter when it comes to face recognition, atleast for human level.
Someone made a good point about that feeling of almost recognising someone. I think we are still far from understanding the process well enough to convert it into an algorithm and feed it to a computer system. But that does not mean it will always be the case.
I am not sure if they are related or not (or even if they are bugs) but I have faced them with the old versions and just came across them on 2.0 as well. A lot of the times when a site has not finished loading completely, ctrl+clicking kind of hangs the browser for a few secs and then opens the page in the same page instead of opening it in a new tab. I always end up right clicking and going to the 'Open Link in new Tab' option in that case which does not seem to have the same problem.
The second problem is specific to the new Slashdot Discussion System. When the page has not finished loading completely, clicking on a reply opens a blank page with just one word "false" (must be some return value) instead of expanding that reply.
Anyone else faced these problems? Other than them, I am loving 2.0 (just waiting for the Black Japan theme to get updated but the default one is pretty decent for a change). 2.0 seems snappier to me. Really hated the default tabs settings but, after messing around with the config a bit like most of the people, it is almost back to 1.5 behaviour so all is well except that hideous drop-down button on the right. Is there a way to remove it somehow?
Ah.. knitting! Now thats something I agree with partially, but not completely. I can really use something like it with the cold weather creeping in, but can't hold two knitting sticks together for the life of me.
Thanks for putting in the second part because if you have been careless enough to just say I partially agree, everyone would have automatically assumed that you completely agree.
As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.

As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.
So, thats a valuable lesson we have learned today children. Just by using 'bold' tags at different parts of the same fucking line, we can switch from a whining apple fanboy to a whining windows fanboy. Awesome!
I really hope you are just trolling. If not, I probably should get started with my own diary before I forget what it was like in the times I grew up, and I am not even old enough to think about good ol' days.
This must be the only place on God's Earth where people post weird acronyms AND their full form along with it. I mean whats the bloody point? The whole purpose of acronyms is to save writing/typing space and time. Now I am sure some good soul started this trend when he was analyzing his post content in real time and posted the non-abbreviated form just in case someone does not 'get it'. But then people wanted to be like him because he must have been like a Geek God or something so everyone jumped on the bandwagon and started explaining their acronyms because everyone knows that this way you waste much less time than typing only the acronyms or..you know.. normal text.

Can someone with better knowledge about how military works tell me if the cost and safety concerns of a human translator may be the driving force behind opting for a crazy idea like this? I mean they will have to have a decent translator with every unit roaming the critical areas or atleast in places where they are prone to come in contact with the local population and may need to interact with them (which almost covers the whole of Iraq given the current situation).
An automated translating system may totally screw things up but its expendable and in the worst possible case they will have to shoot some more bullets towards civilians because of a bad translation - which is not much different from the current situation and is something which may appeal to the 'shoot first and think later' policy which armed forces around the world have when they are in combat. Oh and it won't earn them new friends for sure except if the translator comes up with a Monty Python type translation, although I don't think anything seems funny when the person standing in front is holding a gun to your head.
Pope: "We have decided to ban certain type of statues inside Vatican City depicting erotic postures. Come here Father Bryan and Sister Camilla, and take of your clothes please. Ok this is pose 1..Bryan put your hand there.. this is pose 2... oh and..(takes off his clothes).. eh..yeah that seems right.. this is pose 3.
A million slashdot editors gasp in shock and then erect similar statues all over the city to inform everyone what kind of statues are not allowed.
The admins at my college started a Nightmare edtition of bandwidth throttling technique you mentioned . When I first started with my undergrad program there was no censorship or bandwidth restrictions whatsoever(the systems at labs didn't even ask for authentications). Ofcourse the major traffic was going to porn sites so the admins came up with an authentication system to deter the students from 'misusing' the facilities. That didn't work ofcourse as almost everyone inevitably found out ways to surf annonymously although it did reduce the porn traffic because most of the people who surfed porn religiously were not the type to put in even that much effort.
After about 2 years the restrictions started coming. Porn sites were being blocked, webproxy sites recursively blocked, mp3, mpg, mpeg, avi, asf, wmv, mov extensions were blocked (they either did not know about.vob and.ogg or they just did not care!) But then we found out that you can download all of these files by just adding ?c=1 and similar tags at the end of URLs but people who knew about 'tricks' started keeping them away from the 'masses' so that the rampant use won't kill this too. The p2p ports were blocked and the CONNECT support was withdrawn too. Ofcourse there were ways to bypass most of them by using socks and tunnelling but most of the students were not aware of it back then (which is surprising when I think about it now).
Coming back to the bandwidth limitation issue, every student was given a max limit of 350 MBs per month! which effectively killed legit downloading for god-fearing students. But then professors had unlimited bandwidths and John.the.Ripper was our friend. Exceptions were made for special cases but it continued for a long time before they extended it to 1GB (which was still horrible but atleast let you surf the net and occasionally download important files legitimately).
But contrary to the normal perception, a lot of professors (specially the ones who have been teaching there for a long time) were vehemently opposed to putting any restrictions on the net usage. I remember one senate meeting in which one stupid ass professor proposed denying web access to students in their rooms so that the only way they can surf is via the systems in the labs. The head of the CS department (also one of the most respected and loved teachers in the institute) stood up and said "So you have finally lost your mind. I will quit the day something as stupid as this was made a institute policy". Ofcourse that never happened.
So yeah some form of censorship happens in a lot of colleges (if not all of them) but not all of them are the same type. The restrictions at my college were mainly due to bandwidth concerns and political sites or controversial topics (except outright porn sites) were never banned. Although some nut cases who joined later did try to sneak in their own personal agendas but as far as I know they never succeeded.
I agree. Its one thing to do something because you feel like it. Its totally another when you are supposed to be doing it. The simplest example would be students really finding the subject matter from different streams very interesting. I remember I loved going through my friends' mechanical engg notes, AI related stuff and even my brother's History notes, and found all of them much more interesting than most of what I was studying. It was almost always the opposite case with my friends. I think it has something to do with the freedom you feel when working on something because you decided to work on it. It gives you a challenge and a feeling of accomplishment unmatched by anything you can get at routine work.
I am currently learning the most basic things about game development at my current job. Now I have designed simple puzzles sort of things in college days just for fun but I don't find working on anything like that very interesting now if the boss asks me to, whereas I enjoy working on the same damn thing once I am not required to work on it, and end up spending hours making them as perfect as possible. Gaah! Can't wait to get my skills up to a decent level and try working on my own or freelancing.
This topic is almost done to death already but oh well. Just forget about how the MPAA or whatever the fuck company is coming up with shitty new ideas about copyright is trying to do to the consumers, forget about how easy it is to bypass this new protection thingy and the rest, Can someone please explain to me one thing:
The purpose of the new scheme is to disable playing dvds on computers (which supposedly will make it harder for people to make copies of the dvds). Now most of the players can directly play vob files without needing any third-party plugins or anything like that (I almost always watch movies by playing the vob files directly on my PC) WHAT exactly does this new thing accomplish ? I mean its not even stopping casual users from watching movies on PC which is all it is trying to do. I just don't get it. They are breaking away from Standard Formats for doing something which is not working in the end for even an average joe? Even the person least interested in bypassing the protection per se can watch the movie (and skip the commercials while he is at it). Am I missing something vital here?
